‘Hope’ You Can Xerox

Although we’ve been quite supportive of the creative community’s embracing of presidential hopeful Barack Obama, recently highlighting the works of the Date Farmers and The Mac, we just can’t co-sign Shepard Fairey’s copy and paste contributions to the cause. As if the poster and subsequent billboards weren’t bad enough, ‘Hope’ and ‘Progress’ are now being emblazoned on t-shirts too. They’re selling for $25 a pop and will be retailed through Obama merchandise mart Upper Playground. Besides the fact that he tends to bite, Shepard often doesn’t even know why and that’s as troublesome as unregistered Obama supporters who can’t name one good reason why they’d back the young senator besides his charm. While some of you might think we’re being a tad too harsh, let’s just say that when a gossipy website like Gawker can pull of a Shep even better than the man himself, you know the creative underclass is raging, and not by making t-shirts.
