Well, as any fan of Def Jam’s amazing musical catalog can attest, last night’s event left a lot to be desired. Even Russell Simmons is rumored to be pissed about the half-assed production. But regardless of how dissapointing it was, it probably wasn’t the most embarassing moment in the label’s history. Take a look back at 10 moments that Def Jam probably wishes they could forget…

EMBARRASSMENT: 3rd Bass Disses Lyor Cohen On Debut Album
WHEN: 1989
WHAT: As the story goes, when 3rd Bass was signed to Def Jam, label head Lyor Cohen had little to no faith in MC Serch’s group finding success. So they did all that they could do and took their beef and frustrations to wax with a bunch of veiled disses including one on their hit “The Gas Face”: “Elroy Cohen gets the gas face.”

EMBARRASSMENT: Signing The Flatlinerz
WHEN: 1993
WHAT: Nepotism at it’s worst. Uncle Russell claims he didn’t sign his nephew’s group to the label and that it was in fact Jam Master Jay that signed Jamal “Redrum” Simmons’ horrorcore group after he was convinced that a darker, more sinister form of rap was the future. Either way, it came out on Def Jam and it flopped.

EMBARRASSMENT: BO$$ Not Actually Born Gangster.
WHEN: 1994
WHAT: After her debut album hit #1 on the Hip Hop charts, we all thought the Detroit reared MC was going to carve out her own lane in the game. Well, we did until she foolishly blabbed to the Wall Street Journal that she actually wasn’t gangster at all, grew up in a middle class family and went to private school. Pretty… pretty… pretty dumb.

EMBARRASSMENT: Beastie Boys Put Russel Simmons On Blast
WHEN: 1994
WHAT: We all knew Russel Simmons was skimming off the top (every great businessman does) but we didn’t really know until NYC’s favorite white boy’s put big homie on blast with a line off Ill Communication: “Got fat bass lines like Russell Simmons steals money.”

EMBARRASSMENT: Keith Murray Allegedly Attacks Def Jam Employees
WHEN: 2003
WHAT: When Keith Murray signed to Def Jam after serving 33 months he thought it’d be smooth sailing. So we can kinda see why he flipped out when his album He’s Keith Murray was shelved for two years. We’re not saying he should have choked or even threatened to choke out DJ employees, but we understand.

EMBARRASSMENT: Irv Gotti & Ja Rule Arrested For Money Laundering
WHEN: 2003
WHAT: It was the hip hop Pinocchio story: Ever since they broke into the rap industry Irv and Ja wanted nothing more than to be real G’s. They got their chance in 2003 when the Feds came knocking with charges of them laundering money for a supposed drug ring. It didn’t help that Murder Inc’s marquee artist was having his career dismantled by 50 Cent. You know what they say: when it rains, it pours.

EMBARRASSMENT: Dame Dash Yells At Def Jam Employees On Camera
WHEN: 2003
WHAT: After learning that Def Jam brass held a meeting regarding Jay-Z’s “Black Album” without Roc-A-Fella’s CEO, Dame Dash bursts into one of their meetings and let’s ‘em know how he really feels. You thought Dame blacking on Kevin Liles was emasculating, imagine how DJ employee Randy Ackerman felt when Dame took aim and aired out his dirty laundry. Now the whole building knows he gets slapped around by rappers not named Dame Dash.

EMBARRASSMENT: The Entire Roc La Familia Roster
WHEN: 2005
WHAT: During his tenure as President of Def Jam, Jay-Z made some extremely questionable business moves, none of them more flagrantly bad as the formation of his Latino off-shoot label. The idea itself wasn’t horrible; the signee’s were. The worst being the Houston, Texas bred rapper, Aztek Escobar.

EMBARRASSMENT: Nas “Untitled” Album Name Fiasco.
WHEN: 2007
WHAT: Nas first took an L by signing to Def Jam under the Jigga’s presidency, he then took another one when he boasted about recording this revolutionary and militant album that was to be named “Nigger”. After promoting the album at award show’s with t-shirts bearing the album name and L.A. Reid saying the label fully supported him, Nas was forced to change the title right before it’s release. To add insult to injury the album partly produced by Dead Prez was neither revolutionary nor gangster.

EMBARRASSMENT: Rick Ross Outed As A Former Correctional Officer
WHEN: 2008
WHAT: The website Smoking Gun got their hands on some documents and photos showing that Platinum Def jam artist Rick Ross once worked as a correctional officer in Florida, making him the most ridiculed rapper of the year. Well, the second most, right behind Yung Berg.

Word to Eli Porter’s rap battle and horrifically amateur home jams, there are things in this world that we can’t help but laugh at, even while realizing that laughing at them just adds frequent flier miles onto our ticket to hell. And thanks to an ill-fated on-stage slip this past week, Rick Ross has given us a new one: “fat dudes falling over.” Trilla!

THE LIE: Arguably the first female gangster rapper, Bo$$ talked nonstop about slangin’ in Compton, being a certifiable G-ass killa who was also paradoxically dead broke, and assorted other street tales that were so familiar to the early-’90s West Coast movement. Then came the Wall Street Journal reporter who in 1994 published a story exposing Lichelle Laws’ middle-class upbringing in Detroit–including two deacon parents who constantly sent money to her in L.A.
THE VERDICT: Guilty of affected gangsterism in the first degree! But at the time, she was the biggest Bo$$ that we’d heard thus far.

THE LIE: The singer’s entire backstory, as he repeatedly discussed in interviews, revolved around leading a car-theft ring and serving more than four years in prison, including a three-year bid in Georgia. Of course, after The Smoking Gun started looking into things, they planted their gumshoe square in his ass. The reality? That Akon had landed in jail once, for a single stolen car, and served a matter of months before charges were dropped.
THE VERDICT: Might want to rename that record label, potna. In the meantime, can we borrow one of your wives?

STEVE AUSTIN THE BIONIQ MC
THE LIE: The Dallas-area rapper, who hit the charts with 2007’s “Bussa Move,” claimed in his press release that he’d been in the Marines for four years. After the Marine Corp Times looked into it, they found no record of big homie serving in any military branch.
THE VERDICT: Why would a rapper bother to lie about being a Marine? Guilty, but laaaaaaaaaame!

THE LIE: After the infamous 2001 shootout between her crew and Capone’s outside the Hot 97 studios in NYC, the Queen Bee repeatedly told authorities that her manager D-Roc wasn’t involved (and that she didn’t even know her bodyguard C-Gutta).
THE VERDICT: Guilty of federal perjury! Off to the bing went Kimberly Jones for a year and a day. This is the thanks she gets for being loyal to her crew? It’s enough to make someone want to…dance!

ROXANNE SHANTÉ
THE LIE: The first lady of the Juice Crew claimed that she had made Warner Music pay her way through college and graduate school on her way to getting a Ph.D. Problem was, as Slate has just uncovered, that a) she wasn’t signed to Warner Music (they just distributed her Cold Chillin’ records), b) she only attended her undergraduate college for three months, and c) that despite the claims, she doesn’t possess any college degree, undergraduate, Ph. D., or otherwise.
THE VERDICT: Looks like UTFO’s homegirl The Real Roxanne was actually the real Roxanne. We’ll lay off, though; she’s an icon, and any education is better than no education at all. Hear that, you bum-ass rappers who like to brag about not reading?

Complex: So Blood In The Sand is a third person shooter with a bunch of ammunition. What's your favorite gun to use in the game?

50 Cent: I like the 9mm action on it, the action pistol, the handgun. It's not as dramatic, like, you got a rocket launcher and a big machine gun, but I like to use the handgun.

Complex: Gaming reviews were really impressed by the helicopter aspects of the game, did you get to test that at all?

50 Cent: Yup, and that actually came from me liking Outrun as a game. There's that point where you're actually flying and running, because of the environment it came out the way it did. I threw out the idea and allowed the guys that actually do that to do it, to make the game come out as cool as possible and it came out amazing. Better than my initial idea, but of course I'm going to take credit for it.

Complex: There's a part of the game where you recruit girls at a strip club and send them to distract enemies. That sounds a little bit like Pimpin' Curly to us…

50 Cent: [Laughs] Yeah, that was early, that was two years ago. That concept has been around for ages, sending women to distract men. They make for a great distraction, especially attractive women, right?

Complex: Who would you say is the best shooter in the game besides you? Banks, Yayo, or Whoo Kid?

50 Cent: Well, I think they're fairly good, but I like to play as myself. Yayo doesn't play with me, he takes me off and puts him as the actual character. It's cool, when you're the actual character in it, it kind of makes you have a superhero’s vibe, it's like being in an action film where you're Hancock.

Complex: What’s the biggest difference between the first video game and this one?

50 Cent: There's a huge difference. There's a whole different studio creating it. Initially we started the concept with Vivendi'that's who we did Bulletproof with'and then their merger with Activision changed things around, so we went with THQ. I mean the whole process, it's totally different, the experience, the new music. Of course they have the hit music from Get Rich or Die Tryin', The Massacre and the Curtis album and as a person reaches a certain level of the game, they can unlock the actual music. Even if they're not a 50 Cent fan, they have an option to utilize a score produced by Swizz Beatz.

Complex: Not a lot of other rappers have video games but, Kanye said in article recently that when he was growing up, he dreamed of making a video game that features a giant penis chasing around vaginas. Do you think that makes for a good game?

50 Cent: I don't see how you make that one. Maybe you do a metaphor for those things. You'd have to change it around so it's not so aggressive. I don't see who's going to buy that. That might be like a game you could sell on a cell phone. Like a small game where they don't have to spend a lot of money marketing it.

Complex: If Rick Ross were a character in the game, what method would you use to take him out?

50 Cent: I don't know, because, I don't know where the police fit into the actual scenario in this one. If had to use a weapon against him in the game, it'd probably a rocket launcher, just to make sure that he's completely gone.

Today’s Smoking Gun expose seemed to put the nail in the coffin for Rick Ross’s ducktales that he was a) never a correctional officer and b) the victim of a cruel Photoshop prank by intarwebs hax0rs.
