Trying to forget the Hip-Hop Honors? The iconic rap label probably wishes you'd forget these 10 other embarrassments too.

If you haven’t noticed, 2009 is a pretty big year for Def Jam Recordings. And it’s not because they’re home to some of the biggest names in pop music (Rihanna, Kanye West, The Dream). The iconic label that put rap on the mainstream map turns 25 this year, an anniversary that’s being commemorated by a special CD box set and last night’s VH1 Hip-Hop Honors tribute.

Well, as any fan of Def Jam’s amazing musical catalog can attest, last night’s event left a lot to be desired. Even Russell Simmons is rumored to be pissed about the half-assed production. But regardless of how dissapointing it was, it probably wasn’t the most embarassing moment in the label’s history. Take a look back at 10 moments that Def Jam probably wishes they could forget…

EMBARRASSMENT: 3rd Bass Disses Lyor Cohen On Debut Album
WHEN: 1989
WHAT: As the story goes, when 3rd Bass was signed to Def Jam, label head Lyor Cohen had little to no faith in MC Serch’s group finding success. So they did all that they could do and took their beef and frustrations to wax with a bunch of veiled disses including one on their hit “The Gas Face”: “Elroy Cohen gets the gas face.”

EMBARRASSMENT: Signing The Flatlinerz
WHEN: 1993
WHAT: Nepotism at it’s worst. Uncle Russell claims he didn’t sign his nephew’s group to the label and that it was in fact Jam Master Jay that signed Jamal “Redrum” Simmons’ horrorcore group after he was convinced that a darker, more sinister form of rap was the future. Either way, it came out on Def Jam and it flopped.

EMBARRASSMENT: BO$$ Not Actually Born Gangster.
WHEN: 1994
WHAT: After her debut album hit #1 on the Hip Hop charts, we all thought the Detroit reared MC was going to carve out her own lane in the game. Well, we did until she foolishly blabbed to the Wall Street Journal that she actually wasn’t gangster at all, grew up in a middle class family and went to private school. Pretty… pretty… pretty dumb.

EMBARRASSMENT: Beastie Boys Put Russel Simmons On Blast
WHEN: 1994
WHAT: We all knew Russel Simmons was skimming off the top (every great businessman does) but we didn’t really know until NYC’s favorite white boy’s put big homie on blast with a line off Ill Communication: “Got fat bass lines like Russell Simmons steals money.”
WHEN: 2003
WHAT: When Keith Murray signed to Def Jam after serving 33 months he thought it’d be smooth sailing. So we can kinda see why he flipped out when his album He’s Keith Murray was shelved for two years. We’re not saying he should have choked or even threatened to choke out DJ employees, but we understand.

WHAT: It was the hip hop Pinocchio story: Ever since they broke into the rap industry Irv and Ja wanted nothing more than to be real G’s. They got their chance in 2003 when the Feds came knocking with charges of them laundering money for a supposed drug ring. It didn’t help that Murder Inc’s marquee artist was having his career dismantled by 50 Cent. You know what they say: when it rains, it pours.

EMBARRASSMENT: The Entire Roc La Familia Roster
WHEN: 2005
WHAT: During his tenure as President of Def Jam, Jay-Z made some extremely questionable business moves, none of them more flagrantly bad as the formation of his Latino off-shoot label. The idea itself wasn’t horrible; the signee’s were. The worst being the Houston, Texas bred rapper, Aztek Escobar.

WHEN: 2007
WHAT: Nas first took an L by signing to Def Jam under the Jigga’s presidency, he then took another one when he boasted about recording this revolutionary and militant album that was to be named “Nigger”. After promoting the album at award show’s with t-shirts bearing the album name and L.A. Reid saying the label fully supported him, Nas was forced to change the title right before it’s release. To add insult to injury the album partly produced by Dead Prez was neither revolutionary nor gangster.

And thanks to an ill-fated on-stage slip this past week, Rick Ross has given us a new one: “fat dudes falling over.” Trilla!

In honor of the BAWSE, we’ve compiled some of the funniest examples of our new favorite guilty humor pleasure, so read on to see Officer Ricky and other endomorphs waging a fruitless war against gravity. Enjoy!

Each day Complex scours the music blogs for 5 fresh songs that you should listen to in our 5 O’Clock Shuffle post.
We have a pretty interesting Shuffle line-up for you guys today. New school Southern rap mixed with some of the most underground stuff we’ve listened to in a while. Hip-hop’s resident correctional officer dissing one of boxing’s biggest stars. Hell, we even have a DJ mixing up hits from Kanye West, Taylor Swift, and Beyonce in light of Sunday’s small incident. Stop waiting and starting listening after the jump…

ARTIST: Pill
• Pill is making a lot of noise out of Atlanta right now, and with songs like this, it’s easy to see why. Be sure to check out the video at the download link. His controversial first video is hot too.

• Thought we’d put this one up just to let everyone know what type of fuckery Rick Ross is involved in these days. Which happens to be dissing Floyd Mayweather with his goons. Come on, Officer Ricky.

Roxanne Shanté isn't the only rapper to stretch the truth every now and then. Who else has taken poetic license a bit too far?

You’ve heard the news by now: Slate has found that rapper Roxanne Shante was not nearly the business-savvy teen that she bragged about being–and that rather than holding her label accountable for her college costs as she went on to get her doctorate degree, she actually didn’t ever get a degree at all, let alone make her label pay for it.

But more on that later! Hip-hop (and R&B) is as full of self-mythologizing bluster as the next genre (you ain’t no killa, Kenny Chesney!), but sometimes we’re amazed at what people try to get away with..which is why we rounded up the biggest fibbers in the biznass. Dear bad liars: try to stay away from polygraphs in the future…

Bo$$
THE LIE: Arguably the first female gangster rapper, Bo$$ talked nonstop about slangin’ in Compton, being a certifiable G-ass killa who was also paradoxically dead broke, and assorted other street tales that were so familiar to the early-’90s West Coast movement. Then came the Wall Street Journal reporter who in 1994 published a story exposing Lichelle Laws’ middle-class upbringing in Detroit–including two deacon parents who constantly sent money to her in L.A.
THE VERDICT: Guilty of affected gangsterism in the first degree! But at the time, she was the biggest Bo$$ that we’d heard thus far.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

AKON
THE LIE: The singer’s entire backstory, as he repeatedly discussed in interviews, revolved around leading a car-theft ring and serving more than four years in prison, including a three-year bid in Georgia. Of course, after The Smoking Gun started looking into things, they planted their gumshoe square in his ass. The reality? That Akon had landed in jail once, for a single stolen car, and served a matter of months before charges were dropped.
THE VERDICT: Might want to rename that record label, potna. In the meantime, can we borrow one of your wives?

————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

STEVE AUSTIN THE BIONIQ MC
THE LIE: The Dallas-area rapper, who hit the charts with 2007’s “Bussa Move,” claimed in his press release that he’d been in the Marines for four years. After the Marine Corp Times looked into it, they found no record of big homie serving in any military branch.
THE VERDICT: Why would a rapper bother to lie about being a Marine? Guilty, but laaaaaaaaaame!

————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

LIL KIM
THE LIE: After the infamous 2001 shootout between her crew and Capone’s outside the Hot 97 studios in NYC, the Queen Bee repeatedly told authorities that her manager D-Roc wasn’t involved (and that she didn’t even know her bodyguard C-Gutta).
THE VERDICT: Guilty of federal perjury! Off to the bing went Kimberly Jones for a year and a day. This is the thanks she gets for being loyal to her crew? It’s enough to make someone want to…dance!

ROXANNE SHANTÉ
THE LIE: The first lady of the Juice Crew claimed that she had made Warner Music pay her way through college and graduate school on her way to getting a Ph.D. Problem was, as Slate has just uncovered, that a) she wasn’t signed to Warner Music (they just distributed her Cold Chillin’ records), b) she only attended her undergraduate college for three months, and c) that despite the claims, she doesn’t possess any college degree, undergraduate, Ph. D., or otherwise.
THE VERDICT: Looks like UTFO’s homegirl The Real Roxanne was actually the real Roxanne. We’ll lay off, though; she’s an icon, and any education is better than no education at all. Hear that, you bum-ass rappers who like to brag about not reading?

RICK ROSS
THE LIE: Where to begin…Okay, maybe that he was a coke kingpin, that he knew Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega, and that he had never been a corrections officer–despite irrefutable evidence. BAWSE!
THE VERDICT: Guilty! Now for your sentence: having your label buy tens of thousands of copies of all your albums in order to inflate your first-week sales. *Sad trombone sound*

There have been many Rick Ross impersonators over the last year, but we’ve got to give it up to Miami’s WickLow Entertainment for taking it to the next level with the latest in their series of parodies starring Officer Ricky impersonator Alain “Plus” Pierre-Louis.
With brands looking to cash in on the epidemic that's sweeping the nation, we imagined what their masks might look like.

Pandemics aren’t usually good for anyone, but there are a few groups turning a bad day into a profitable one with nicely designed versions of dust masks to keep the disease at bay. Why wear a crappy painter’s mask when you can rock a Gucci gas mask, right?

If this disease spreads the way we think it will, the amount of money to be made in protective masks is in the billions. Dear Diamond Supply Company, Rogue Status, Nike Sportswear, Mighty Healthy, L-R-G, and Dee + Rickey: get on this, and cash in before this whole mask trend dies out! We’ve mocked up some ideas for you, modeled by our favorite pig, Officer Ricky Ross. Read on to see the six companies who should cash in on the Swine Flu hype as soon as possible…

NIKE SPORTSWEAR

• After debuting its Flywire Windrunner jacket at the Beijing Olympics, Nike taught the world that one could have an incredibly lightweight, but still strong, piece of outerwear. When it comes to a Swine Flu mask, you’re looking for the same attributes: something that weighs nothing but that will still keep you covered up and never rip. Waterproof/breathable? Oh yes. C’mon Swoosh. Get in there!

DIAMOND SUPPLY CO.
• Yo, our homie Nick. Shhh. Click this link. You can buy a 300 count box of these puppies, wrap each one up individually and tell the kids that they’re Tiffany-colored. Money in the bank.

DEE + RICKEY
• Everyone knows paper masks don’t do anything when it comes to actually protecting yourself from disease, so what better way to openly mock the third world than with a designer mask that couldn’t possibly work! Legos: $2. Lego Sars/Swine flu mask: $130. Do the math my dudes, you got this.

MIGHTY HEALTHY
• The recession is a tough time, and everyone is feeling it. What better way to re-brand and gain a new set of consumers than to get on the back of the hottest disease sweeping the country! “Stay Mighty Healthy, and avoid Swine Flu!” Gold.

L-R-G
• Sure, everyone is doing Swine Flu masks. But is anyone doing a full-face Swine Flu mask? What about you guys! L-R-G x Deer Park Elementary School. We see you.

ROGUE STATUS
• You guys have used the gun print on everything, from boxers to snowboard jackets, to T-shirts. You’ve got to have some excess material kicking around. Turn your scraps into gold!

We’re not one to stir things up (okay, sometimes we are), but we just noticed something interesting. In the “Mission Statement” video by Taz Arnold that we debuted yesterday, there is a news-style ticker going across the bottom of the screen. The ticker flashes a million different messages, but one in particular caught our eye:

RICK ROSS THE FALSE RUNS UP A $13,000 ORDER WITH TI$A NEVER PAYS THE INVOICE THEN BOOTLEGS THE BLUE TI$A MCM RIDERS JACKET INSTEAD WHAT A LOSER!

Hmmm…Did Officer Rawse really tell Taz (aka TI$A, who designs for and works with MCM) that he wanted a pricey MCM jacket, only to get a fake one made instead? He’s definitely rocking what appears to be the blue MCM jacket in his recent 50 Cent diss video “Kiss My Pinky Ring Curly“.
In this Q&A, Curtis breaks down his new video game and shows us some more revealing photos from his latest foe's past.

With his new video game Blood On The Sand dropping this week, we stopped by the G-Unit Records office to talk to 50 Cent about the release. But what we got was a bit more. In addition to speaking on the third-person shooter, 50 spoke (of course) about his tiff with Rick Ross, Lil Wayne's lack of response, and how he felt about Kanye's genital-heavy video game concept.

Oh, and later in the interview, you'll read about how 50 pulled out a stack of about 75 old photos of Rick Ross from his childhood and teenage years. Trust us, you ain't seen nothin' yet'he could fill up a pretty thick photo album titled “The Adolescent Years Of William Roberts.” Read on for the full interview…

By Joe La Puma

Complex: So Blood In The Sand is a third person shooter with a bunch of ammunition. What's your favorite gun to use in the game?

50 Cent: I like the 9mm action on it, the action pistol, the handgun. It's not as dramatic, like, you got a rocket launcher and a big machine gun, but I like to use the handgun.

Complex: Gaming reviews were really impressed by the helicopter aspects of the game, did you get to test that at all?

50 Cent: Yup, and that actually came from me liking Outrun as a game. There's that point where you're actually flying and running, because of the environment it came out the way it did. I threw out the idea and allowed the guys that actually do that to do it, to make the game come out as cool as possible and it came out amazing. Better than my initial idea, but of course I'm going to take credit for it.

Complex: There's a part of the game where you recruit girls at a strip club and send them to distract enemies. That sounds a little bit like Pimpin' Curly to us…

50 Cent: [Laughs] Yeah, that was early, that was two years ago. That concept has been around for ages, sending women to distract men. They make for a great distraction, especially attractive women, right?

Complex: Who would you say is the best shooter in the game besides you? Banks, Yayo, or Whoo Kid?

50 Cent: Well, I think they're fairly good, but I like to play as myself. Yayo doesn't play with me, he takes me off and puts him as the actual character. It's cool, when you're the actual character in it, it kind of makes you have a superhero’s vibe, it's like being in an action film where you're Hancock.

Complex: What’s the biggest difference between the first video game and this one?

50 Cent: There's a huge difference. There's a whole different studio creating it. Initially we started the concept with Vivendi'that's who we did Bulletproof with'and then their merger with Activision changed things around, so we went with THQ. I mean the whole process, it's totally different, the experience, the new music. Of course they have the hit music from Get Rich or Die Tryin', The Massacre and the Curtis album and as a person reaches a certain level of the game, they can unlock the actual music. Even if they're not a 50 Cent fan, they have an option to utilize a score produced by Swizz Beatz.

Complex: Not a lot of other rappers have video games but, Kanye said in article recently that when he was growing up, he dreamed of making a video game that features a giant penis chasing around vaginas. Do you think that makes for a good game?

50 Cent: I don't see how you make that one. Maybe you do a metaphor for those things. You'd have to change it around so it's not so aggressive. I don't see who's going to buy that. That might be like a game you could sell on a cell phone. Like a small game where they don't have to spend a lot of money marketing it.

Complex: If Rick Ross were a character in the game, what method would you use to take him out?

50 Cent: I don't know, because, I don't know where the police fit into the actual scenario in this one. If had to use a weapon against him in the game, it'd probably a rocket launcher, just to make sure that he's completely gone.

50 Cent has made it a tough 48 hours for Officer Ricky. But if he follows our suggestions, the Bawse could be back on top before you know it.

Well, we can’t say we didn’t see this one coming. Anyone who’s followed 50 Cent’s history of beef (II) knows full and well that Curtis doesn’t half step when it comes to embarrassing his opponents. So it was only a matter of time before Curtis’ latest nemesis, William Leonard Roberts II bka Rick Ross got the Southside Special.

Yesterday, 50 released a video of him taking one of Rick Ross’ baby’s mothers shopping for furs and Gucci bags. Was the hilariously embarassing move a career-ender for Officer Ricky? All eyes are now on the Boss, waiting to see how he reacts. If it were up to Complex, we’d advise Ross to respond using one of these methods…

#5: RECORD A SONG WITH THE REAL NORIEGA

• The rap public scoffed when Ross boasted that he knew “Noriega'the real Noriega” on his debut single, “Husltin’.” We still don’t believe the hyperbolic boast, but his “realness” would seem a lot less fraudulent if he finally hooked up with the former De Facto Leader of Panama on a track. We’d even settle for a phoned-in interlude live from the bing.

Above: RAWSE #1

Wondering what's the biggest trend at MAGIC this year? Nope, it's not cut and sew pieces, country-club attire, or seersucker. It's Rick Ross.

Walking around the tradeshow this week, it was evident that Kanye and Lupe have fallen off the trend-setter radar, and Officer Ross is the new sheriff in town. The hefty x grizzly beard collab was in full effect in Vegas, and although each carbon-copy was just a tad bit different, there's no denying these cats are channeling Rawse. After the jump, browse the a-alikes and vote on who you think had the best Rick Ross costume…

Rappers have been the subject of fake photo jobs before, but Officer Raws is the biggest boss we've seen thus far.

If having to deal with The Smoking Gun rummaging thorough his extensive paper trail wasn't enough, Ricky Ross is now facing the most extensive e-slaught of Photoshop fun in the history of the Internets.

Maybe Rawse deserves it'the dude still refuses to just accept the fact that everyone knows he rolled with the pigs back in the day, and that Noriega owes him jack shit. Hold your head Boss, this too shall pass. But before the shit-storm is over, we had to kick you while you’re down by compiling all the hilarious Officer Ross photos below. Tough break BAWSEEE. Leave us a comment and let us know which is your favorite.

Rappers like Rock Ross can lie, but pictures seldom do. Who's got some skeletons in the darkroom?

Today’s Smoking Gun expose seemed to put the nail in the coffin for Rick Ross’s ducktales that he was a) never a correctional officer and b) the victim of a cruel Photoshop prank by intarwebs hax0rs. (One quick sidenote: “Screw Rick Ross”? Pump your brakes, TSG. Why you hate-a the rappaz so much?).

One has to realize that if the Boobie Boy (and we’re not talking mantits) had only owned up to the rumors early, he could have saved himself the embarrassment that comes with being sonned by your own damn photo. Ricky isn’t the first to get hoisted by his own petard, word to the Bard–so we dug in the crates to serve up a delicious archive of ether. After the jump, peep some dark moments for some of your favorite performers, and vote on who caught the worst L.

Rick Ross’s Keys Opened Doors
Trick hinted at it, but TSG proved it. Yikes. Talk about screw music.

Dr. Dre Gets Wrecked
When Eazy-E and Dre got to beefing post-NWA, Eazy dug out Dre’s old album art from World Class Wreckin’ Cru’s 1985 album World Class. And yeah, that was only three years before Straight Outta Compton.

Prodigy’s Happy Feet
New York’s Summer Jam 2001 was hell on earth for Prodigy (zing!) when Jay-Z flashed a picture from Albert Johnson’s younger days as an entertainer. A dude still known as Ballerina P don’t want it with Hov'NOOOOOO!

The Game Gets Dumped
Back when 50 was dealing with his very first G-Unit defection (oh, how the time flies!), someone dug up Jayceon’s appearance on trash dating show Change of Heart, and everyone from Joe Budden to Yukmouth had a go.

Lil Wayne & Baby Lock Lips
Was it a Mob affectation? A M.O.B. affectation? Uh, sure. Either way, D’Wayne and Brian’s embrace was almost the kiss of death for Cash Money.

Pre-Glamour Ashanti
The queen of the Inc. was an unfortunate casualty of the 50-Ja Rule feud. “Am I trippin’,” Curtis asked, “or is her sideburns thick like Eddie Munster?” Then someone spread this picture around the web. Is it really Ashanti? We can’t say for sure, but the suggestion alone had a lot of us shook.
