Monday night, with a lot more ellipses, he posted, “Done. Forever. Blessings. Basketball is just a game. I will say it again. 14 years 250 million. Hold that. I’m good. Thank you jesus for the blessing. Thanks NBA.” The word is that he wants to pursue television and web opportunities, which means we probably haven’t seen the last of his him. One of the most bad-ass figures in sports announced his retirement yesterday: Donald Fehr, the longtime head of the Major League Baseball Player’s Association has decided to hang up his spikes, and chances are the MLBPA will be worse off for his absence.
In his 25-plus-year tenure, while other leagues adopted management-friendly policies like salary caps and saw their unions get broken, Fehr presided over the strongest player’s association in sports using four words: “no,” “no,” and “hell no.” Sure, one of his biggest “no”s backfired (steroids), but his constituents saw their salaries skyrocket under his watch (even if their balls shrank). For 18 years, NBA players have had nightmares about getting fingered by Dikembe Mutombo. Get your mind out of the gutter—we’re talking about the infamous finger wag that the 7′2″ Houston Rockets center used to taunt people with after he’d rejected them. The 42-year-old Congolese shot blocker, who won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award four times and ranks as the league’s second most prolific shot blocker ever (he averaged almost three blocks a game for his career), is retiring after suffering a knee injury in a playoff game Tuesday.
