With Loon praising Islam live on Al Jazzeera, we're looking back at hip-hop's most shocking converts.

It used to be said that rap’s a war zone and that nobody’s safe. And, like real war, its veterans can be left with their mental a little out of place. Some retreat from the limelight to try and rebuild their lives, while others attempt to retool their act for a much-hoped-for revival. Then there are those who are so troubled they could only find solace is in the arms of the Lord.

Yesterday, we learned via Middle Eastern news channel Al Jazeera (where else?) that former Bad Boy artist, Loon, has given up his secular ways and converted to Islam. Forgive us for the yawn that followed our initial WTF, it’s just that we’ve seen this before. Loon is only the latest rapper to find religion, check out some more…

Reason: Cam’ron and Jim Jones say Betha “ran to Atlanta” ’cause some dudes in NYC wanted to extort money from him. But Ma$e claims to have heard the Lord’s calling (while high on weed), and that’s what lead him to leave behind his multi-platinum rap career to start Mason Betha Ministries with his wife.

Known as one of the most tongue-in-cheek rappers in the game, MCA came back dropping nuggets like this: “We have a lot of machines and we think of ourselves as really advanced. But in fact we’re not very modern compared to the Tibetans, who have a more inwardly evolved society in terms of their psychology and philosophy.
Is religion making everyone crazy? Check out the trailer for the new documentary from the director of Borat.

Does religion make us crazy, or does it keep us away from the edge of insanity? This is the question that Superhead’s ex boyfriend Bill Maher addresses in an upcoming documentary called Religulous, which will hit theatres on October 3. Directed by Larry Charles (Borat, Seinfeld), the film features interviews with a wide variety of believers and religious figures, from Christian Senators to Gay Muslim activists.

“I wanted to make a documentary, and I wanted it to be funny,” says Maher, who is famously anti-organized religion. “In fact, since there is nothing more ridiculous than the ancient mythological stories that live on as today’s religions, this movie would try to be a real knee-slapper. Unless, of course, you’re religious; then you might not like it.” Watch the trailer after the jump.
Sure Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes may be grooming baby Suri to becoming a polished Scientologist, but genie-in-a-bottle turned milf-of-the-moment Christina Aguilera seems to be focused on bringing up her newborn baby Max with the religious guidance of the Nintendo entourage. It's been reported that this “Last Supper” painting by artist Misha hangs from the wall of the Aguilera nursery. You too can own a piece of the Donkey Kong-Jesus dynasty, the 18×10 inch print is in its 2nd run, limited to 75 pieces, and comes hand signed/numbered by the artist. $75, www.nineteeneightyeight.com

Take a trip to Xiahe, a remote Chinese county on the China/Tibet border, and you might witness a gang of Buddhist monks blasting each other with submachine guns. No, this isn’t a crappy American Chow Yun-Fat movie'it’s “Counter Strike.”

The classic terrorism combat game has become a favorite with the younger monks at the local Labrang Monastery, who unwind by playing at a nearby Internet cafe. “Apparently, the monks are not permitted to drink alcohol, eat meat or be married, but it's totally acceptable for them to play violent video games,” said an employee of Gearbox Software, who witnessed them in action. Good to hear someone can still tell the difference between fantasy and reality.
