TEAM MAYHEM! Creators Tone Rodriguez, Mike Le, William Wilson, and Tyrese Gibson with Percy Carey

[Each week, Complex columnist Percy Carey a.k.a. MF Grimm dives into the world of comic books with industry interviews, reviews and more. All MF Grimm music can now be purchased on Itunes]

Ladies and Gentlemen, I’m going to keep it short this week because I’m still recuperating from the Tyrese Gibson’s MAYHEM! launch party. Tyrese, you are the muthafuckin’ man! It was an amazing event filled with celebrities, great people, beautiful women all around and good food and (did I forget to say beautiful women all around?) I kicked it with the MAYHEM! creators Tyrese Gibson, Mike Le, William Wilson and the legendary Mr. Tone Rodriguez at Lucky Strike (LA Live). I even had an opportunity to sit down one on one with my friend, director/executive producer Micheal Bay (Transformers 1 and 2).

I won’t lie to you, I was suppose to cover the event, but I was too busy being interviewed by the press and partying. I let you down, Complex readers (blame it on the alcohol), but in my defense, you have not partied until you’ve hung out with Tila Tequila and ElectrikRed (I just couldn’t help myself…could you?). Tyrese, you sure know how to throw a party, my brother!. I can’t wait for the Tyrese Gibson’s MAYHEM! party at San Diego Comic Con JULY 2009—it’s going to be off the chain. Now, readers, although I was slacking because of macking, I still didn’t forget you (we’re family): I have some wonderful shots from the event for you to check out. Enjoy…

P.S.: Tila, if you’re reading this, I’ll see you and your “Army” at San Diego Comic Con. Thanks for the goodbye kiss ; )

There’s rumors brewing about a meeting between Avi Arad and Tyrese Gibson at a trendy LA eatery named Cecconis on Monday. Well, here is the PROOF! I just obtained these photos of Mr Gibson and Mr. Arad (an a unidentified guest) leaving the restaurant from www.humormillmag.com. It’s assumed the dinner meeting was about Mr. Gibson playing as Luke Cage or Black Panther and there’s some rumbling of him being courted to create a comic book for MARVEL. I’m not sure what was exactly said yet, but I will personally contact www.humormill.mag, since they were on the scene and see what I can get for you. If anyone get updates, please post them here. Thank you.

In this week's column, MF Grimm talks to the man behind the new anime "This Day" and some classic advertisements.

[Each week, Complex columnist Percy Carey a.k.a. MF Grimm dives into the world of comic books with industry interviews, reviews and more. All MF Grimm music can be purchased on Itunes]

Do you remember those Sprite commercials in the '90s with Large Pro, Bambaataa, Common and others? When I saw those commercials, I remember feeling like hip-hop finally was getting respect it was due. Although I never met the creator of the commercials, I knew the person who created them had a love for hip-hop that equaled mine (if not more) and I always wanted to meet the mastermind behind those ads and thank him.

Reggieknow was the person who started that creative revolution (Reggie also designed the label for Vitamin Water) and it was a pleasure meeting him recently. I’m sure you’ll feel the same way once you read this interview…

Percy Carey: Where were you born? And when did you realize you wanted to work in the comic book industry?

Reggieknow: I was born in Go-Ill (the city side of Chicago) and Dem Dare raised me on Michigan Avenue. Well, actually I'm more of an anime/manga air conditioner (it's being a fan but cooler). I collected only X-Men in grammar school, which I'm happy to still own.

Percy Carey: Could you please tell the audience about yourself?

Reggieknow: I'm Reggieknow, the illustrator and one of the writers of the urban anime THIS DAY and the chief creative officer and partner of www.ad-itive.com. Look me up under ceilings.

Percy Carey: Can you explain to the readers about your profession?

Reggieknow: I lead creative executions in marketing, advertising, grassroots and P.R…from conservative brands such as Colgate to edgier ones such as Truth.

Percy Carey: Would you mind giving some words of wisdom to the readers who are interested entering in your profession?

Reggieknow: To quote the 1988 ad campaign, in the words of 1988 hip-hop… “stay in school and don't be a fool” [Laughs]. Seriously, it's as simple as educating yourself on being a creative writer or art director. The same seriousness in approach one would take with any profession. It's all dedication at the end of the day, which goes back to education, which still goes back to 1988 hip-hop.

Percy Carey: Do you recommend any books about how to enter your field?

Reggieknow: It's so many books on advertising greats and everybody's opinion on how to do great advertising. I really wouldn't suggest starting there. The perfect place to start is within yourself and finding that inner creative. While doing that the One Show award books, the CA's are great for inspiration. Most of the books I've read on advertising, I felt to just be one's opinion, so I wouldn't suggest a title. Concentrating on your creative mind is first before clouding your head with others.

Percy Carey: What was a lesson you would want to share with people who want to enter your profession?

Reggieknow: Heavy, heavy research. The more you know about them and their order of operation the better for you in finding your lane. I enjoy the advertising arts but I have a dislike for the business of advertising, please pardon.

Percy Carey: Name one comic book store you recommend people to visit when in Los Angeles?

Reggieknow: I guess it would have to be Meltdown, but again anime & action figures come first for me.

Percy Carey: Who is your favorite comic book artist?

Reggieknow: Jack Kirby, all the above as far as comic books.

Percy Carey: Can you inform our readers about any of your upcoming projects?

Reggieknow: My partner Nowenen and I are shopping the urban anime THIS DAY. We're doing collabs with www.unionlosangeles.com with Chris Gibbs. Jewelry with www.melodyehsani.com and a list of things I can't speak on just yet.

Percy Carey: Where do you see your self doing in the next five years? And where do your industry going?

Reggieknow: Well time itself is faster, so THIS DAY for sure on a larger scale. Technology also being fast and accompanied with the power and say so of consumers, most likely the ad*itive will just bury itself deeper in culture.

Percy Carey: Please tell the audience about your project This Day?

Reggieknow: THIS DAY is an urban anime cable feature and series, in short best described as Seinfeld meets Yo!MTV Raps. It's about having “one of those days” EVERYDAY. A Murphy's Law through the urban experience. It's the humor of Family Guy with the anime story telling edge of Perfect Blue, but hip-hop. It's topped with an artistic feeling of Ralph Bakshi's animated film Coonskin meets Sin City.

Percy Carey: How did you come up with the ideas for the Sprite commercials? And will we see more in the future?

Reggieknow: My growing up in the best times of hip-hop culture, I would have to say. Because of that, I acquired a vast knowledge of the culture. That in addition to my interests in Asian pop culture as a teen. I've tried to work with Sprite during these times, but they have different directions in mind. The THIS DAY collabs carry a hip-hop essence that has the taste of what the Sprite ads were doing in the '90s for sure.

Percy Carey: Do you have any plans dealing with film or television? If so can you talk about them?

Reggieknow: Yes, heavy discussions are taking place with THIS DAY as far as television and film. I'd rather make mention of those things once it's signed and sealed, very exciting though.

Percy Carey: What’s your opinion on the state of hip hop?

Reggieknow: Hip-hop has created many jobs for people and a great source of income, so for that I'm grateful. It's not balanced at all and I wish there was more available that suits my taste, but I search hard and I do find what I need to make my killer tapes, so no complaints.

Percy Carey: How do you feel about the state of advertising today?

Reggieknow: I think the ad game is just that, a game like everything else. I get tired of everyone thinking they're smarter than everybody else.

Percy Carey: Do you still see room for growth in the music industry and comic books industry? If so how?

Reggieknow: As far as music, I think it depends on ones definition of growth. What many may call growth, I may consider taking steps backwards and vice versa. With comics… totally, with all the movies happening, etc.

Percy Carey: What is your view on the current economy? Has it affected the entertainment industry in your opinion?

Reggieknow: The economy being this way was designed many years ago and it has affected EVERYTHING. It's the Y2K joke on the American public but even more polished and on a grander scale.

Percy Carey: Can you squeeze in a MF Grimm cameo in your next commercial?

Reggieknow: I suggest we do a commercial on one of your many projects so it can stay true. A lot of the people that work in the commercial field and execute hip-hop ads are “internet” hip-hop experts. Us doing it on our own keeps it true.

Percy Carey: What inspired the design of your ride?

Reggieknow: It's based on Joe/Jason's G-2 race car from Gatchaman/Battle of the Planets, which is an anime series I grew up watching. Wow, it's like driving an action figure!

Percy Carey: You and I both share the same respect for an emcee named Sir Ibu please school the readers about him?

Reggieknow: Hey man, that's a personal favorite… Sir Ibu was the main rapper of Divine Force Crew. 5%er rapper from BK, I believe. Anyway, “Holy War”, “Peace Maker,” forget about it. You hear a “Holy War” verse in Ghostface's “Mighty Healthy” hook. Fur coats and Bally's, there is no touching the god Ibu. Oh yeah, I used “Holy War” on my reel online.

Percy Carey: With the success of comic book properties turned to film Iron Man, The Dark Knight, Watchmen, and Transformers, Who do you think should play John Solo: Secret Agent in the live action featured film: Brad Pitt or George Clooney?

Reggieknow: Brad Pitt may be better for the pocket, but either is great.

Percy Carey: How can the readers get in contact with you?

Reggieknow: reggieknow@thisdaysucks.com, facebook, myspace.com/thisdaysucks, twitter and myfacespacebooktwitter

Percy Carey: Who would win a fight between Superman and Sentry? And why?

Reggieknow: Sentry, because I've never been into DC comics.

Our comic book columnist recently ran sat down with the star and writer of his favorite TV show. Will his dream of an A.D. graphic novel come true?

[Each Wednesday, Complex columnist Percy Carey a.k.a. MF Grimm dives into the world of comic books with industry interviews, reviews and more.]

If you know anything about me, then you have to know that Arrested Development is my all time favorite television show; and when Fox chose to cancel the show, I found that to be the stupidest move ever by a network (Please give me the name of the jackass who made that executive decision?). Well, after a long period of depression (due to my lack of having the Bluth family to laugh at), I was informed that Arrested Development was going to become an actual full-length featured film. It was rumored there were a few slight hold ups due to negotiations, (that’s expected) but just knowing that there was a chance to see something new from Ron Howard, and the brilliant minds who write and cast on that show, made life a little better for me.

As I was hanging out at Meltdown a few weeks back, I noticed there were a large amount of television shows that were now comic books (which I think is cool), and gave me an idea; I said to myself, What if I transform my favorite television show into a comic book?

Then I thought to myself, How could I make this dream an reality? First, I spoke about it to one of my friends and business partner to get his perspective, and he figured out the best way to approach the situation. So after we came up with our plan, we decided to go sit down at a coffee shop and have some coffee/tea and go over some contracts (you know, executive type stuff). As we sat at our table, I noticed one of the three men at the table next to us resembled Arrested Development’s George “GOB” Bluth II (played by Will Arnett); then when he actually spoke, I knew it was him.

I said to myself, Could this be true? The creator has heard my cries and answered my prayers? I didn’t want to bother Mr. Arnett, because he and the other two gentleman, at his table, were in deep discussion, so I was polite, and did not bother them. I needed to go inside of the coffee shop, and as I went inside, one of the gentleman that was sitting with Mr. Arnett entered inside as well. Since we were both waiting on line, I introduced myself to him, and gave him my credentials in comic books, and then asked him if he was sitting with Will Arnett, and how I’m a big fan of the show Arrested Development; The gentleman replied back “Really? That’s great, I was one of the writer for the show! Why don’t you come join us, I know Will would love to meet you.”

I thought to myself, Writer of the show? …Has the creator heard my cries?… and answered my prayers? I asked the gentleman his name, and he said “Jim” so then Jim and I went back outside and he introduced me to Mr. Arnett, and we discussed a few business ideas (due to confidentiality agreement, I’m not at liberty to discuss the details of our conversation).

The moral to my story is that you never know what life has in store for you, and to never think that your dream is too big to become a reality (if Pinocchio can become a real boy, you can too!). As for the creator finally hearing my cries, and answering my prayers about creating a Arrested Development comic book?…stay tuned. So, I would like to say to Mr. James “Jim” Vallely… you’re a hell of a guy, thank you for everything, and I’ll talk to you soon. And by the way, to all of you Complex readers who keep asking me about how to get my music, you can purchase all MF GRIMM’s music at Itunes..It’s a smart move. See you next week'until then, dream BIG.

Our resident comic book columnist gives his official in-depth review of this epic video game clash.

[Each Wednesday, Complex columnist Percy Carey a.k.a. MF Grimm dives into the world of comic books with industry interviews, reviews and more.]

Once again, I’m doing a review, but this time, we’re shaking things up. To the ever growing list of topics in the Comic Book Corner, I’ve decided to add one for all you electric maniacs out there: video game reviews. And what a better way to start than with my review of the perfect combination of two worlds: Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe…

Let’s be clear, I wanted to play this game because I wanted to see Raiden beat Superman into the ground. I don’t have anything against Superman, nor against DC, but the idea of the god of lightning (not the character from that OTHER comic publisher) taking out the last son of Krypton is just exciting. However, right from the main screen, which is Scorpion stalking Batman, there is so much more to the game than what most people would think.

For those classic Kombat fans, the old arcade ladder is still there. This time, there is a twist. Because there’s two side to the game, you can choose to have a Kombat character fight other MKs or DC or a mix of both. Same for the DC characters, but then again, that should be a given. But the real part of the game, is the story, where you are given the choice to follow either Mortal Kombat or DC. Either side you choose, it’s the world is ending and you have to save it. The real story is either side you chose, the most powerful character (Raiden and Superman) in each realm causes the most powerful villain in each realm to cross the boundaries of reality. This causes the two universes to begin merging, and the characters from each cross lines. Eventually the two sides fight to save their respective side, when it is revealed that the two villains (Shao Kahn and Darkseid) have merged, thus causing the merger. You have to split them to save both universes.

So that’s the game in a nutshell. Now my thoughts. The game is killer. I love it. The moves are amazing, the graphics are stunning, and the storyline is enthralling. That been said, I do have a few things that I’d like to state. The new kombat modes, the close up, falling, and busting through walls are cheap. In the right arena, you can win a fight unfairly fast. It kind of takes the fun out of a hard hitting duel when one side can win by knocking you down to the lower level. On top of that, the dialogue for the storyline is, I’m sorry comic gods, poor. It’s clunky, and frankly is at times, not the way a human would even speak. Beyond that, I’d like to see some better characters from DC in the game. But that’s my own personal gripe.

Beyond all that, I can honestly say, if you are a comic fan or a gamer, you should get this game. Even if you beat the story, arcade mode is still great fun, and each character has an epilogue, like Sub-Zero staying and becoming a superhero. Beat everything, get all the endings, and it is still one of the best party games out there. Everyone can find their character and duke it out.

The games that are being released currently have some of the highest reviews, and MK/DC is no exception. Strong story, smooth game play, and Lex Luthor in his battle suit. Well, two out of three isn’t bad. The game has been stream lined from the other story based MK games, so the unnecessary frills have been taken out. They’ve finally left it with everything a fighting game needs: a story explaining the two sides coming together, and an arcade fight mode. So, if you like fight games, dig out 60 bucks and get the next generation. But let me warn some of you now: if you are a die hard fan of Johnny Cage or Martian Manhunter, I mean there is no one else you like, you dress like them for Halloween, brace yourself. They were not included. Begin weeping. For everyone else, begin the battle for the safety of the world.

With the TV show getting "rebooted," our resident comic book columnist can't get enough KITT.

[Each week, Complex columnist Percy Carey a.k.a. MF Grimm dives into the world of comic books with industry interviews, reviews and more.]

Since so many properties out there are merging the lines of media, I’d like to point out a few that should make that jump. So, in true Letterman style, I will be bringing you the top ten reasons why TV shows, movies, and other such things should become comics.

So this week, we start with a TV show that has been saved from the fire not once but twice: when it was remade from the original version, and then again when the network decided to revitalize it instead of canceling it. So without further adieu, I give you my top ten reasons why Knight Rider should become a comic book…

#10: Any excuse for David Hasselhoff and the new Michael Knight to make an appearance at Comic Con is worth its weight in gold.

#9: Because it had its series revitalized, not canceled like some shows this fall (hang your head in shame, Christian Slater). And what better way to keep KITT alive than put him in print.

#8: It’s a talking car. A talking car. End of story.

#7: Car chases, shootouts, solving mysteries, and bringing crooks to justice. Sums up Knight Rider. Sums up comic books. Do they go together? Seems like asking if you’d be out of place wearing a green and red sweater to the office Christmas party.

#6: Did I mention the talking car?

#5: Every time an '80s property gets optioned, an angel gets its wings.

#4: While we’d miss out on the sweet '80s theme music in a comic, the new car transforms. And that’s cool.

#3: Imagine: Jim Lee, handling the Knight Rider project. Goosebumps.

#2: Because the Frasier comic was missing the bad-ass flare that a talking car and gunfights can provide.

#1: With all of the '70s and '80s shows and movies being remade, let’s start the action television trifecta off right. First, the Knight Rider comic. Then, move onto Magnum, P.I. and Macguyver. With Short Circuit being re-imagined, let’s bring back the '80s, but do it right this time. Show the youth of today the three greatest TV action heroes, and it all starts with a man and his car.

The new Knight Rider series airs Wednesday nights at 8 p.m. on NBC.

Read our comic columnist's official review of the 3-issue zombie-killin' 'Undead Task Force' collection, along with his favorite new releases.

[Each Wednesday, Complex columnist Percy Carey a.k.a. MF Grimm dives into the world of comic books with industry interviews, reviews and more.]

UTF (Undead Task Force) is the story of a government group with the sole intent of destroying the things that go bump in the night. They take out, obviously, the undead, in all forms. The team is shown starting with a nest of zombies before being called in to deal with a swarm of vampires. It’s a task force that his been in place for apparently the better part of a century, if not longer, and includes such members as Lee Harvey Oswald (because apparently in the UTF universe, Kennedy didn’t quite have a pulse, unless he wasn’t the target…) and, possibly Poncho Villa. So, enough with the background, on to the comic…

Personally, I think the three-issue series is one of comics’ greatest challenges. 66 pages is not a lot of time to tell background, character, plot, and still save a page or two for the killer action scene out of a movie trailer. Usually, most writers sacrifice some of the less important aspects (i.e. background, some character aspects, and even a little plot) to squeeze in more action, because let’s be honest, comics and movies are there to entertain…and blow stuff up. But the beautiful thing about UTF is that most of that stuff is intricately weaved into the wonderous tapestry of storyline. Too flowery? Sorry, went into professor mode. The UTF writers saw what a great story needs, and made sure that every aspect was touched on to give a more complete feel. We learn about the characters, get a glimpse of the history and background of the task force, and get a great “world domination” plot through the whole thing. You know those villains that somewhere say “First (insert city here), then the world”? Well, that’s what you get with Sandy, the vampire leader.

But what sets this story apart from the clichés is the execution. While some of the dialogue is a tad choppy, some might even say unnatural (and not supernatural, I mean to say that most humans don’t really speak like that), the story itself has all the feelings of a great summer blockbuster. A team sent in to a building, and the situation gets out of hand. Someone break out the popcorn and 5 dollar sodas, how many stories have we seen with a plot like that and have you white knuckled, sucked to the back of your seat, risking bladder infection because you don’t want to go to the bathroom in case you miss the next pulse pounding moment? Every movie that comes out between May and September.

So, leave some of the clunky dialogue at the door, but keep a seriously dynamic and heart thumping storyline. I can say that there are so many opportunities to learn more about the back story, the characters, and the council of vampires, but because of the low page count, they had to be streamlined for another time. All in all, the comic is fantastic, it keeps you turning the pages for more story and action, the characters are great, and the storyline is something that we can all relate to. Imagine (for those of you not in LA) your local jail being overrun by a band of vampires, and infecting the worst of the worst with the ability to live forever. Creepy thought. As for the stuff that had to wait'more back story and character development'that will probably show up in the sequel series. So my only question to the creators is: when is that going to happen?

I had always heard that women don’t go to comic book stores. If you’re very, very lucky, you might catch a glimpse of one out of the corner of your eye. But in a stroke of luck, not only did I catch a glimpse, but I met one.

Angie Mach, affectionately called Angie GoGo, is not only a comic book fan, nigh a geek, but she is also one of the most striking women I have ever met. She’s an avid reader, a deep-seated gamer, an aspiring actress, and now a good friend of mine. We sat down to talk about her love of comics. Percy Carey: Where are you from?

Angie GoGo: Toronto

Percy Carey: What Comics do you like?

Angie GoGo: I’m a fan of Vertigo and everything they do. I think all of the series that they do are really interesting. They’re comics that are on a different line of thinking than all the rest.

Percy Carey: Any favorite books?

Angie GoGo: I dig 100 Bullets. That’s a really great title. There’s more, I just have to think of them.

Percy Carey: Do you have a favorite store?

Angie GoGo: Meltdown or amazon.com, everything is available there.

Percy Carey: How did you get the name GoGo?

Angie GoGo: A friend gave me that name, because I’m always on the move.

Percy Carey: Is there a hero you’d like to be? Or a power you’d like to have?

Angie GoGo: Wow, that’s a tough choice. I think Superman’s powers, that would be fun. Maybe the ability to be invisible, or be like Peter Petrelli, absorb the powers of others.

Percy Carey: Who would you like as a hero for boyfriend?

Angie GoGo: Batman, because who wouldn’t like to date Bruce? Or maybe Gambit, he’s cute.

Angie GoGo: How do you feel about Villains? Think they’re hot?

Angie GoGo: Oh, definitely The Joker.

Percy Carey: Any favorite writers?

Angie GoGo: Steph Meyer'love Twilight. I also love Michael Crichton.

Percy Carey: So if you’re always on the go, when do you have time to read?

Angie GoGo: I have to read at night

Percy Carey: Which comic book movie did you like better: Ironman or Dark Knight?

Angie GoGo: Dark Knight. I’m such a big Batman fan, have to go with that one.

Percy Carey: Can you talk about any upcoming projects?

Angie GoGo: Currently, I’m working on a video game film project, but that one is still being written. I also have a friend who wants me to be in a movie, but that’s still coming together.

Percy Carey: What do you want to do in Hollywood?

Angie GoGo: Mostly I want to act, but right now hard to get in. The economy makes it tough, all the strikes, and the cutbacks the studios have been making as of late.

Percy Carey: What do you think of men in comics, or even those that read comics?

Angie GoGo: I personally like comic guys, I think they’re a little more intelligent. There’s so much reading that goes with comics. It takes a different mind set to read them than other stuff like watching films. Guys who write have to really craft a world more than other creators have to. I have a lot of friends who read, but they tend to get a little busy, so it becomes side thing. Personally I wish I had a lot more time to just read comics.

Percy Carey: Do you have a favorite character?

Angie GoGo: That’s a tough choice; hard to choose just one, I like a lot. Jean Grey/Phoenix, Batman, Joker, Ironman, Riddler.

Percy Carey: Who would win in a fight, Wolverine or Superman?

Angie GoGo: Again, tough call. But in the end, I think Wolverine, because he can regenerate, he can get back up.

Percy Carey: Would you like to be a hero yourself?

Angie GoGo: Sure, but no cheesy costumes, and definitely not too slutty. My costume would need boots, maybe knee highs, which would be sexy, practical and not too slutty. I’d also want shorts and not a body suit. A v-neck top to make fighting easier. I’d definitely need a mask, to protect my identity. For my colors…I’d say baby blue, white, and black. I’d really like to have my costume be clothes by bebe.

Percy Carey: Are there any characters you don’t like?

Angie GoGo: There’s not many, but the ones I don’t like, I really don’t like. I’d say the best examples are the original Green Lantern, the Fantastic 4, and maybe the Hulk.

Percy Carey: How do you feel about Frank Miller?

Angie GoGo: I Love Frank Miller, everything he does, you know, I really want to see Spirit when it comes out.

Percy Carey: Have you thought of anymore books, Vertigo or Dark Horse that you especially like?

Angie GoGo: Again, I wish I had more time to read all the books on my lists. There’s so many that I see at the shop that I want to read and just to have the time. I’d really love to read Fables, over at Vertigo, and I’d love to sit down and dig into Sandman there as well. I was a big fan of Preacher while it was going. That series was so deep, I’d love to see them turn it into a television show. I had heard that they were working on that, and I can’t wait to see it actually come through.

Percy Carey: Anything else?

Angie GoGo: Also, I like Wanted a lot. I know it’s from Top Cow, but it’s really good.

Percy Carey: Do you have any other geeky passions outside of comics?

Angie GoGo: My sister and I are really into video games. Kitty and I play all the time. Other than comics, game release dates are the things she and I look forward to the most. I’ve been looking for someone to play Halo with but haven’t found anyone yet. Right now there’s a whole bunch of games coming out that are really exciting. Fallout3, Resistance2, Mortal Kombat vs. DC, Gears of War 2. There’s a huge list, I can’t wait to play them all.

Percy Carey: Which system do you prefer?

Angie Go GO: Well currently the setup is, my sister has a PS3, and I have an Xbox 360. Don’t get overloaded having them all constantly in one place, but we cover everything.

Percy Carey: So, how do you feel about Spongebob?

Angie GoGo: No way, no Nickelodeon.

Percy Carey: Do you like Avatar?

Angie GoGo: You know, I haven’t heard that much about it, and I’ve never seen it.

Percy Carey: Is there a way that our readers can contact you if they have any questions or comments for you?

Angie GoGo: Oh yeah, of course. The best way would be my myspace page. I’d love to hear from people, and especially get some new reading suggestions if people have them.

Percy Carey: It was a pleasure talking with you. I think you’ve opened my eyes and hopefully the readers to just what type of fan is really out there reading comics.

Angie GoGo: It’s a pleasure. Love sitting down and talking with you, have to do it again. Maybe I’ll come back and talk about some of those projects when they get further along.

Percy Carey: I look forward to it.

As an update, I spoke to Angie , and we were both saddened by the loss of writer Michael Crichton. Angie was definitely sad to see one of her favorite authors of all time pass on. Our thoughts and prayers go to his family. Crichton had been battling cancer for several years, and died on Nov. 4, 2008. We will miss his amazing words and rich stories that have inspired other writers, filmmakers, and readers.

Our resident comic columnist talks to the creator of books like 30 Days Of Night and Simon Dark about the future of Gotham.

[Each Wednesday, Complex columnist Percy Carey a.k.a. MF Grimm dives into the world of comic books with industry interviews, reviews and more.]

Steve Niles single-handily re-invented the genre of comic book horror. He not only created Simon Dark (DC Comics) but he is also the mastermind behind box office smash 30 Days of Night (IDW), and Criminal Macabre (Dark Horse) and countless other titles under his belt. Steve’s books are the only thing able to scare Bonecrusher. Sit back and learn more about the living legend and see what he’s up to next…

Percy Carey: Where were you born, and when did you realize you wanted to be in the comic book industry?

Steve Niles: I was born in New Jersey in 1965. I realized I wanted to be in comics around 1975…but it took a few more decades to actually bust in.

Percy Carey: What are some of the titles you’ve worked on?

Steve Niles: I started self-publishing books with Clive Barker and Richard Matheson, then later I continued to write my own titles like 30 Days of Night, The Lurkers and Criminal Macabre. I have also worked on Batman, the Creeper and Superman for DC. I’ve done hundreds of books. It’s a little hard to list here.

Percy Carey: What inspired you to create Simon Dark? And why did you pick Gotham City to be Simon’s home?

Steve Niles: I created Simon in an attempt to create a “horror superhero”. I wound up riffing on one of my favorite themes, Frankenstein, and came up with a boy made up of different human parts who didn’t know who he was. It was my editor Joey at DC’s suggestion to use Gotham. I liked the idea because Gotham is its own character.

Percy Carey: The children of Gotham City sing a song about Simon Dark. How did the children first hear about this song?

Steve Niles: The children made up the song.

Percy Carey: What are the possibilities of a Simon Dark/Batman cross over?

Steve Niles: Absolutely zero. Batman is a big character and he tends to take over books. I’d love to see Simon interact with other DC characters, but not the Dark Knight.

Percy Carey: What can we expect from Simon Dark in the future? And what’s the chance of seeing a Simon Dark film? Especially with the box office success of The Dark Knight, bringing another character from Gotham City to the big screens sounds like another box office smash to me. What do you think?

Steve Niles: I’ve already had some meetings about a Simon Dark film. It’s very early, but we all agree there’s something there to work with. He’s a unique character with lots of possibilities.

Percy Carey: Can you tell the readers about your graphic novel The Lost Ones with Zune? And what inspired you to create the character Dr. Revolt?

Steve Niles: I was hired by a pal of mine to create a book that would reflect the “spirit” of Zune. No product pushing, so I was in. I tried to create a story that four artists could each take a role in, sort of like a relay race. I love what the artists did. It’s one of the more unusual books I’ve done, and not horror, which is a nice change of pace for me.

Percy Carey: I’m a fan of Ashley Woods, who you collaborated with on Hellspawn. Will you two collaborate again?

Steve Niles: Ashley and I are in constant contact and always working on something. We have a rather large project we are working on now, but I can’t say any more just yet. I know, I’m such a tease.

Percy Carey: Can you offer any words of wisdom to the readers that want to enter in your profession?

Steve Niles: Do it because you love it, not to get rich. You will be disappointed if money is your only motivation, because it takes a long time and persistence to get through the door.

Percy Carey: Are you able to speak about any upcoming projects for the readers?

Steve Niles: My main projects right now are Batman: Gotham After Midnight for DC with artist Kelley Jones, Epilogue, a new series from IDW with Kyle Hotz, and a film I will be writing for John Carpenter. He is one of my idols, so a chance to work with him is heart-stopping.

Percy Carey: You’re also a musician. What are the possibilities of Steve Niles recording an album in the future?

Steve Niles: I was in a band, Gray Matter. We just had a 25th year reunion show, but we have no plans beyond that as yet.

Percy Carey: Who would win a fight between Chucky from Child’s Play vs The Leprechan, and why?

Steve Niles: I’d have to go with Chucky because he has more films.

Percy Carey: How can the Complex readers learn more about you?

Steve Niles: Just drop by www.steveniles.com or my Facebook page or my MySpace page.

Percy Carey: Thank you for your time Steve.

Steve Niles: Thank you!

AND NOW, A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM PERCY CAREY:

TYRESE TRANSFORMS COMICS

This just in, actor/singer Tyrese Gibson (Transformers, Death Race) is breaking into the comic book game in major way. A reliable source has confirmed that Gibson has secured a deal with a yet to named comic book publisher to create a new comic book property set to debut in 2009.

Gibson all but confirms the rumor in this interview with “The Spill” blog site; check it out at the 11 minute mark.

Now we here at “The Percy Carey Show” aren’t the type to let speculation run wild. So we’re trying to get in touch with Tyrese’s people to get to the bottom of things. What’s the property? Which publisher? Who’s the creative team?
Percy Carey: Where were you born and when did you know that you loved comic books?

Dana Davidson: I was born in Los Angeles, California. I realized I had a love for comic books when I was, I have no idea how old I was but I think It was before I was 10 years old. A friend of the family owned a comic books store and they gave me my first comic, ‘Death.’ Which I fell in love with.

Percy Carey: What do you do for a living?

Dana Davidson: This is a hard question for me, being a Gemini with a Gemini rising, hokey pokey superstitious stuff, right? That being said, I’m seriously a Jane of all trades. I am a writer for a downtown Los Angeles magazine called, ‘Citizen LA’ as well as for www.fatally-yours.com where I review movies, interview people, and write articles. Currently I am shopping scripts, writing a pulp novel, among other writing endeavors. I also work in post production in the film industry, model and act in my spare time, and just for fun, I make experimental films, and horror and comedy shorts. I have worked every aspect of film/television making, from PA to producer and everything in between. I prefer to have a more freelance and temporary type schedule so I can live my life to the fullest and not be bound to, what to me is grueling, the schedule of the 9am-5pm life.

Percy Carey: What’s your favorite comic book title?

Dana Davidson: The Sandman. Hands down. The first 6 books are my favorite, Neil Gaiman is such a brilliant writer.

Percy Carey: Who’s your favorite writer?

Dana Davidson: Another tough question! Gosh. Well, in comics my favorite is Neil Gaiman. In other writings, I’ve gotta say Charles Bukowski, George Orwell, Aldous Huxley, Hunter S. Thompson, and Ayn Rand.

Percy Carey: Who’s your favorite comic book illustrator?

Dana Davidson: That is a really hard question to answer… I’ve got friends who are illustrators… Well, how about all of the illustrators that are good!

Percy Carey: Who’s your favorite comic book character and why?

Dana Davidson: I would be Morpheus, the Lord of Dreams from ‘Sandman’ because he is wise, mysterious, powerful, fun, and sexy. I’d marry him in a heart beat.

Percy Carey: If you could be any comic book super hero who would it be? and why?

Dana Davidson: I’d be Lobo because he is so fucked, so powerful, so interesting, so ridiculously hilarious, that a life like that can only make one stronger, more beautiful, more insane to be able to experience things even more fully. Wait, you said super hero… hmmm… Well, his entire planet had to die right? I mean, the guy was bored and needed something to do! Seriously, (as in not seriously) the main character has to stay entertained otherwise we are bored as well. Hmmm. That was so insensitive of me to say, I am going to hell…Ha! How about, see this is a hard one for me since I am into the bad guys. I am picking two. Hellboy and Ironman, Wait, take that back, Buffy is a comic book now. I’d be Buffy from Buffy the Vampire Slayer cause the scene in the television show where she and Spike finally have sex, while they are falling through the breaking apart building, is so raw and rad. I’d be Buffy and kick some ass, although I haven’t had time to read the comic, like I said, I’m going to hell.

Percy Carey: Which comic book character would you consider your ideal dream man and why?

Dana Davidson: Go ahead and call me crazy but I’d say Lobo, he is hilarious and a killer, what more could a girl ask for. Any comic book character that is an outlaw, a biker, and an anti-hero, has my heart. In real life I try my hardest to not fall for the bad boys, the tattooed, motorcycle riding, hardened men, but gotta say, that’s what is familure to me, those were the guys I grew up with, and what I find sexy. You know, in my experience those men can be the most loyal friends a girl could hope for, and that is what is sexy, it’s the loyalty, the passion, the anger, the life experience, the feeling of community and taking care of your own. That’s what gets me off, so to me that is the type of guy I always end up with. Sigh. Even though I try to not fall in love with them, I love being their girl. I’d be Lobo’s girl, but only if my character had the power to murder him at any second and he was aware of this, and if he had the security to leave me the fuck alone when I am busy, and I am busy a lot. A lot of people have a hard time with that one.

Percy Carey: What do you love about men who are into comics?

Dana Davidson: Men who are into comics tend to read, they are into things that are tactile, they like to touch, to feel like they are a part of something. I think that too many people these days don’t take the time to read, don’t take the time to feel, to touch (In an appropriate way). Books are a passion of mine and have always been a big part of my life. Knowledge is power, even it it’s fantasy, and can help us to further examine existence, ourselves, and others. Comic readers read, they have imagination, and understand fantasy.
Percy Carey: Who do you think would win a fight between Batman and Moon Knight?

Dana Davidson: Hmmm. Batman vs Moon Knight. Well they both have gadgets that I am sure they are good at fiddling with, seeing as how they fiddle with themselves often, but, I’d say, that in this fight they will work up a great sweat until Morpheus (from Sandman) interviens, bringing them into the dreaming world and plays with them like the little toys that they are, and have been merched into, until he is bored and passes them onto one of his less kind siblings.

Percy Carey: How can the readers get in contact with you and learn more about you?

This week on the "Comic Book Corner," Percy (a.k.a. MF Grimm) discusses comics with the Wu-Tang icon and picks the hottest new releases.

[Each Wednesday, Complex columnist Percy Carey a.k.a. MF Grimm dives into the world of comic books with industry interviews, reviews and more.]

This interview is special to me because I had the rare opportunity to interview the GZA, who’s co-founder of the multi platinum group Wu-Tang Clan and a dear friend of mine for the past 25 years. GZA and I kicked it for a while and talked about us growing up in the '80s, as well as our love for chess and mutual respect for Chess Grand Master Maurice Ashley (who’s also a friend of ours). But one other thing we have in common is our love for comics (GZA is currently working on his own book), so read on as two hip hop Grandmasters discuss comic books. M.I.C. & Wu-Tang is one family, one love. Enjoy…

Percy Carey: Some of the comics that I enjoyed growing up were Richie Rich and Archie; What about you or were you strictly into titles like DC Comics and Marvel?

GZA: Yeah, when I was younger, I remember reading Richie Rich and Archie, those were definitely some of my favorites growing up.

Percy Carey: Who was your favorite characters?

GZA: Favorite character was Archie, but I did like Jughead, because he was different. He wore a crown, and he reminded me a lot of Ralph Mouth from “Happy Days.” But gotta love the girls, Veronica and Betty.

Percy Carey: What else was it about reading comics you enjoyed outside of just the story itself?

GZA: Always used to love the ads that were run in comics. Seeing the skinny guy get buff, the sea monkeys you could send away for. Sometimes I’d read just for that stuff.

Percy Carey: What was it about about Richie Rich?

GZA: I love Richie Rich, because he was rich. You know, it was like watching the television show Diff’rent Strokes'I definitely wanted a room like that. You gotta love a kid with money, something to want, something to shoot for.

Percy Carey: Are fellow Wu-Tang Clan members like RZA and Method Man into comics as well?

GZA: Oh yeah. We used to sit around on tour buses discussing characters from Marvel, trying to remember how much people could lift, how far people could stretch their powers, and that was before they set up those power rating systems, put out those numbers. We were comparing what they wrote in the comics, and would get into arguments about what the real number was. Like how much weight Hulk could lift and stuff like that.

Percy Carey: If you could have one super power, what power would it be and why?

GZA: Telepath, to know what people were thinking. It would help me stay ten steps ahead, just like chess. Knowing what people are thinking and doing before they do it would help let me see what to do and where the world is gonna take me before it happens.

Percy Carey: I know you’re an avid chess player, because you and I discuss chess, but do you have any other passions?

GZA: Love science. Love getting into discussions about worm holes and time'that kind of stuff is fascinating to me. I’ve always loved science and math. Seeing the logic behind stuff, that’s one of the reasons I like chess so much. When I’m thinking about doing a new album, it kinda makes me think about the sciences, especially the science of breath. It’s amazing what the human body can do. You know, guys like David Blane who reset the world record for holding his breath, first he did for 7 minutes, and the record at the time was 8. That’s just crazy right there. He was living in water for like, two weeks. I mean, there’s parts of our body that don’t even get oxygen because we don’t breathe right. We can do exercises learning how to basically breathe correctly. When you sing, when you create, you have to know about breathing, because it helps with making the sounds, making the pitches. When you breathe right, you breathe into those dark places of your mind and your body, it opens up new pathways, and you feel like you can do anything.

Percy Carey: Any final thoughts about comics and the importance they hold?

GZA: Growing up, I read comics all the time. They’re great inspiration; they can show you the world is full of possibilities. Now, my son reads comics, and it’s something that we can share. It’s really a good feeling being able to share something like that with him, and now working on doing my own, it’s really cool to give back to that world.

Percy Carey: I know you recently came back from a tour in Europe. How many people were in attendance for your last show there?

GZA: Over 30,000 people who love the Wu showed up in support.

Percy Carey: Well it’s safe to say that you’ll have great sales when your comic book is in the stores, GZA, because you already have millions of fans worldwide and I’m sure John Mayo from comicbookpage.com would agree that your potential sales numbers as a comic book writer will compete with any of the biggest major comic book titles out right now. So that’s very impressive.

GZA: Thank you.

Percy Carey: How can the readers learn more about you and and also the Wu-Tang Clan?

GZA: If you want to reach me the quickest I strongly recommend you go to myspace.com/GZA It’s accessible to everyone that’s why I like it, other than that I would say www.wucorp.com for the Wu as a collective.

Percy Carey: GZA, as always, is was great building with you thank you for you time.
