Style Brand Profile: Penfield

PenfieldLEADJackets from Penfield x Staple Collaboration

BRAND: Penfield

SINCE: 1975

FOUNDED BY: Harvey Gross

HOME BASE: Hudson, MA

WHY WE CO-SIGN: If you’re like us, at some point, function becomes way more important then mere aesthetics. When we have to walk five blocks to the nearest subway in 20-degree weather, whether or not we look cool begins to matter less and less. Although your setting might be a little less urban then ours, freezing is universal. So when the temperature begins to drop, we turn to Penfield, a brand that has been keeping cats warm for nearly 35 years. Yeah, we know other brands make warm outerwear, but few get the job done with such stylish attention to detail.

Originally established in Hudson, Massachusetts 1975, Penfield has developed a tradition of protecting the masses from the elements with gear that looks great on a mountain climber or a city kid looking for something to get into on a Friday night. To make sure form matches function, Penfield has worked with other brands on special projects. This year, it has collaborated with the likes of rag & bone, Reed Space, Edifice, and Limoland. Using high-quality fabrics like water- and windproof Melton wool, along with the wisdom that comes with being in the game for 30-plus years, Penfield continues to hold us down on any frontier.

Style Buy It Now: Penfield Boxford

penfieldlead

We were big fans of shawl-collar sweaters all winter, but even as the temperature rises, you can still rock the style. Today’s Buy It Now is the Boxford shawl-collar sweatshirt from Penfield, a perfect spring layer with two lower pockets and a “cat’s-eye” button closure. Yeah, it’ll be too warm for the Boxford in about a month, but you’re gonna get a ton of wear out of this next fall, trust us.

As a bonus, for orders over $100—and this qualifies—Penfield will send you a free SIGG-style water bottle that you can use when you want to pretend like you’re “green.” Pretty girls will definitely respect your eco-G. For all three colors of the sweatshirt, Buy It Now info and details on the water-bottle offer, see below…

Style Buy It Now: Penfield Ashby Shirt

penfield_asbury_hickory1-11.jpg
A few years ago during the Jay-Z “Change Clothes” era, button-ups were the “in” piece of clothing to rock. Then R&B singers started to wear them again and they cooled down, but now it seems they may be back, sort of.

If you're doing it smart, button-ups can be a great look this season, especially when you're wearing shirts that are more durable than the usual shiny shirts that you find teeny-bopper club goers wearing. Which takes us to today's featured item, the Penfield Ashby Shirt. The trusted winter outerwear brand has long been on our radar for shiny jackets and vests, but one of our favorite pieces from their new season is this rugged striped top. It'll work with anything from jeans to khakis and will be more comfortable than most of the other dress shirts hanging in your closet. Oh, and the best part? It’s under $80, so it won’t break the bank. For Buy It Now info and more pics, see below…

Style Brand Profile: Penfield

pennfield_lead.jpg
The prospect of going back to school sucks, but at least you have the chance to get fresh in some new gear. One brand to keep in mind is Penfield, a Massachusetts based company inspired by Autumn. Since Penfield launched in 1975, it’s become the pride of New England fashion with its quality line of goose down jackets and windbreakers, especially in the wet/snowy region where it’s needed most.

But now the timeless, respected brand is making a name in the streetwear world. In 2007, their collaboration with Alife Rivington Club consisted of bold-colored jackets that harked back to ’90s style puffy coats. Penfield also crossed designer paths with Stussy and Maharishi with cool camo print graphics to match their rustic signature. See more products from Spring/Summer ‘08 and Autumn/Winter ‘08 below.
