With the special 15th anniversary commemorative BAPE book coming out this month, we caught up with Nigo for a rare interview. In our November 2008 “My Complex” column, he speaks on his love life, how he feels about Lil Wayne wearing his clothes, blogs, and the constant criticism that A Bathing Ape does Nike take-offs. Check out the five contradictions from Mr. Nagao below…

As Told To: Joe La Puma

#1: “We used to sell to something like 40 different stores in Japan… But around 1998, I decided to just cut back to our one store in Tokyo. It didn't take long until the sales from one store were as good as when we sold throughout the country. That made me realize that this was something bigger than I had imagined.”

#2: “I don't think our clothes are so expensive; we make things in a very similar system to high-fashion designers… But we are interested in casual clothes. People get our jeans, tees and sweats confused with mass-produced consumer items. We respect the spirit of what we want to do over financial considerations'that's consistent with our motto, I think.”

#3: “I sort of fell out of touch with hip-hop… But the thing that got me enthusiastic about it again in the late '90s was the South, especially Cash Money. So, Lil Wayne wearing the clothes I had made was amazing. I am very pleased if he is known for wearing Bape.”

#4: “I have a girlfriend, and we have been together for about three years. She is a well-known actress in Japan [Riho Makise], and people are aware of the relationship… But she has her own career, and I don't want to interfere in that. So, there is a conscious decision to avoid being seen together in public too often.”

#5: “I never read blogs. So, I don't even hear the criticism about us doing Nike take-offs. I'd like to say that other brands doing Bape knockoffs shows that the brand is recognized and desired… But in reality, it's really annoying to have to deal with it.”

• Whatever pointy shoes you can find
• The fake monster teeth from your 2004 Halloween costume
FINISHING TOUCHES:
Walk around singing falsetto ditties to yourself, and get your little brother to fake-videotape your every move. The hardest part is going to be convincing a smoking-hot racially-ambiguous girl to stand next to you. But hey, he did it'you can, too.

IF YOU’RE ASIAN… NIGO

INGREDIENTS:
• The Bape gear collecting dust in your closet that you can’t pawn off on Czech kids on eBay
• Aluminum foil (for your grills and fake chain)
• Fitted hat on slight tilt
• Totally blank, vacant expression
FINISHING TOUCHES:
Open your eyes as wide as possible at all times. If anybody makes eye contact with you, throw up the Star Trak sign. Do not say a word.

IF YOU’RE LATINO… MANNY RAMIREZ

INGREDIENTS:
• A white T-shirt with “Dodgers” written in blue Sharpie and “99″ in red Sharpie
• Any blue hat…you can make the “LA” with masking tape if necessary
• A baseball bat…or a large stick of some sort
• Stringy mop spray-painted black; or shred a black T-shirt and use the neck as a crown over your head beneath your LA hat
• Mouth full of Double Bubble
• Goofy, possibly sedated smile
FINISHING TOUCHES:
Swing the bat around viciously. When not swinging, smile and give the two-thumbs-up sign.

IF YOU’RE WHITE… SETH ROGEN

INGREDIENTS:
• Let’s be real: You already look like this
FINISHING TOUCHES:
Laugh nervously.

INGREDIENTS:
• A blazer with a low-cut shirt underneath
• The butchest running shoes in your closet

Aptly titled A Bathing Ape, the 368-page book takes a look back at Bape's design history, through pictures of products like G-Shocks, all over printed hoodies, and sneakers, along with the celebrities like Kanye West, Pharrell and T.I who wear them. The book will be distributed by Rizzoli International Publications and will retail for $60.00 in November. Check some preview pages after the jump.

Considering how much time we waste on Google, it would be nice to have something to look at other than a blank white screen. Recently, the company unveiled their new artist themes, which apply a variety of different looks to your personalized iGoogle homepage. Artists who contributed original skins for the project include Jeff Koons, Marc Ecko, The Beastie Boys, Os Gêmeos and A Bathing Ape’s Nigo, plus over 60 others. Starting today, art from the series will also be on display on the streets of NYC’s Meatpacking District through the weekend. The sign on the building said “Go Ape,” and that's exactly what the city of West Hollywood did last night (April 23) at the Grand Opening of A Bathing Ape’s first West Coast retail location. The Japanese streetwear store, which opens to the public tomorrow (April 25), was host to some of the biggest names in hip-hop yesterday with Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, Rick Ross and Jermaine Dupri all stopping by. But it wasn't just a night for rap, as the event was also highlighted by the appearances of Tennis star Serena Williams, actress Dania Ramirez (X-Men 3, Heroes), actor Jonah Hill, rocker Pete Wentz, soon-to-be drafted NBA player Kevin Love (UCLA) and even Iron Mike Tyson.
