Predator is one of those classic franchises that Hollywood will always find a way to make relevant again. Case in point: Predators hits theaters this July. The casting is on point, with guys like Adrien Brody, Laurence Fishburne, and Topher Grace in starring roles. The story appears to be more of the same, but we haven’t complained about that in two decades. Every flick isn’t Oscar material. This is all about mindless, explosion-filled summer fun. Way back in September, we posted a teaser trailer for the upcoming A Nightmare On Elm Street remake. Now that the movie release is only a couple months out, this less ambiguous preview is starting to make the rounds. It makes the film look a lot better too. Freddy Krueger’s new voice is still kind of annoying, but there seems to be enough of everything else that made the original great to make up for that. We won’t know how the flick turns out for sure until April 30, but interest is up for the moment.

We’re not ready to make the call yet, but M. Night Shyamalan’s streak of bad movies might be coming to an end. His next flick, The Last Airbender, is based on the popular animated series, Avatar, and drops on July 2. Being honest, the action in this trailer looks good but that’s about it. Still, even if it sucks, there are probably enough kids who watch the Nickelodeon show to give it a decent showing at the box office come summer.

From Paris With Love, based on a story by kick-ass French auteur Luc Besson and directed by Pierre Morel (check out his credentials here), is without a doubt John Travolta’s best worst movie in years. Word to your woman running her fingers through his hair, Ayo! Scott doesn’t know shit about going bald, but he imagines that it must fill a man with rage—the kind of rage that Johnny T, who’s finally accepted that hair plugs make him look like a butt plug and shaved his gigantic dome, channels into Charlie Waxman, a badass American agent in gay Paris whose white pecker tingles whenever he shoots Asians and Middle Easterners just for living. Or maybe he’s just pissed off because Jonathan Rhys Meyers, who plays his pansy partner, can’t do a fucking American accent for a whole movie without a wee bet o’ Ireland poking through. Either way, Travolta’s acting is as subtle as the bazooka Waxman carries to deal with penile insecurities, and it makes Morel’s action flick, which is more tongue in cheek than a tossed salad, a fiery hot mess. John Travolta’s crazy baldhead action-thriller From Paris With Love drops tomorrow, and while we’re pretty thoroughly turned off by the idea of JT’s old ass in a shoot ‘em up flick, we’re at least intrigued by the movie based solely off its director, veteran French filmmaker Pierre Morel.

Paris is just Morel’s third feature as a director, but his last project was the thoroughly awesome Taken, and he’s about to blow up big time, with no fewer than five projects in the works, including the sure-to-be-hyped-beyond-belief Dune, scheduled for a 2012 release. We took a minute to look back at Morel’s resume, and it should be encouraging for all you struggling filmmakers out there: in ten years, dude has gone from credits like “Steadycam Operator” to directing big budget action extravaganzas. Keep at it folks…

THE TRANSPORTER, 2002
ROLE: Cinematographer
• Morel had worked for a decade in France as a cameraman and cinematographer for various small projects when he made his feature length debut as a cinematographer in the Jason Statham-starring, Luc Besson-written/produced Transporter. The perfectly-executed chase sequence in this opening scene makes subtitles superfluous.

23 years ago, the world was introduced to Gordon Gekko and his unique brand of corporate greed. This April, Michael Douglas reprises his Oscar-winning role alongside Shia LeBeouf, who plays a young trader. Oliver Stone is still on board too, guiding the modern direction of his aged franchise. The time lapse doesn’t appear to be an issue though. Money Never Sleeps is right. Hopefully this team doesn’t either and they put together a story as engaging as the original. We’ll see in a few months.

Mel Gibson will have his revenge, and not just on Jews for killing Jesus. The anti-Semitic Aussie makes a triumphant return to payback films in his new thriller, Edge of Darkness, playing a Boston homicide detective whose daughter is gunned down in what appears to be an attempt on his life. When he discovers that she had a secret life and that corporate and government agents may have assassinated her to cover up more dirty deeds, he starts putting bullets in motherfuckers. It helps with the grieving process.

Crime and punishment flicks have always been Gibson’s best (besides What Women Want, of course). In honor of his return to the genre, and so as to not piss him off, Complex revisits his history of heart-stopping revenge flicks.

MAD MAX (1979)
How Mel Is Wronged: In dystopic future Australia, a motorcycle gang led by a madman runs over police officer Max Rockatansky’s wife and son, crushing them to death.
Mel’s Revenge Highlight: In an unforgettable scene, Max handcuffs a gang member to a gas-leaking car that he sets to explode and leaves him with a hacksaw so he can try to free himself by cutting through his ankle. When it comes to retribution, this method is a cut above.

Most of us would go to space if we had the chance, but it’s doubtful that we’ll ever get the opportunity. Going off early buzz, it seems like this upcoming Hubble 3D flick might be the next best thing. Filmed in collaboration with NASA, the Leonardo DiCaprio-narrated space journey is said to have 3D imagery that puts Avatar to shame. Those claims alone will generate interest. Catch us in an IMAX theater somewhere when Hubbledrops on March 19.

• Fenton is Scrooge McDuck’s accountant in the animated series DuckTales, who becomes GizmoDuck when he stumbles upon a robot suit that happens to be activated when he utters his own catch-oath “blathering blatherskite.” GizmoDuck does double duty as McDuck’s bodyguard, which is really a shame, ’cause if we had duck superpowers we’d off that rich little mallard and dive into his pool of gold coins our own damn selves.

• The lovable but slightly heavy academic Sherman Klump develops a formula that turns him into the svelte, Dave Chappelle-destroying Buddy Love. Alas, Buddy turns out to be certifiably crazy, turning off the very woman Sherman hopes to attract.

• Luckless bank clerk Stanley Ipkiss becomes crime-fighting, wise-cracking superhero “The Mask” after donning a pair of socks wooden mask he discovers at the city’s harbor. Not to be confused with Jason Voorhees who would probably stab people up even without his mask.

• The pleasantly cheerful Butters got kicked out of SP’s Gang of Four, only to seek a measure of revenge as the (you guessed it) chaos-seeking supervillain Professor Chaos. Sadly, Chaos has yet to exact retribution against Butters’ primary nemesis, Cartman.

#5. Andy Kaufman & Tony Clifton
• The legendary comedian Andy Kaufman created Tony Clifton as his audience-bashing lounge singer alter ego, who was famously kicked off the set of the TV show Taxi (on which Kaufman starred) for showing up drunk to the set. Occasionally played by Kaufman’s brother as well as fellow comedian Bob Zmuda, Clifton was the obnoxious yin to Kaufman’s own awkward yang.

#4. Fight Club: narrator & Tyler Durden
• The unnamed narrator in Fight Club leads an emotionally vacant life until he meets soap salesmen Tyler Durden. The pair form Project Mayhem, a fight club dedicated to channeling aggression and anti-capitalism, but Durden soon takes over and moves the group in evermore dangerous directions. Of course it turns out that (MAJOR FUCKING SPOILER ALERT) Durden and the narrator are the same person. Confused? It’s a metaphor for our times! Or, better yet, it’s a blueprint for kids that want to blow up Starbucks (now that’s a role for Michael Cera!)!

• In the classic nerd fantasy, Urkel downs a magic potion that turns him into his suave alter ego Stefan Urquelle. Laura, the apple of ol’ Steve’s eye, is at first taken with the smooth-talking Stefan, only to wish for the return of dorky-ass Steve. Funny, nobody ever pines for the old us after we’ve been sipping the magic potion.

• Yes, pops used to make us shave his gerbils when he drank too many Schaefers and got in one of his “dark” moods, but he had nothing on Luke Skywalker’s old man. Once a promising Jedi, Anakin Skywalker turned to the dark side, developed respiratory problems, and did a whole host of evil shit, only to have the spell broken when he needed to save his son’s life. By the time he died AK was a pretty nasty looking old man, but we might make the alter ego plunge to the dark side ourselves (pause) if it meant having the ability to choke people out just by thinking about it.

• Sugar is a helluva drug, just ask Beavis. After partaking of too much of the hard white, the Beav becomes inhabited by Cornholio, a t-shirt neck-stretching toilet paper fiend from Lake Titicaca. Yet another benefit of a good alter ego: they’re great ways to pursue those hobbies (bungholes, etc.) that you may be too embarrassed to take up in your “straight” life.

When you think of Robin Hood, you probably picture campy comedy and minimal action, but that was your dad’s Robin. Ridley Scott, the man behind classics such as Gladiator and American Gangster, is giving the famous story his own twist with the 2010 version of Robin Hood. It must be National Infidelity Week, ’cause everywhere we look marriage vows are being betrayed (especially when we look down). There are plenty of movies about remarkable success stories, but Greenberg is looking to shine some light on the slacker when it hits theaters in March of next year. Ben Stiller plays a 40-year old who wants to “do nothing” for a while, which leads to some serious, middle-age self-discovery. The premise is perfectly capable of being cheesy, but it’s clear that the people behind this film will handle it the right way. Director Noah Baumbach has never disappointed us, Stiller looks like he’s in top form, and James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem is holding down the soundtrack. Count on this being a must-see by the time Spring rolls around.

We’ve always repped for Quentin Tarantino (and his women) and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise in the past, so it was a pleasant surprise to run across this unique viral video that’s making its rounds on the web right now. Imagine if the worlds of Reservoir Dogs and TMNT were combined and this mash-up is what you get. Seems a bit odd, but trust us, if you like either in the least you’ll find this entertaining.

Is it a full moon that’s driving young girls crazy? Nah, just a Twilight: New Moon. The new vamps and werewolves flick is making fans hormonally insane, just like the original Twilight film did in 2008. Over the last few years, the franchise’s star Robert Pattinson has gotten it the worst, dodging a mini-riot at an autograph session and taxis on the streets of NYC while running from his crazed fans. His co-stars Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart have caught their share of craziness too: last week in Brazil, 2,000 fans stormed their hotel and tried to rush their rooms before they were ultimately subdued by riot police.

It’s all proof that teenage girls are too imbalanced to be right in the head. It’s not like this should be news to any of us, either. This shit has been going on longer than Kotex has been easing girls’ transition into womanhood. Check out some of the crazier ways fans have showed their appreciation for the stars they love…

FRENZY: A free, radio-station-sponsored concert at the Brookdale Center Mall turned ugly when fans, outnumbering security 2,000 to 10, climbed onto stage and tackled Diddy’s boy band. Four people were taken to hospitals and five more had minor injuries treated at the mall. We can only imagine how many mall employees’ ears were hurt by B5.

FRENZY: Capitalizing on Frankie Blue Eyes’ popularity, the 3,500-person capacity Paramount Theater booked him for several back-to-back shows. When the shrieking chicks in the first show refused to leave, the 30,000-plus shrieking chicks outside went ape shit, sparking “The Columbus Day Riot.” Police had to be called in, but that wasn’t the end of the fuckery. Some of Sinatra’s obsessed fans reportedly sat through dozens of his performances consecutively without food and fainted while others had to be dragged out of the venue by ushers.

FRENZY: While the group’s No Strings Attached LP was bending the Backstreet Boys over, JT and the crew made an appearance at MTV’s Total Request Live. It was normal to have a crowd outside the building during a taping, but so many devotees showed up for ‘N Sync that they shut down Times Square. The terrorists win again.

FRENZY: The Beatles’ first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show is considered the start of the British Invasion of the U.S., but the assault was all American. Throughout the three shows, hysterical young women screamed and cried, making it difficult to even hear the band. During the taping of the second of their three shows, a throng of fans prevented the band from getting on stage until police wedged them apart. Hence the mania in Beatlemania.

FRENZY: Once, at a premiere, a barrier broke and his fans rushed the star and grabbed him up, pulling him in every direction. Security was able to break him free and calm the situation, but when Efron got home and took off his shirt he discovered that a fingernail was stuck in his back. Kinky. (Note: This may be why he’s letting his wax figure make appearances for him now.)

It’s no secret around here that the past 10 years have passed us by. While we’ve been obsessed with recollecting the best moments of the 2000s, it doesn’t hurt to take a look back at the craziness that was the final year of the ’90s.

Thinking about 1999, it seems like the cult classic, Fight Club, was just as culturally relevant as events like the Y2K scare or introduction of Eminem. That’s why special midnight screenings are being held in New York and Los Angeles on November 18 (Tuesday night, but technically Wednesday morning) to celebrate the film’s 10th anniversary. RSVP information is behind the link on each city. If you can’t make it or don’t live on the coasts, cop it on Blu-ray next Tuesday.

Comedy stars Tina Fey and Steve Carell were already close in a sense with 30 Rock and The Office running back-to-back on Thursday nights on NBC, and now they’re both at the helm of full-length feature film, Date Night. It doesn’t look groundbreaking, but there’s no way these two will get together without producing a good amount of solid laughs. The wacky premise of a couple on-the-run due to mistaken identity plus the overload of A-list cameos (Mila Kunis, Leighton Meester, Mark Wahlberg, James Franco, Mark Ruffalo, Kristen Wiig, Ray Liotta, Olivia Munn, etc) almost guarantee hit status for the flick. We’ll know for sure when it hits theaters in April.
