Movies Crash Course: 10 Things You Need To Know About Spike Jonze

spike
It’s hard to remember our childhood without reminiscing about the mischievous monsters of Maurice Sendak’s Where The Wild Things Are that lived in our dreams. The figments of our animated imagination finally come to life with director Spike Jonze’s highly-anticipated film adaption of the your favorite bedtime story. With the film opening this weekend, put the baby mama drama aside and your boss’ bitching outta your head, and sail into the land of the Wild Things, just like you always used to.

If there’s one person who never left that mysterious land, it’s Spike Jonze. His expansive career has been built on boyish fantasies of skateboards, bikes, explosions, and pranks. Hell, even his name is make-believe (his birth name was Adam Spiegel). With that said, we think it’s time we take a peek into Jonze’s coloring book and check out the most iconic/interesting of the works that have kept him 39 going on 13…

Kicks of the Day Lakai Telford (Grey Nubuck)

telford-gray-nubuck
If you’ve followed Complex for the last few years, you know we’re big fans of the Telford. First it was the Newports (that may or may not appear on a certain list we have coming up) then it was the all-blue colorup, then the stars, and well, you get the idea. For fall, the skate brand took its best model and dressed it in all grey nubuck. It’s a step up, and if you’re skating in them, you better be prepared to shred the shit outta the uppers. We’ll wear with jeans. No, posers.

Kicks of the Day Lakai Manchester Select

lakai-manchester
If you thought Lakai’s only solid silhouette was the Telford, consider yourself out of the loop. For its summer line, the skate brand brought back the Manchester Selects in pop-y colors that make sense for warm weather. If you’re not into these blue suede shoes, check for the turquoise or red colorups that will help you standout at the bbq this weekend. Available now, for a measly $46 a pair. Steal.

Sneakers A History of Eric Koston’s Signature Shoes

kostonlead
In HOLY CRAP news, Eric Koston announced his new footwear sponsor yesterday, Nike SB. Koston has been a skate hero forever, and with the way the Berrics is popping off right now, this couldn’t have been a better get for SB. Koston has always been a Nike head, but he’s also been a trend leader in skate shoe design since his start.

In an interview with Retrokid for SOLE Collector back in April of ’08, when he was asked about P-Rod’s deal with Nike, Koston said, “I think they ripped him off…I think a company like Nike, they should be paying out the fucking ass…Somebody of Paul’s ability and marketability, he deserves more. LeBron’s getting a $100 million deal, it’s just not comparable.” If one were to extrapolate off of this quote, he could safely say that Eric Koston is chilling. So, in celebration of one of skateboarding’s greats, and to mark what will undoubtedly be the start of a flood of awesome SBs with his name on it, we’ve compiled Eric Koston’s greatest signature shoes from his start with éS to his move to Lakai. Hit the jump and get schooled about the dude, and his design process.

Kicks of the Day Lakai Belmont

lakai-belmont-lead
Ever since Vans killed the low-top summer shoe game with the Era’s and the Authentic’s skate brands have been trying to play catch up with styles of their own. We think Lakai may have caught one with its Belmont sneaker, a low profile sneaker that’s hooked up with a suede upper and vulcanized sole. Lakai also points out that the sneaker features a full-length shock absorbing insole, just in case you want to go nuts and try to skate in them. We’ll just use them for walking. Check for them in Lakai retailers around the country in the next few weeks.

Kicks of the Day Lakai Telford (Black Leather)

lakai-telford
When it comes to the Telford, we’ve seen all red, all blue, all stripes, and now… once again, all black. Lakai just updated its site with their spring/summer lineup and we’re psyched about this wrinkled-leather banger. Besides the new batch of Telfords be sure to check out the limited edition series sneakers they’re cookin’ up. Look for all the sneakers to deliver next month.

Kicks of the Day Lakai Telford Grey Suede

lakai-telford-grey.jpg
As sneaker analogies go The Dunk: Nike:: The Telford :Lakai. For Spring, the Cali-based skate brand is dropping two new colorways of the high-top, with this cool grey suede/forest green scheme being the standout. These Telfs are already available, so if you're feeling them, head over to Eastbay (?!) to cop.

Still holding out on the Telfords? Get with it. The latest colorway of everyone's favorite Lakai silo turns down the flash with this tough black and blue scheme. Some stores like BK-based KCDC are stocking them but if you're looking to cop online, scoop them up here with little hassle.

Kicks of the Day Lakai Belmont Mid

belmont_mid-blk.jpg
Lakai's introducing this Belmont Mid as an option for skaters who are forced to clean up when meathead bouncers are giving them shit over dress codes.

Sure they're not as classy as some pricy Desert boots, but this leather so soft make up makes for a good “my-first-sneaker-shoe.” Check for them at Lakai retailers this October.
