PHIGHTING!!!!

When Yong Eun Yang stunned the world by beating Tiger Woods for the PGA Championship yesterday, he became the first Korean (and full-blooded Asian) to win a major golf tournament. That thumping sound you hear? It’s 48,000,000 South Koreans beating their collective chests today in pride of their countryman’s achievement. (Take that, Japan!) Koreans been had math and science on lock but nothing makes a nation feel prouder than <strike>sticking it to Whitey</strike> excellence in sports. And—as with Korean entertainers—there’s no better place to make a name than on the biggest stage of all: the U.S. of fucking A.

To that end, and in honor of Yang, we’re celebrating the greatest Korean athletes in U.S. sports. Grab a plate of ddukboki, light up a cigarette, and enjoy! Pilsung Korea!

COUNTRY: Korea

GENRE: (Violent) drama

SCREENING: Thursday, July 2 at 2 p.m. at the IFC Center, NYC as part of the New York Asian Film Festival

FUN FACT: Lead actor Yang Ik-June wrote, produced, and directed this independent movie, which has racked up awards at several international film festivals.

WHY COMPLEX IS CO-SIGNING IT: We’re all for consuming media via BitTorrent, Hulu, and YouTube, but nothing beats getting your mind blown by a powerful movie on the big-screen. Last week, we were lucky enough to attend the NY premiere of the Korean film Ddongpari (literally translated: “Shit-Fly”; American title: Breathless)—and honestly, we haven’t stopped thinking about it since. The movie follows the exploits of a debt-collector/thug named Sang-hoon whose first, second, and last resort is violence. After Sang-hoon crosses paths (violently) with an equally pugnacious high-school girl, the odd couple form a strange bond that provides glimmers of light in the dark chaos of their respective lives. Along the way, we learn how Sang-hoon’s past has marred his present and future…

Your knowledge of Korean cinema might begin and end with Oldboy, but where Park Chan-wook’s masterpiece is all stylized, brutal violence, Breathless is simply…brutal. At times, it’s painful to watch. (The English title refers to how Sang-hoon’s merciless ass-whupping rages—and believe us, there are a lot of them—leave him literally breathless.) The film offers an eye-opening look at the underbelly of Seoul and poignantly illustrates the vicious, karmic cycle of abuse. (It also presents a veritable buffet of Korean curse words; you’ll be mumbling “shee-bal” for days afterward.) Not since seeing La Haine (1995) have we been so thoroughly knocked on our ass by a movie-theater experience. If you can’t make tomorrow’s afternoon screening, then keep an eye out for the import DVD. You won’t regret it.

Our favorite South Korean nine-girl pop super-group (that’s SNSD, suckas!) just dropped a video for the debut single from its second “mini”-album, which comes out this week. The new song, though not quite as catchy as “Gee,” is still pretty damn good, even if “genie” imagery in pop music feels a little Xtina circa ‘99. We’re not really feeling the new looks of Yoona or Sooyoung, but Taeyeon and Tiffany are looking better than ever and Yuri is forever a dimepiece. We probably shouldn’t print what we’d really wish to do with these girls if we had the chance…

BONUS VIDEO: After the jump, check out the video for The Wonder Girls‘ just-released English version of “Nobody”…and if you haven’t yet, vote on the hottest WG member!
Korea’s illest director Park Chan-Wook—the man responsible for the insanity that was 2003’s Oldboy—is about to drop another gem on us in the form of Thirst, his twisted take on the vampire genre. And no, this isn’t some teen-girl-wet-dream-Twilight bullshit—the movie debuted at Cannes, where it won the Jury Prize. Thirst hits U.S. theaters on July 31, and IGN debuted the American trailer (restricted!) last night. Finish up that Bloody Mary before you watch.

We consider ourselves somewhat of experts on Korea over here, so it was only a matter of time before we hit up the ol’ Hanguk for an edition of Worldwide Wednesday. With Kim Jong-Il testing nukes and kidnapping journalists, we figured the time was right for a little Korean love. South Korean, that is. Hey, close enough, right?

Given that plastic surgery is like a national pastime in Korea, we were sure to include at least some women who are (at least we think) all-natural. Whatever the case, we’re quite sure we’ve put together an unassailable list of the the 9 hottest women of (South) Korea. Daehan Minguk!

We had our doubts, but this Korean starlet won us over when she stopped by the office to answer our probing questionnaire.

First impressions definitely go a long way. A few months ago, we featured pop star BoA in our post about Korean entertainers attempting to break the U.S. market; back then, we were highly doubtful about BoA’s chances of becoming an American star. But that was before we met the 22-year-old singer. When BoA recently stopped by Complex HQ to greet us face-to-face, our skepticism was softened by her affable personality and palpable drive to succeed. (And oh yeah, we confess—maybe it was just her effortless beauty that did the trick.)

BoA (a.k.a Beat of Angel) is no stranger to breaking ground in a foreign country. Since debuting in Korea at age 13, she has released successful albums in both her homeland and Japan while garnering fame all across the Asian continent. On March 17, BoA went stateside with her self-titled English debut, featuring production from Sean Garrett (“Run It,” Chris Brown; “Yeah!,” Usher) and Bloodshy & Avant (“Toxic,” Britney Spears). Tomorrow, BoA is scheduled to perform in Tokyo alongside Katy Perry and the Black Eyed Peas for the MTV Video Music Awards Japan. To mark the occasion, we present our Complex 7 with the singer, in which she discusses (in excellent English) her sneaker fetish and love for Eminem. Check out her responses and watch her new video below…

Interview by Jaeki Cho

#1: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE RAP ALBUM?

BoA says: I love Eminem and I’m happy that he came out again. I just heard “Crack A Bottle.” I really liked it. That’s probably my favorite song these days. As far as my favorite rap album? I guess for now I’ll say T.I.’s Paper Trail.

#2: WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER ONE DEAL-BREAKER FOR A POTENTIAL BOYFRIEND?

BoA says: The way he speaks is very important. Some guys speak too fast, too low, or too high. I don’t like guys that exaggerate about their work. But I don’t always react to them, since I have many relationships with guys through business. Right now, I’m always traveling, so it’s really hard to share time with anybody.

#3: WHAT TYPE OF FOOTWEAR WOULD MAKE YOU COMPLETELY DISMISS A MAN AS A POTENTIAL HOOKUP?

BoA says: I like guys wearing sneakers, but I don’t like guys putting their pants inside their shoes or sneakers. I do it a lot, but I don’t like it when guys do it. And I don’t like guys wearing flip-flops. In the beach is all right, but in normal occasions, I just think it seems a little too casual. I personally like sneakers a lot. I was at Flight Club earlier today to get the Jeremy Scott For Adidas (JS Wings), but they didn’t have my size! I love Pierre Hardy sneakers that are made for women. I love Converse. I couldn’t get the Louis Vuitton x Steven Sprouse, it got sold out so quickly. I used to like high heels because I’m short. But few years ago, after a rehearsal, I woke up the next morning and saw the bottom of my feet bloated. It looked like a hamburger! [Laughs.] After that I always wore sneakers or low flat shoes.

#4: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE COMFORT FOOD OR HANGOVER REMEDY?

BoA says: I just sleep in or go work out. I can’t drink that much. I can’t drink ssoju [Korean rice liquor]. It’s too strong.

#5: WHAT’S THE MOST EFFECTIVE APHRODISIAC FOR YOU?

BoA says: I don’t know…maybe coffee? [Laughs.] I like McDonald’s coffee with hazelnut syrup.

#6: WHO’S A CHILDHOOD CRUSH YOU CAN’T BELIEVE YOU HAD?

BoA says: Why do you think girls are always attracted to their teachers when they’re younger? I was attracted to my teacher at one point. I thought, “Oh, he’s so nice. I want to be his wife one day.” [Laughs.] I guess it’s a cute memory. As far as a celebrity crush? I really liked Seo Taiji [Korean singer-songwriter]. Unfortunately, I never got to meet him in real life yet.

#7: WHO’S YOUR WOMAN CRUSH?

BoA says: I don’t kiss girls! But yeah, I love Angelina Jolie. Oh my God, when I saw Mr. & Mrs. Smith, the way she fixed the curtains by standing on that chair…I want to try that. Oh, and I like Blake Lively from Gossip Girl.

A bunch of Asian celebs are taking a shot at success in America. Do they have what it takes? Check out our analysis.

Korean pop starlet BoA is just lookin’ for a lil’ American love…

As prideful as Koreans are about their own country, they—like most non-European peoples—look to America as the ultimate barometer of pop-culture success. They might not fuck with U.S. cars, clothes or beef, but Koreans do respect the American entertainment industry. So, having already conquered China, Japan and SE Asia, Korean entertainers are now attempting to break the U.S. market. Starting with Rain’s role in last year’s Speed Racer and continuing on with the singer BoA’s U.S. debut this month, the Korean invasion of America has begun.

The actress Kim Yun-jin of Lost was probably the first Korean native star to make a cultural impact in the U.S., but she’s a small part of a huge ensemble cast. The rest of these cross-continent hopefuls are feeling the true Korean immigrant experience: They leave home with everything and arrive here with nothing, working their way up from the bottom. It’s assimilate or die. But will they succeed? We’ve assessed the chances of five Korean entertainers who aspire to become U.S. stars…

NAME: BoA, singer

CROSSOVER POTENTIAL:

WHY SHE WILL: The 22-year-old singer, a Korean star since age 13, has the “exotic” looks and dance moves that could attract the Britney Spears crowd (i.e., young girls, gay dudes and dirty old men). Her self-titled English-language debut just landed at 142 on Billboard. Hey, at least she sold more than Capone-N-Noreaga!
WHY SHE WON’T: The album’s bland dance-electro-pop might work under a strobelite in a Long Island club, but on its own? Not so much. Plus, BoA’s pained Engrish makes lines like “I could eat you up alive” sound silly, not sexy.

The two countries facing off in tonight's World Baseball Classic final have a historical rivalry that goes way deeper than sports. Do the knowledge.

Our hopes have been answered: The U.S. is out of the World Baseball Classic, leaving us with tonight’s all-East-Asia final pitting Korea and Japan. That may not sound exciting, until you appreciate the shared history of the neighboring rivals. Think of Korea vs. Japan as sort of like the Red Sox vs. the Yankees, if New York brutally raped and pillaged Boston over a hundred times throughout history, terrorized generations of Bostonians over multiple decades and forced them to change their names, lose their cultural identity and speak only with a New York accent. Yeah, something like that.

To paraphrase J.M. Coetzee paraphrasing Rene Girard: The fewer the differences between two parties, the more bitter their mutual hatred. Korea and Japan are right next to each other and share similar bloodlines, cultures and economies, yet an extremely bitter tension still exists between the two countries. Why? Check out our breakdown of the Korea-Japan beef through history below…

1592-1598: Toyotomi Hideyoshi led one of the first recorded Japanese invasions of Korea as part of the Seven Year War. The Japanese decimated the peninsula and kidnapped thousands of Korean artisans and brought them home'along with the ears and noses of troublemakers. The Mimizuka monument, which translates to “Ear Mound,” still stands today in Kyoto. That shit just don’t sound right!

1910-1945: Japan’s 35-year annexation of Korea included the familiar imperialist atrocities, but perhaps none worse than the “comfort women” forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese military. Actual numbers vary, depending on where you’re from (Korea says 200,000+; Japan says 20,000), but there’s no disputing that the majority of comfort women were Korean. The debate continues today, with a recent uproar over Japanese historical textbooks denying the existence of comfort women, which is about as believable as Rawse’s denials about being a C.O.

2001-2006: Former Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi created a stir with his annual visits to the Yasukuni Shrine, which honors soldiers'and convicted war criminals'who died fighting for Imperial Japan. These public visits angered Japan’s neighbors, adding to widespread anti-Japan sentiment. Imagine the Chancellor of Germany paying homage to old Nazi leaders and you might get a sense of the outrage in East Asia.

2005-Present: South Korea currently occupies Dokdo, a group of islets between Korea and Japan that Japan claims is part of its territory. The two countries have long bickered over the area, with tensions rising in recent years with multiple protests and diplomatic sneak disses by each country. Should the two nations rap battle for it?

2009: The Japanese were none too pleased when Korea planted a flag in the pitcher’s mound after beating them last week. Who will get the last laugh? That’s why we’ll be watching tonight.

Our recent feature on SNSD, Korea’s nine-girl pop group, drew a lot of attention from closet K-pop devotees and perplexed Korean news sites. But it wasn’t long before the streets started asking: How are we gonna cover SNSD and leave out the Wonder Girls? That’s like covering Nas but ignoring Jay-Z. Well, a message to the streets'we’ve heard your call.

And the timing couldn’t be better. The Wonder Girls are currently on an American tour, with a concert tomorrow night in L.A. and another on Sunday in NYC. Rumor has it that the group’s mini-tour is the prelude to a stronger push into the U.S. market.
Straight from Japan comes two fresh windbreakers—one trendy, one conservative. Take your pick here.

(Left) Two-Tone Hooded Raglan Jacket; (Right) Asymmetric Zip Hooded Jacket

If you’re snowed in on the East Coast today, you should have ample time for some serious online shopping. Really, what else are you gonna do? Watch The Bold and the Beautiful? Go sledding? Shovel your sidewalk? C’mon, spend some money, friends. It’ll make you feel better.

We suggest looking into one of these fresh Japanese outerwear pieces from trusted Asian streetwear site YesStyle.com. The Two-Tone Hooded Raglan Jacket is a 100% nylon windbreaker that’s kind of like a Windrunner with some added intricate detailing (those crafty Japanese!). For more conservative types, the Asymmetric Zip Hooded Jacket is a nylon/cotton blend in a classic anorak style; blue and yellow is a can’t miss for spring. For detail pics, additional colorways and Buy It Now info, see below…

Girls Generation is kinda like the cute female Wu-Tang. Get to know all nine chicks behind South Korea's latest big pop hit.

The hottest pop song in Korea right now is from the girl-group version of Wu-Tang. Yep, there are nine'count ‘em'nine members of Girls’ Generation (a.k.a. SNSD), whose just-released single and video “Gee” (click through to watch it) is about as stupidly addictive as Asian pop can get. Which means to say: stupidly, stupidly addictive.

Though SNSD may appear to consist of faceless Korean fembots, there really are nine distinct people in the group. We previously featured SNSD in our round-up of Korean girl groups, but this time we’re taking a close-up look at each member.

So Variety is reporting that Steven Spielberg and Will Smith are in talks to remake South Korean film Oldboy, a.k.a. the greatest mind-fuck movie ever. We’ve already shown you how Korea’s fast becoming the new Japan for cars, girls and tech, so it should be no surprise that Hollywood’s pilfering ideas from the Land of the Morning Calm.

The rumored Oldboy project won’t be the first (or last) time that a Korean flick has gotten the ol’ Hollywood whitewash. Luckily for you, we at Complex are certified Korean cinema experts. Here’s a look at American remakes of Korean movies from the past, present and future.

Korean Movie: Yeopgijeogin Geunyeo (2001) (a.k.a. “My Sassy Girl”),
dir. Kwak Jae-young
Plot: A hapless college student falls in love with a pretty psycho-bitch with a traumatic past.
Remake: My Sassy Girl (2008), dir. Yann Samuell
Starring: Jesse Bradford and Elisha Cuthbert
Verdict: The O.G. broke South Korean box office records; the American adaptation was a straight-to-DVD brick, apparently because U.S. audiences couldn’t buy the concept of a loser emasculating himself to win a girl’s heart. Maybe they should’ve kept the female lead as Korean?

Korean Movie: Siworae (2000) (a.k.a. “Il Mare”), dir. Lee Hyun-seung
Plot: Two would-be lovers communicate through a magical mailbox.
Remake: The Lake House (2006), dir. Alejandro Agresti
Starring: Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock
Verdict: Koreans are experts at melodrama and the carbon-copy U.S. remake is no more cheesy or manipulative than the O.G. Still, replacing sexy “Sassy Girl” starlet Jeon Ji-hyun with Sandra Bullock definitely kills the mood.

Korean Movie: Janghwa, Hongryeon (2003) (a.k.a. “A Tale of Two Sisters”),
dir. Kim Ji-woon
Plot: Two sisters rebel against their wicked stepmother in this ghost story.
Remake: The Uninvited (out 1/30/2009), dir. Charles and Thomas Guard
Starring: Emily Browning, Arielle Kebbel and Elizabeth Banks
Verdict: The trailer for the remake features none of the O.G.’s atmospheric horror and creepiness, instead looking like a straightforward scarefest. Boo.

Korean Movie: J.S.A: Joint Security Area (2000), dir. Park Chan-wook
Plot: When a South Korean patrol guard kills two North Korean soldiers in the DMZ, an international official is sent in to investigate.
Remake: Joint Security America (no release date), dir. David Franzoni
Starring: May we suggest: Gael Garcia Bernal, Tom Hanks and Natalie Portman
Verdict: The remake, which plans to substitute the U.S.-Mexico border for the DMZ zone, actually sounds like a pretty cool idea. But the fact that the script has been on ice for so long is not a good sign. The O.G., which is Oldboy director Park’s first major film, is definitely worth Netflixing.

Months before its U.S. arrival, this highly anticipated performance coupe just dropped in the company's motherland. Watch the new commercial.

Ever since Hyundai unveiled their upcoming Genesis Coupe at the 2008 New York Auto Show by having two stunt drivers do a bunch of burnouts, we’ve been patiently waiting for them to hit US press fleets so we can thrash ‘em around. And while that day is still months and months away, Hyundai officially launched the Coupe in their homeland of Korea today and dropped a new commercial to whet our stateside appetites.

If you didn’t know, the Genesis Coupe is Hyundai’s answer to all the luxury performance coupes. As Hyundai’s most performance minded vehicle ever, the rear wheel drive coupe will roll off the lot with either the all-aluminum 310 horsepower 3.8-liter V6 Lambda RS engine or, if you’re trying to save at the pump, a 210 horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged engine'both of which should offer a real nice (and cheaper) alternative over the 330hp Infiniti G37 or the 300hp BMW 335i. Be sure to check for a Genesis Coupe review as soon as they hit the states this spring. But for now, check out some photos and the new commercial below…

Bored by the Pussycat Dolls? Watch videos from the sexiest Seoul sisters on the K-pop scene.

Long live the Korean pop scene, where nobody really cares that much about authenticity'or even singing talent for that matter'as long as the girls look cute and the songs are catchy.

American girl groups like Danity Kane and the Pussycat Dolls have to throw on their sluttiest getup to grab anybody's attention, but in Korea, girl pop stars can find success by just singing mindless ditties in sugary voices while executing the simplest of non-sexual dance steps. See, that's the thing'the more you sell a product as overtly sexy, the less sexy it becomes. But push a product as “cute” and “innocent” and “pure”'well now you've piqued our predatory instincts! Our fam in Seoul hipped us to the hottest K-pop girl groups of the moment. Watch all their videos below.

Group: Wonder Girls
Debut: 2007
The most popular girl group out today, the Wonder Girls are the brainchild of K-pop Svengali Park Jin-Young, who also discovered heartthrob (and Stephen Colbert nemesis) Rain. The Girls' much-anticipated second album is coming soon, complete with a “sexier” look. Since two of the five are under 18, hopefully it won’t be too soon.
Watch “So Hot”:

Group: Jewelry
Debut: 2001
Call 'em the Korean Destiny's Child'Jewelry is known for replacing (and re-replacing) members for various reasons. Still, O.G. member Seo In-Young remains the Beyoncé of the bunch. Jewelry is responsible for the “ET Dance” craze that swept the nation earlier this year.
Watch “One More Time”:

Group: Brown Eyed Girls
Debut: 2006
The BEGs are another four-girl group with a recent hit record (”L.O.V.E.”) and a cringe-inducing rapper (Miryo). The video below is for their new single. But wait, don't all girls in Korea have (naturally) brown eyes? What's next, Black Haired Boys?
Watch “Love Action”:

Group: Girls Generation
Debut: 2007
Formed by famed talent agency SM Entertainment, this nine-member group was put together somewhat like one of Diddy's Making The Band experiments. Likewise, the group has faced some skepticism from fans, but fuck it, they're still cute.
Watch “SNSD”:

Group: The Grace
Debut: 2005
Also created by SM Entertainment, this quartet is actually bigger in Japan than Korea. Unlike some of their peers, they can actually sing. The video below is of their first hit single, which was flagged by the government for having suggestive lyrics. Word?
Watch “One More Time, OK?”:

There is no classification for this species of fashionista (R.I.P. Steve Irwin). Vintage pieces like this cheetah print button-up boldly goes where even Lafayette St. hipsters hesitate to go'but it works. As for the gold bow tie, this week’s Street Detail subject had this to say, “I personally like to stand out a little bit. I like other people telling me, 'his style is nice.'” See the rest of the wild get-up after the jump.

Samsung's newly-released Anycall Haptic has 22 kinds of vibrations built in.

From the LG Prada to the HTC Touch, fancy touch screen-based cells have been trying to rain on Apple’s iPhone parade since it dropped last year. Today, Samsung released the Anycall Haptic, a thinner iPhone competitor, to their South Korean market. The twist? It has 22 kinds of vibrations built in, which allows the phone to simulate the feel of various actions. For example, when you change the volume, it releases a sound and vibration that mimics an old school radio. No plans to release this phone in the U.S. market have been announced yet, but it’s retailing in Korea for around $700-$800.

Watch the commercial for the Haptic (featuring Korean actress Jun Ji-hyun) after the jump…
