Complex’s August/September Style & Design Issue is burning up newsstands this week with a bunch of pretty ladies and awesomeness in the world of—yup, you guessed it—Style and Design. Brian Donnelly, A.K.A. KAWS, collaborated with N.E.R.D. on Complex’s 2008 Style & Design cover story, so this time around we decided to profile the artist in our regular interview series “The Shotcaller.” Donnelly has had a breakout year, with gallery shows in NY and L.A., artwork on Kanye’s 808’s & Heartbreak, and a recent collabo with Japanese illustrator Hajime Sorayama.

PREVIEW: KAWS x Hajime Sorayama NO FUTURE COMPANION

This coming Saturday, June 27th, the New York artist KAWS will release NO FUTURE COMPANION, a collaboration figure with Japanese illustrator Hajime Sorayama which was produced by Medicom Toy/Original Fake. The figure comes at the end of a three year process that started with Sorayama’s painted interpretation of KAWS’ iconic Companion figure in 2006. From there, KAWS and Medicom set forth with turning the image into a fully pose-able metal figure that comes on a removable stand. Here it is! The official single from Clipse’s upcoming third album Till The Casket Drops, brought to you exclusively by Complex.com. Fans of Pusha and Malice’s previous releases will be happy to hear them reuniting with Pharrell over a classic Neptunes banger. The artwork (pictured above) was created by none other than KAWS, who is also working on the cover art for the group’s album, which is now slated to drop this September.

Retail Spotlight: Royal/T

How do you mix all your passions into one? Ask Susan Hancock. Her love of art and Japanese culture led her to open Culver City’s Royal/T, which is a cafÃ©, concept shop and an art exhibition space all under the same roof…

Currently, the art space is curated by renowned New York based artist KAWS and includes works by Olaf Breuning, Carol Dunham, Andre Ethier, Tom Friedman, Misaki Kawai, Hideaki Kawashima, KAWS, Mike Kelley, Ted Mineo, Takashi Murakami, Mr. Yoshimoto Nara, Oliver Payne & Nick Relph, Richard Prince, William Sasnal, David Shrigley, Jim Torok and Yan Pei-Ming.

Furthering their connection to the art world, KAWS designed a limited edition OriginalFake T-shirt that is available exclusively at Royal/T for $68. Besides the art aspect of the space, the cafe portion is inspired by Tokyo’s Akihabara district, and Royal/T’s waitresses are dressed in maid uniforms serving a fusion of French and Japanese fused cuisine. Trek District: The Ultimate Bike for City Slickers

Trek actually planned the District colorway to match our infamous Complex dugout jacket. So we think.

While going “green” isn’t always easy, a great way to reduce your carbon footprint is by riding a bicycle instead of driving. Sounds simple, but if you live in a major city, you really have no excuse not to get a bike. So what kind? The ballyhooed fixed-gear movement has become trendy recently, but consider fixed-gears the allover prints of the bicycle world. It makes better sense to invest in something like the all-new Trek District bike, which hits stores in the first week of April.

Our buddy Erik from Trek stopped by last week to give us a sneak-peek at the District, and it is a thing of beauty. But looks aside, what makes it special is that it’s Trek’s first single-speed, belt-drive (i.e. no chain) bicycle. The District has specs and parts to satisfy bicycle enthusiasts while being user-friendly enough that your mom would have no trouble riding it. Uh, pause. ‘Block Party’ Art Auction Helps Save Convicts

KAWS draws on event host Miss Info

Two evenings ago, The Horticultural Society of New York held their Block Party fundraiser in support of their Greenhouse Program, which prepares and trains rehabilitated felons on Riker's Island for jobs in the New York City Parks Department. Hot 97 personality, and generally awesome lady, Miss Info hosted the event. Block Party Curator Dana Albarella, acclaimed editor of hip, and hop, classic tomes such as Bobbito's Where Did You Get Those? and ego trip's Big Book of Rap Lists, enlisted a slew of top-shelf artists to contribute original works for silent auction, and many incredible works moved at reasonable prices in support of the great cause.
