For some reason it seems like Judd Apatow has made 25 movies in the last 4 years, but in reality, he’s only actually directed two: The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005) and Knocked Up (2007). These two critical and commercial smashes resulted in Apatow becoming one of the most coveted producers in Hollywood, helping bring Superbad, Pineapple Express and Step Brothers to the screen. Not since Harold Ramis has one man touched so many comedy classics.
So what’s up with J.A. Rule’s long-awaited third film as a director? Funny People opens July 31, and a too-hot-for-TV red band trailer just dropped. The flick stars Adam Sandler as a comedian/movie star, and also features future wifey Aubrey Plaza and our current cover subject Jonah Hill. And for the record, Complex would like to say you’re welcome to Mr. Apatow for obviously inspiring Funny People’s pairing of Seth Rogen and RZA. Our next suggestion: a re-remake of Miami Vice starring Chris Mintz-Plasse and Rick Ross. Fuck Michael Mann, you’re the man!

Someone told us that today marked the 54th anniversary of Alfred E. Neuman’s first appearance on the cover of MAD Magazine. Hard to say, since it’s the July 1955 issue, but we’ll buy it; more importantly, though, the granddaddy of all humor magazines (except maybe Prevention, but that’s only because people walking proudly towards death is hilarious) just dropped its 500th issue. So recognize: Without MAD, there would be no Saturday Night Live, no Simpsons, no Apatow crew–hell, no Complex blog. Think we’re wrong? MAD’s had a number of Complex-friendly covers over the years…and yes, we’ve rounded them up as a way to say “Happy birthday, you usual gang of idiots.” Blecccch!

On Sunday night, Comedy Central broadcast The Night of Too Many Stars, a benefit for autism education. As part of the festivities, Judd Apatow directed a series of mock PSAs based on NBC’s classic “The More You Know” spots (renamed here as “Know More Things”). The Hayden Panettiere Sexual Harassment message leaked out last week on FunnyOrDie, and now a new one starring Forgetting Sarah Marshall’s Kristen Bell and Superbad’s Christopher Mintz-Plasse has popped up. This time, KB is begging viewers to donate to the McLovin’ Fund, because Mintz-Plasse will never work again and is destined for a life of poverty and substance abuse. Comedy! Check it out after the jump.

With our Green Issue hitting stands, we like to fancy ourselves the experts on 420-friendly comedies. Definitely one of the upcoming stoner flicks we’re looking forward to is Pineapple Express, the new banger from producer Judd Apatow that stars two former Complex cover subjects: Seth Rogen and James Franco. JoBlo.com just leaked this poster (click the image above to see it) with the new tagline “Put This In Your Pipe And Smoke It.” We will, thanks. In case you missed it, watch the movie’s trailer after the jump before it opens on August 8th.
