Yeah, we’re over Auto-Tune and we definitely think hip-hop needs to be about more than vapid party songs, but if we wind up hitting the town this weekend, the last thing we want to hear is something reminiscent of the backpack rap stored away in the depths of our iPods. See, when bottles are getting popped and girls are getting wild, songs like this banger from DJ Webstar and Jim Jones need to be somewhere on the playlist. So turn up the bass and turn down your lyrical expectations (although Capo kind of ripped his verse!) and you won’t be disappointed.

Our Shuffle selection, “Hoochie Coo,” can be heard in the video above and caught our attention with its catchy Mos Def hook and splashy verses from Jim Jones, but the high profile collaborations don’t stop there. It turns out that the Blak Roc Project is getting help from several more notable MCs (Raekwon, Q-Tip, and Pharoahe Monch to name a few) with production handled by rock band, The Black Keys. Things look promising and we really think Dame Dash might be onto something here, but we’ll know for sure when the album hits stores on Black Friday.

Jim Jones makes his grand entrance

Complex: We saw you come into the gym on a skateboard, what was the deal with that?

Jim Jones: You know, I like to have fun. I seen the kid outside on the skateboard. I told him, “Let me hold that for a second, I gotta make my grand entrance!” An entrance is always important no matter what it is—even if it’s court!

Complex: You’ve done a lot of Twittering through the game and you’ve been calling it “easy.” Has the competition been that lacking?

Jim Jones: We the underdogs. It feels easy though. We’re underdogs but we going hard. Defense is our best offense, you know.

Complex: You got a little injured there. You’re no Drake at all, but is that gonna affect your ability to dunk out here?

Jim Jones: I think I might have messed up the chances with this thigh injury. I was just trying to attempt one off the court just now and I was like, “Oh, it might be over for that dunk.”

Complex: We noticed that you’re very versatile. You played your game and then you took the coaches seat. What do you think it takes to be a good leader?

Jim Jones: To be a leader it takes poise. You gotta understand what’s going on. There’s a lot that goes with leadership but for the most part, the only way you can be a good leader is if you’re a good soldier. So you know, I been through the rank to being a good soldier. I think I was the top of my class, so with that I took my experience in being a leader. So when you see me out there on the court, I’m helping the soldiers get money.

Complex: True. Who is the most famous person you’ve played ball against?

Jim Jones: Kevin Garnett might be the most famous person I’ve ever played ball against.

Complex: And you won right?

Jim Jones: Well it was an MTV thing. We lost by like 2 points. It was me and Cam against Kev and his man.

Complex: Nice, so you and Asher both support marijuana…

Jim Jones: [Laughs.]

Complex: …and a lot of athletes use steroids. Is weed an enhancement drug for you at all?

Jim Jones: To me the haze is like Gatorade! I just took me a pull and I’m ready to play again. [Laughs.] You know what I mean? That’s a whole different game. If they wanna play that game after the ball game, then let’s play. May the best man stand.

Complex: [Laughs.] So even though you’ve been quoted as saying that Asher didn’t give you money for the “I Love College” Remix and instead just called to say thanks, can we expect another collabo track?

Jim Jones: We’re definitely going to work on another collabo. I’m in the midst of working on my album. So I’m gonna try to get him on my album, that would be dope.

Complex: Any information you can give us on the new album?

Jim Jones: Just that I’m going back home…home part 2.

Complex: How often do you play ball?

Asher Roth: I’m not a big baller, I do that hotshot game and maybe a little horse, but competitive basketball is a little much. There’s some real ballers out there, I’m not one of them.

Complex: Who’s the best rapper you’ve played ball against?

Asher Roth: Jim Jones.

Complex: Today?

Asher Roth: [Laughs.] Yeah. I normally don’t really get to play basketball against other rappers. Unless you count my friends, they’re rappers—sometimes.

Complex: If you could make a dream team with 3 other people, who would be in it?

Asher Roth: Kirk Hinrich, Jeff Hornacek, and Dan Majerle.

Complex: Why?

Asher Roth: ‘Cause they’re all white boy ballers that are nasty.

Complex: Do you view marijuana as an enhancement drug? Do you think they’ll count you for cheating?

Asher Roth: They’ll probably count me as cheating in a sense of, do I use it for medical? Not necessarily.

Complex: Does it make you a better player?

Asher Roth: As far as I’m concerned, the reformation of marijuana laws is something that I take seriously. I think it’s something that can stimulate the economy. So yeah, I use it for recreation, and that’s just me. But in a sense of a real political issue, even though I don’t get into politics ’cause politics is synonymous with bullshit, there’s some very real stuff with reformation of marijuana laws.

Complex: Fair enough. The Converse uniforms are pretty cool, but what’s the most embarrassing piece of clothing you’ve ever worn?

Asher Roth: I don’t really step out the house trying to make a fashion statement. I step out the house making sure I’m comfortable, so I mean fashion aficionados might make fun of some of the shit that I wear, but as long as I’m comfortable—like right now, people would bug out about thong sandals and socks.

Complex: Jimmy actually put on his Twitter that there was no way you were gonna pull anything off with your thong shoes.

Asher Roth: I’m good. I’m comfortable and that’s all that matters.

The numbers are in: Even with the Complex cosign, it turns out that Cam’ron’s album sold only 100 more copies than Jim Jones‘—which would be acceptable had the Capo not totally bricked himself. Damn, homies. In high school, you was the mans, homies! What the fuck happened to you?

We all know record sales don’t mean much anymore, but it’s still pretty clear that the Diplomats‘ reign is over, and that’s bad for hip-hop. The Dips’ output at their peak—Diplomatic Immunity, Purple Haze, Juelz‘ and Jones’ debuts and countless piff-tastic mixtapes—puts the crew up there with one of the best rap collectives of all time. Yeah, we said it. So how can we get the gang back on top? The first step is obvious: Get Cam, Jimmy and Juelz to reunite as a team. But then what? We’ve come up with 5 ways to bring Dipset back to dominance…

1. RECRUIT NEW MEMBERS.

Would anybody really miss 40 Cal or J.R. Writer? These days, the kids love Kid Cudi (a.k.a. 40 Cudi) and Drake (a.k.a. Drake Da God), so bring them in the fold—Hell Rell will strong-arm ‘em if necessary. (Shit, Jones already jumped on “Day and Night.”) As in sports, new rookie blood can add much-needed energy to the vets. Cudi and Drake are gonna have to get used to rockin’ doo-rags, though.

2. BRING MAX B BACK.

To that end, it’s time that Capo let bygones be bygones with Biggaveli. Let’s face it, Jones made some of his best music with Max riding shotgun. Plus Wavy Crockett has mad traction on the Internet nowadays. Worldstarhiphop.com would eat it up. Everybody wins. *Insert Max B laugh*

3. EMBRACE THE HIPSTERS.

If the so-called “streets” are frontin’, then the Dips should run a Fader route and lock down the freelance-graphic-design crowd. That means collabos with groups like Mastodon, production from Diplo and more shows in the Willy B. Ironic love is love nonetheless. Plus we miss running into white hipster girls that like Dipset. Like, “running into.” Literally.

4. START A NEW BEEF.

At its peak, Dipset would start shit with anybody, just for the fuck of it. Jay-Z, Nas, 50—nobody was safe. We think the Dips need to reclaim the beef throne (no homo) with a full-out attack on…Slaughterhouse 5. It may be a can’t-win situation lyrically, but you can guarantee that the S5 dudes will release 2,431 counter-dis records and webcam attacks in response. That alone should keep Dipset relevant for a while.

5. MAKE MORE MOVIES.

So they can make a sequel to Night at the Museum, but we can’t get “Killa Season 2″???? We need more shit like this in our lives. Yo Cam: If it comes down to it, we got videographers on Complex staff. Holla at us!

SOUNDS LIKE: An older, wiser Capo.

FUN FACT: The controversial track “Frenemies” samples the 1983 Isley Brothers song “Ballad For The Fallen Soldier,” which was also used on Jay-Z’s 1998 Too $hort duet “A Week Ago.”

WHY COMPLEX IS CO-SIGNING IT: There’s no denying Jim Jones’ affable personality, but his talent as a musician has never been able to get any real respect. Once thought of as Cam’ron’s weed carrier, Capo has evolved over the last decade into a more viable mainstream artist than his one-time mentor. But while his first three albums featured one or two memorable singles and a smattering of unfocused filler, his Columbia Records debut Pray IV Reign shows that Complex’s former cover star has way more up his sleeve…

He might never top “We Fly High” in terms of commercial success, but his Ron Browz-assisted anthem “Pop Champagne” came damn close this year. Regardless, Pray 4 Reign is about more than partying'each song shows an aspect of Capo’s life, which allowed him to turn the album into a slice of musical theater last fall called The Hip-Hop Monologues: Inside the Life & Mind of Jim Jones. On “Pulling Me Back,” he struggles with leaving the dangers of 'hood life behind, while on “My, My, My,” he pays tribute to murdered rapper and friend Stack Bundles. Even the album’s softer moments'”Precious” with Ryan Leslie and “This Is The Life” with Starr'Jones seems more focused than ever. Jones still has a ways to go before he starts making classic hip-hop albums, but Pray IV Reign is definitely a solid splash in the right direction.
