Opened by brothers Simon and Elias Bingham in 2007, No Comply has established itself as the go-to skate shop in downtown Austin. This family owned shop offers hard goods, shoes and apparel. In addition to its solid inventory, NC is also environmentally conscious, and makes an effort to recycle used skate products collected throughout their community and sell them in their shop.
The store stocks top-notch brands such as Adidas Campus Vulc, Adidas Skateboarding, Alien Workshop, Altamont, Anti-Hero, Benny Gold, Brixton, Chocolate, Diamond, Emerica, Girl, Habitat, Krooked, Lakai Manchesters, Matix, Nike Dunks, Nike SB, Roger, and RVCA. Oh, and the best part? The shopping experience is pleasant, thanks to the brothers doing without the whole I-own-a-skate-shop-and-can-act-like-an-a-hole-to-everyone mindset. With all due respect to other brands, we prefer Ford’s big bodied, well-oiled machines. Forget the American-made cars on Detroit’s assembly line, the curvaceous Ms. Melyssa Ford has better whip appeal. It’s been 10 years since homegirl first made a splash in music videos for folks like Jay-Z (”Hey Papi”), Jadakiss (”Knock Yourself Out”), and Usher (”Yeah”), and there’s no denying that Melyssa’s assets helped donkey kick start hip-hop’s trend for featuring girls with thick hips, and thighs (butter faces included).
As a companion to our Super Two’s Day column, we’re kicking off Thickness Thursday, where we pay tribute to women who have curves all over. With Melyssa’s birthday celebration jumping off tomorrow, we thought it would be appropriate to take a look back at some of the best shots that earned Melyssa her alias Jessica Rabbit. Check 'em out below…
If Shaggy and Sean Paul were the pinnacle of the dancehall’s cross-over success in the mid-to-late ’90s, singer Tami Chynn has the potential to become the female equivalent today. With the exception of Rihanna, singers from the Caribbean have largely been unable to break out of the dancehall mold to achieve lasting success.
One thing’s for sure, it helps to have a major label backing the effort, which Universal did in 2006 when they released Tami Chynn’s debut Out Of Many One. While the rhythms were catchy and sexy to match Tami’s drop-dead-gorgeous looks, they catered to the raw, traditional riddim format of dancehall tracks. But for her sophomore follow-up, she’s going pop under the guidance of Akon and with the support of Steve Rifkin’s SRC label. Last week, Complex chopped it up with Tami about her new album Prima Donna, cat-calling in ATL, and becoming fodder for Jamaican tabloids…
Until Rihanna washed up on our shores, the success of singers from Barbados has been spotty. Where are you Rupee? But now, Rebel-One Management (the same folks who back Rihanna) are are hoping to duplicate their success with a new Bajan good girl by the name of Shontelle.
After writing the crossover hit “Roll” for soca singer Alison Hinds, 23-year-old Shontelle Layne signed a solo deal with SRC/Universal. Her forthcoming album, Shontelligence is expected to hit shelves this year, led by her cutesy ladies-anthem”T-Shirt.” This week, one of her inspirational tracks “Battle Cry” appeared on Yes We Can: Voices Of A Grassroots Movement, a compilation album for the Democratic National Convention. But with politics pushed to the side, we got Shontelle’s feedback on her modeling debut at fashion week, being obsessed with her labelmate Akon, and repping her country right. Get familiar by reading our exclusive interview below…
It’s hard to believe it was over twenty years ago that Janet Jackson threw on black jeans and a t-shirt for her classic “Pleasure Principle” video. Yesterday, the pop-starlet announced that she has teamed up with Bruno Schiavi (the man behind Dr. 90210’s intimate apparel) to create a lingerie collection named after her 1986 smash.
The announcement means that the titty-slipping queen will be joining the slew of other fly celebrity chicks who have tried to capitalize on their sex appeal by dropping “intimates.”
There’s a lot more to Woody Allen’s new movie Vicky Cristina Barcelona than Penelope Cruz and Scarlett Johansson’s over-hyped lip-lock. Penelope steals the show as Javier Bardem’s completely bonkers ex, who who has a tendency to show her love by stabbing and shooting.
No one can really prepare for the emotional rollercoaster that comes with leaving your lady. But if you’ve seen cautionary tales like Fatal Attraction with Glen Close'the O.G. of crazy-ass G.F.’s'then you might be more prepared when they go balls to the wall. Check out these other psycho exes and watch your back…
Seeing Danity Kane’s Aubrey O’Day locking lips with another female was the moment we’ve been waiting for. The surprise came last night when Aubrella was out and about with socialite/model Lydia Hearst-Shaw at the posh New York nightclub, Butter.
After landmark hook-ups like Denise Richards and Neve Campbell in Wild Things or the 2003 Madonna x Britney Spears x Christina Aguilera collabo, we thought that the trend of famous women locking lips had run its course. But even before the Aubrey/Lydia incident, it was already shaping up to be the year of the faux-lesbian make-out session. Check out our top 5 girl-on-girl moments from 2008 below.
When our favorite child stars fall off the radar, we always fear the worst. And until today, we thought Danielle Fishel'better known as Topanga Lawrence from Boy Meets World'was a goner for sure. Turns out the baby-faced sweetheart is coming back on August 16th with a celebrity gossip show on the Style network called The Dish.
Granted, we lost interest in Topanga near the end of BMW’s run (she got married to boring ass Corey, struggled with weight, etc), but she will always be one of TV’s great PYTs, in the tradition of Winnie Cooper. Even if her new show sucks (very likely), we’re glad to see her back. Check out some of Danielle’s best on-screen moments below.
It would be a waste for anyone with a perfectly proportioned body like Kim Kardashian to hide it from the rest of the world (remember where you saw her first!). Sure, she kicked things off with the sex tape, but that was well over a year ago, and Kimmy’s 15 minutes don’t seem to be ending any time soon.
So how does she do it? The most recent news is that the Persian butter-cream will be putting her assets back to work on the new season of Dancing With The Stars in September. But this is only the latest in a long string of tactics used by Kim. K to steadily build on her initial “scandal.” After the jump, take a look at the top 5 ways that the ass-tastic starlet has remained in the spotlight.
Before Cassie, there was Amerie. You know, the other racially ambiguous model-turned-pop star who turned a million heads. We always had love for the Black/Korean cup of brown sugar, but her old label Columbia dropped her last year after deciding not to release her third album in the US. But now, it seems like she has another shot at success.
Rumors have been circulating for months about the the singer landing a new deal. Well, we just confirmed with sources at the label that Amerie has officially signed to Def Jam. Somebody get Dream and Tricky on the line! In case you need a refresher course on how fine this woman is, we’ve compiled her greatest hits after the jump…
Marketing gurus looking to triple their company’s worth should take note'Calvin Klein’s squad has had the advertising game in a choke-hold for over two decades. And ever since Kate Moss’s controversial black and white “heroin chic” ads debuted in 1993, CK has known that using striking photographs of beautiful women is the best way to move major units.
Today, a preview of the company’s latest campaign hit the net, and it shows Eva Mendes as the face (and body!) of their Seductive Underwear collection. Looks like CK will be keeping their winning ad streak alive. After the jump, check out five of our favorite Calvin Klein ladies throughout the years.
Hollywood actors have a long history for faking the funk when they portray anyone of another ethnicity. Don’t get it twisted, we’re not mad at the Italian-born Al Pacino for playing a Cuban or even Robert Downey Jr.’s ironic blackface in Tropic Thunder, but we don’t quite know how to feel about Natalie Portman’s parody of a Bollywood starlett in Devandra Banhart’s new video for a track titled “Carmensita”.
Obviously, Portman landed the role because she’s dating the Venezuelan folk singer. But with the plethora of real life Bollywood beauties out there, we might have cast someone who is actually, you know, Indian. Everybody knows Aishwarya Rai, but there are a gang of younger starletts just waiting for an introduction to the West. After the jump we’ve compiled five real Bollywood stunners who would’ve put Portman’s performance to shame.
The internet is gushing yet again with news of another celebrity baby. With a three year old already in tow, Jennifer Garner is now expecting her second child. It seems as if resurrecting her ailing career will have to wait another nine months.
Don’t get it twisted'we’re pro-parenthood all day. But for celebrity chicks, it seems like having a child is the easiest road to destroying the career that they spent so many years building up. For every mom like Heidi Klum who keeps her career on course, there are 10 more who pop out a baby and are never heard from again. Jennifer Garner was on top of when Alias was on the air, but now she seems dangerously close to being known as “Ben Affleck’s formerly famous wife.” After the jump, we’ve compiled 5 other women who fell victim to the dangers of motherhood.
