Most of us have been around long enough to experience at least a thousand Friday’s and for some reason, they’re just as good every time. With that said, you might as well download some new songs to give your weekend that extra boost. And if you’re not doing anything, please text some friends and/or jumpoffs for the sake of your social life, but listen to our Shuffle playlist while you’re doing it.
Read our interview with the TS general for his response to the criticisms of his late partner's wife and the haters who say he can't write his own hits.

If there’s one thing Fat Joe believes in, it’s consistency. Which is why you may often hear him and his brother-from-another DJ Khaled constantly boast “We Make Hit Recorddss.” That being said, it’s about that time of year when Joey Crack is ready to drop another album, this time a sequel to a sequel titled J.O.S.E. 2 which drops May 19th.

Around the time Joey held his listening session in NYC for the album, we got the TS head-honcho on the phone to speak on a number of topics. Yup, we’ve been sitting on it, and now we’ve decided it’s time you hear his thoughts on his now-pushed-back album, DJ Khaled the executive, 50’s first album (and why he refuses to call it a classic) and how he feels about Big Pun’s wife Liza Rios criticizing him for not keeping Pun’s memory alive. It’s coca, bitch.
[ed note: again this was before Joey blacked out on the "Mafia Music" remix, or we would’ve obviously asked him about it]

Interview by Joe La Puma

Complex: To get the cliché questions out of the way, how excited are you about this album?

Fat Joe: Big, man. The reason why it’s called J.O.S.E. 2 is because my biggest album was J.O.S.E. and the music I make, it’s just so big. You know I got so much hits on this album. Big songs, man. Big street jams. It feels big, man. I’m waiting for the homerun. I’m really, really proud of the work.

Complex: What track on the album won’t be released as a single but is your personal favorite?

Fat Joe: This one song called “Congratulations.” It’s going to be a summer banger. It’s just about how everybody who wants to be famous has to be careful what you wish for. Look at Chris Brown and Rihanna. They’re trying to get their life together. They got paparazzi and everybody all on them now, so it’s like you got to be careful with what you wish for. I mean, unfortunately there’s domestic violence going around in this country, and around the world every single day. Some couples get a chance to work it out. Get back together. Now they in the cameras. Everybody wants to be famous. You have to be ready to deal with consequences. I also have another song called “HO” which is that New York Hip-Hop hardcore, crazy shit.

Complex: So even though he’s been making back-to-back hits, some people in New York don’t like Ron Browz using auto-tune. As someone who worked with him, what’s your take on his haters?

Fat Joe: I don’t know why they feel like that, because he’s making good music. In New York, they love it. “Pop Champagne” it wasn’t just New York, it was a big song. We have to move with the times, man. That happens to be what’s hot, and he happens to be hot doing it. So I can’t be mad at nobody doing it.

Complex: You make consistent hits every year, but some people criticize that they’re off the strength of other people like Lil Wayne. How do you respond to that?

Fat Joe: I love it. I’d rather have them criticize me for working with other big artists than me not being relevant, and having a hit. And I write songs and I write hit hooks myself. “Lean Back,” “Make It Rain”—I wrote those hooks. Like this song I did with Akon, I found the hook with this writer and then we told Akon to sing it. So I really A&R my projects.

Complex: So you wrote the hook that Wayne spits in “Make It Rain”?

Fat Joe: Absolutely. It was me on there first. It was just too South for me to be on there. So it made sense that I’m cool with Wayne to get him on the hook.

Complex: Interesting… Now, you’re close with DJ Khaled, and he was recently appointed president of Def Jam South. How prepared do you think he is for a job like that?

Fat Joe: No one has ever seen an executive like DJ Khaled. Everybody in the music business who’s an executive has been polished for the job. Khaled comes with the energy that hasn’t been seen in this game, ever, from the day that fucking Lyor Cohen and Russell Simmons opened Def Jam! He’s going to put out nothing but hits. And I expect him to be one of the biggest executives in couple of years, the hip-hop game has ever seen. I guarantee he’s going to be an executive of a lifetime. Remember I told you.

Complex: When Khaled was on Rap City a few years ago, and the host put a bunch of albums on a table and asked Khaled to say whether they were classic. He didn’t put Get Rich or Die Trying in the classic pile. Putting aside your personal issues with 50, do you think that album was a classic?

Fat Joe: I refuse to comment on that. Because ask him if he thinks any of my songs were phenomenal hits or whatever. I can’t comment on a person who won’t comment on me in a positive light. So I wouldn’t be true to a comment if I answer that question.

Complex: How do you feel about the Rick/50 situation going on right now?

Fat Joe: Well, you know, Rick’s a big boy, man. He can handle it himself. And he obviously went after 50. And they got beef and they’re going to handle their beef. Whether it’s music or whatever the case may be. That’s them. I don’t know what to tell you.

Complex: Did it surprise you that Rick actually started it?

Fat Joe: Well, 50’s been taking shots for a while. So I guess it’s almost a response, to be honest with you. We make hot music. Whoever makes big records is a winner to me. Not the person with the mumbo jumbo, or the biggest diss record, or whatever the case may be. In the end of the day, whoever is most successful, whoever puts out a big record, wins the battle.

Complex: Fair enough. Switching subjects, Showbiz released a DITC album called The Movement last year, but you weren’t on it. Are you still a member of the crew?

Fat Joe: Absolutely. But I didn’t even realize that happened, to tell you the truth. I never heard it. Who’s on it? Maybe it was a remake or something like that. But yeah, that’s a different time in hip-hop. That’s the motivating time. That was the time where everybody supports each other. Digging In The Crates never disrespected each other. We always motivated each other and helped each other. That’s a whole new category with this new school bullshit. With loyalty and shit like that. With Digging In The Crates and myself, it’s all about the music.

Complex: Recently, a couple of well-respected hip-hop bloggers were getting into the age-old debate of who was better, Pun or B.I.G. Where do you stand on that argument?

Fat Joe: Pun was a great artist, but Biggie was a great artist. I can’t tell you who is better. That’s like the same as saying he’s better than Biggie. I can’t say that man. They both brought strong energy to the hip-hop game. And they’re both extremely talented, and charismatic as well. Funny thing they had in common was they were both funny, and they were both witty. Had a lot of charisma.

Complex: Speaking of Pun. His wife has said in interviews that you’re not keeping his memory alive. How hurtful was that to you, and how did you take that?

Fat Joe: I don’t care. I don’t care what she says to me. Not keeping Pun’s memory alive? If I don’t keep Pun’s memory alive, who does? You know everything I do, I represent Big Pun. If I won an award, I represent Big Pun. I’m the only one who says Big Pun is the best rapper on earth. If I don’t rep Big Pun, then who reps Big Pun?

Complex: Understandable. On a lighter note, you’re big into sneakers, and word is that you’re a Jordan-head. How do you feel about the new fusions that have been dropping?

Fat Joe: Yeah, I like the new Jordan Air Force Ones. Those shits are crazy.

Complex: When was the last time you actually bought Jordan’s from a store?

Fat Joe: Maybe two days ago.

Complex: Oh, really?

Fat Joe: Yeah, I buy sneakers everyday. It’s my fucking addiction. I don’t really need them, but it’s fucking addictive. I’m like a little kid that has a basketball and don’t want nobody else to play with it. “It’s mine, it’s mine, and it’s mine!” When it comes to sneakers.

Complex: What single pair of Jordan’s do you own most multiple pairs of?

Fat Joe: I would say the IIIs. I have like 5 or 6 pairs.

Complex: Cool man, thanks for taking the time, good luck on the album.

Fat Joe: Thanks man, I appreciate it. Keep a tight ass, buddy.

Complex: [Blank Stare, hangs up]

For our upcoming Feb/March 2009 cover story (dropping on February 10) we put the spotlight on Canadian actress, Elisha Cuthbert of The Girl Next Door fame. Read through our interview to see her thoughts about her home-country, her sensitive role in Captivity, and her liking for hockey. [LINK]

Even before the NBA, Kobe Bryant was hated by many, and loved by few. Check out this exclusive interview conducted by Marc Ecko, where Bryant poignantly breaks down his legacy in the league, the technology used for his upcoming shoes with Nike, and reasons behind his competitive nature. [LINK]

We were a little worried when we heard Toccara Jones recently devoting herself to her fitness DVD.
Ever feel like fighting your boss? Upload a picture of him into this video game and prepare to get your aggression out.

In the nearly three years since EA’s Fight Night Round 3 revolutionized boxing video games, we’ve been starving for another console puncher to hold us down until Round 4 drops in ‘09 (sorry, 2K, but Prizefighter was trash). This week, Facebreaker (360, PS3, Wii) steps into the ring, and unlike the Fight Night series, it’s a simple button-mashing cartoon brawler, not a boxing sim. That’s good news for all of us who heavily fucked with Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! and Ring King back in the day.

Like in Punch-Out!!, the comical characters in Facebreaker play on stereotypes (the brute Russian, the Latin lover, etc.). What’s especially cool is the Photo GameFace feature, which allows you to upload real-life photos to create new characters and share them online. Looks like it’s finally time for that 50 Cent vs. Joey Crack fight to pop off. Check out the brand-new Kimbo Slice Facebreaker commercial below…

Run that piece! In honor of Yung Berg's recent robbery, Complex rates the greatest shine-stealers in rap history.

Middle-aged white guys buy snazzy sports cars and flaunt them as if they’re chrome, fuel-injected, super-charged effigies of their now flaccid cocks. Rappers, on the other hand, buy gaudy medallions attached to equally gaudy links and rock them as if they’re platinum-and-gold-plated, diamond-encrusted effigies of their now flaccid cocks. So you can imagine how emasculated your favorite rapper feels when another rapper, or local stick-up kid, comes along, takes their shine, and leaks a picture or youtube video. It’s like they’re holding their penises (¡NH!) fully exposed for the world to see! Ay Carumba!

In any case, the latest incident of manhood snatching befell poor widdle Yung Berg while the diddy-bopper cruised the mean streets of Detroit (what he was doing wearing jewelry in the D, we don’t know either). Needless to say, Berg is probably somewhere licking his wounds. But cheer up, lil’ buddy! You just entered a club whose members include hip hop’s elite.

To boost Berg’s gloomy disposition, Complex combed the annals (ayo!) of hip hop history (along with rumors and allegations as well) to compile an authoritative list of the most notorious chain snatchings ever. To be fair to the victims and the vickers, we rated each incident by how emasculating it was to their careers, as well as the probability that the snatching actually happened (since almost none of the incidents can be verified by police reports) . If you don’t read this blog, you’re just robbing yourself.

Click here to start the snatchin’!

Memphis Bleek's embarrassing shampoo ad inspired us to round up some memorable MC product pitches from the last 20 years.

“Memph Bleek is…Reinforced Active Fruit Concentrate.”

Perhaps it’s a sign of web video overload that the release of last week’s hilariously awful Garner Fructis shampoo ad with Memphis Bleek went largely unnoticed'either that, or Bleek really is that irrelevant these days.

But in his defense, you can’t really eat off the rap game any more. And besides, Memph man is far from the first rapper to embarrass himself while endorsing a product (he is the first MC to shill for women’s shampoo, so throw up the Roc for that). We went deep into the archives to dig up the worst-ever ads featuring rappers. See our cringe-inducing collection, as well as Bleek’s awesome ad, below

RAPPER: THE FAT BOYS
PRODUCT: SWATCH
YEAR: 1985

Funny how our oldest ad is probably the least offensive. It’s also funny how the “stiff=white; fun=black” tropes haven’t changed much over the last 20 years.

RAPPER: KID ‘N PLAY
PRODUCT: SPRITE
YEAR: 1991

All we can say is: Damn, these muthafuckas are hyped for some muthafuckin’ Sprite. Give ‘em a two-liter bottle, they’re liable to start French-kissing each other.

RAPPER: MC HAMMER
PRODUCT: KFC POPCORN CHICKEN
YEAR: 1992

Seriously, who directed this ad? David Duke?

RAPPER: CHICKEN MCNUGGETS
PRODUCT: MCDONALD’S
YEAR: EARLY ‘90S

Damn, never thought we’d see the day. Those McNuggets fucking sold out, big-time.

RAPPER: REDMAN
PRODUCT: KARL KANI
YEAR: MID ‘90S

This is actually dope'we just wanted to put an example of a rapper ad done right. “Old folks put a ‘K’ on their pacemaker.” Props also go to the St. Ides collection and the mid-’90s Sprite classics.

RAPPER: SIR MIX-A-LOT
PRODUCT: TARGET
YEAR: 2005

Just goes to show that you can live off one gimmick song for the rest of your life. In other words, get ready for a “Super Glue that hooooooole” ad in about 20 years.

RAPPER: FAT JOE
PRODUCT: EASTERN MOTORS
YEAR: 2006

Here’s the equivalent of George Clooney doing a TV ad in Japan. Don’t think we weren’t gonna find this, Joey! We actually have mad love for Eastern Motors and their awesome jingle. This is worth a look for Joe’s awesome acting skills.

RAPPER: DIDDY
PRODUCT: SEAN JOHN UNFORGIVABLE COLOGNE
YEAR: 2007

What’s worse: (1) how seriously Diddy takes himself in his cologne ads, or (2) how flagrantly Ryan Leslie has swagger-jacked Puff’s whole steez. We’ll go with number two.

RAPPER: KANYE WEST
PRODUCT: ABSOLUT VODKA
YEAR: 2008

This shit is so aggressively “hip” that it’s aggressively wack. You know this ad took the brainpower of 16 white people in khaki pants, along with two “urban” kids hired to consult them. Viral our ass!

RAPPER: MEMPHIS BLEEK
PRODUCT: GARNIER FRUCTIS
YEAR: 2008

Bleek can’t be struggling for money (Hov!), so we wonder how this collabo was born. Our best guess is that Bleek was drunk and high at a club and unwittingly signed on as some balding ad exec pitched him while dancing awkwardly to “Big Pimpin.’” Something like that.

The most recent jab from Fiddy’s camp comes in this new video where it’s revealed G-Unit will drop a mixtape March 11 (the same day Fat Joe’s forthcoming “Elephant In The Room” drops) entitled “Elephant In The Sand.” Watch the video after the jump to see a preview of what looks like a hilarious mixtape cover, as well as Fat Joe’s response to E-Unit’s sub-par Photoshoping skills.
Although Chelsea Handler is usually too obnoxious to even try and stomach watching, this interview she did with Fat Joe is pretty entertaining. Joey CRACK briefly talks about how he never wins a Grammy because of the “backpack mafia” and his ongoing beef with 50-Cent, claiming “this guy’s as real as the WWF.” Good stuff.

Versatility: Talib Kweli on how Hip Hop has changed, “It's a different competition these days: Who is the best businessman? Who's got the best swagger? Who can be the coolest? At the time I came in, it was almost about not being cool. It wasn't about looking the part. It was really about bringing it. The best MCs, like Lil Wayne, aren't the best because they can rap; it's because they understand that.”

Therapeutic: Erykah Badu spoke to a crowd in Tel Aviv, Israel and announced her support for Palestinian Hip Hop. Rocking an ‘Out of Iraq’ t-shirt, the singer expressed why she admires about it, “They use (hip-hop) as a form of liberation, as a form of pre-resistance, as a form of therapy,” she said.

L’chaim!: On the stranger side of Rap news, Pharrell was driving past an orthodox Jewish wedding in Miami and ended up stopping to take pictures. Guests then invited him to join the service and bless the groom. Then he played this card, “He kept asking people: ‘Don’t you know who I am? You don’t know (hit song) ‘Drop It Like It’s Hot?’ But he was having fun.”

Taxing: Fat Joe claims his monies are in order in light of reports that he owes back taxes, “I definitely pay my taxes, I’m straight upwith it. The first thing I ever learned in the entertainment business is you gotta pay the IRS. First thing. Before I take a dollar, before I buy me a bag of potato chips, I pay those people.”
