Today marks the release of Reggae Gold 2009, the 17th installment in VP Records’ peerless annual compilation. And sure, there are some of the year’s great tracks on there (Laden’s “Money Over War” is our personal favorite), but for reggae die-hards who already have most of the songs, the real draw is the covers. Not since the Game Recordings singles of the ’90s (shout out to Shecky Green!) has cover art been executed so flawlessly. To that end, we’ve collected our very favorite Reggae Gold (and sister compilation Soca Gold) cover girls, taken a look at some other work they’ve done, and opened it up to you. The God of the twos has looked down and smiled upon us here at Complex. O yea verily, he hath blessed us, and our cups runneth over thanks to model/actress Esther Baxter. Church! You heard right, we caught up with the video legend so she could help us whip out another dose of the Complex 7. Our new blessed-chest friend, if you didn’t already know, has appeared in shortform classics like Petey Pablo’s “Freek-A-Leek”, Will Smith’s “Switch”, Nelly’s “Shake Ya Tailfeather” and Kanye West’s “The New Workout Plan”.
But with Esther talking retirement, we weren’t sure if we would be able to see her one-two punch again, but lucky for us she was kind enough to stop by and show some love.
