It’s hard to believe sometimes, but Drake is still technically a new artist. The kid has accomplished a lot in the past several months, but getting Kanye, Wayne, and Eminem to contribute verses to his lost mixtape cut “Forever” and clear their schedules to star in the music video, directed by Hype Williams no less, might be his most impressive task to date. Of course, the LeBron James factor (the song is on the soundtrack for his upcoming documentary) was probably helpful in getting all parties involved too. Just like Drizzy’s first big video, this one is already host to a bevy of mixed opinions, but that’s to be expected. No matter how you feel about the video, it’s a major look regardless.

IMPOSTOR OF: MF Doom
• Earlier this year, Doom finally admitted to using an impostor for some of his live shows. His rationale: “I’m a director as well as a writer. I choose different characters.” Yeah, and we chose to pay $20 for a shitty, fake show and we want our money back.

IMPOSTOR OF: Kanye West
• When Stephen Colbert launched “Operation Humble Kanye West” last December in an attempt to knock 808s & Heartbreak from the number one spot on the iTunes album chart, the fake ‘Ye tweeted the above remark. Press outlets went crazy with the response, prompting an ALL CAPS blog rant from Mr. West denouncing the illegitimate Twitter account.

IMPOSTOR OF: Nelly
• Back in 2001, when there was actually incentive for impersonating Nelly, one shameless impostor did just that on the same night the real Nelly was cleaning up at The Source awards. The fake celebrity showed up to a nightclub with six bodyguards, wearing $20,000 worth of jewelry. When denied entry, the Nelly impostor caused a huge scene that took police two hours to clear. Wow, dude needs a father figure.

IMPOSTOR OF: Kid Cudi
• Several months ago, NYC’s own M2 Ultra Lounge fell victim to another impostor sham. The Scott Mescudi poser was on stage with the DJ for a few moments and was also recorded drunkenly rambling in the video clip above. Eh, that’s definitely not the guy that graced the cover of our latest issue.

IMPOSTOR OF: Jay-Z
• Angelous, Sacario, and NOE aren’t impostors per se, but did anyone ever listen to them without hearing, “This guy sounds just like Jay-Z,” beforehand? Exactly. These were the guys Jay was talking about when he said, “There’s a whole museum of Hov MC’ers / Everybody duping the flow, you see ‘em.” Yeah, we see ‘em.

The tension came to a head this week when he released the scathing diss record, “The Warning.” While it’s the most brutal moment of their conflicts, it’s certainly not the first. Keep reading to check out every detail of the long and complicated History Of Eminem And Mariah Carey’s Relationship…

2001: The Relationship Begins
• After Eminem met with Mariah to discuss a possible collaboration on her Charmbracelet album, the couple allegedly began dating.

2002: Mariah Turns Up On The Eminem Show
• Marshall mentioned the diva in song twice on his third album. He rapped “What you trying be? My new wife? / What, you Mariah? Fly through twice” on “Superman” and on “When The Music Stops” suggested that he would “beg Mariah to take [him] back” before censoring his lyrics.

2002: Eminem Confirms The Fling
• When asked about the relationship by Rolling Stone, Em answered, “There’s truth to that. But on the whole personal level, I’m not really feeling it. I just don’t like her as a person.”

2002: Mariah Denies Romance Rumors
• MC told Maxim that there was no “sexual relationship” between her and Slim Shady. She later told Larry King: “I hung out with him, I spoke to him on the phone. I think I was probably with him a total of four times. And I don’t consider that dating somebody.”

2002: Mariah Carey Clowns Slim Shady
• On “Clown” from Charmbracelet, the singer ambiguously addressed the relationship, saying that she “should’ve left it at I like your music too” and insinuates that the only reason she flew to Eminem’s house is because “taking [her] G5 twenty minutes wasn’t nothing.”

2003: The Diva Takes The Beef To The Stage
• Mariah’s 2003 tour included a The Marionette Show set that parodied The Eminem Show. While performing the aforementioned “Clown” a female dancer was brought on stage sporting a blonde wig and a Detroit Pistons jersey. She never said, “no shots” so it’s clear who the target was.

2005: Eminem Responds On His Own Tour
• During the Anger Management tour, Eminem played voicemail messages allegedly from Mariah with her saying “Why won’t you see me? Why won’t you call me?” amongst other longing statements. One of Mariah’s friends told the press that an “impostor” had recorded the messages.

2006: Marshall Mentions Mimi In Song Again
• Refusing to let the issue die, Slim talked about sexing the singer on “Jimmy Crack Corn” from the Re-Up album. “Your mind’s on us like mine’s on Mariah / And y’all are just like her, you’re all fucking liars / But I’ll just keep fucking you like I fucked her / Right in the ass with KY yes sir.”

2006: Em Lashes Out On The Radio
• While visiting his Shade 45 satellite radio station to promote The Re-Up, Em continued to address his relationship with Mariah. In between calling her a “bitch” and “cunt” he admitted that they “did have a relationship for about a good six, seven months.” He cited their personalities differences as the demise of the relationship and even complimented her talent, but was bothered by “the fact that she denied [they] ever had something.”

2007: Curtis Co-Signs Marshall
• On “All Of Me” from his Curtis album, 50 Cent spit: “Em predicted it all, I don’t know how he knew it / He said women from Hollywood they liars, liars, liars / You fuck them, they get you heated, deny it like Mariah.”

2009: Eminem Drops A Bomb On The Newlyweds
• After two years of silence, Mariah’s marriage to Nick Cannon set the rapper off and inspired Relapse’s “Bagpipes From Baghdad” where he calls Nick Cannon a “prick” and wishes him “luck with the fucking whore” amongst other insults. The song led to a lengthy blog post from Nick Cannon where he defended his wife, claimed Eminem never got to “second base,” and called him racist.

2009: Mimi Thinks Marshall Is Obsessed
• “Obsessed”, the first single from MC’s upcoming album, Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel, seems to be a clear shot at Eminem, despite her and her husband’s denial of any beef. Mariah’s decision to portray a stalker in a very Eminem-like outfit for the music video makes it even harder to take the claims seriously.

2009: Eminem Ethers Mariah Carey
• Taking offense to “Obsessed” and Mariah’s constant denial of any previous romantic involvement, Eminem released this scathing diss track aimed at Mariah and her husband yesterday. He goes into graphic detail about their one sexual encounter and threatens to release incriminating pictures and audio confirming their relationship.

• Cause: Who really knows? The Game has been dissing and praising Jay-Z since his first album. “Dear Summer”, particularly the DJ Clue version, was once viewed as Hov’s most open diss towards Game. They also traded subliminal lines on Game’s “It’s Okay (One Blood)” and Jay’s “The Prelude.”

• Effect: Game’s dream came true when Jay finally mentioned him by name during a live performance of Blueprint 3’s intro, prompting the “I’m So Wavy” diss.

• Cause: On his Kanye West assisted single, “Wouldn’t Get Far”, the rapper called out Vida Guerra, Melyssa Ford, and Gloria Velez, insinuating that they only got famous by providing sexual favors. Game also claimed to have finger-banged Vida during a NYC radio interview.

• Cause: Shortly after the release of The Documentary, 50 took a strong disliking to Game’s desire to work with some of G-Unit’s enemies. “300 Bars” was amongst Game’s first disses (of many) towards the Unit.

• Cause: Ras Kass confronted The Game in an L.A. nightclub about lyrics he felt were directed towards his son. The situation got heated and led to Game supposedly hitting Ras over the head with a bottle, although that has been disputed.

“THE REAL SLIM SHADY” PERFORMANCE AT THE MTV VMAs (2000)
• In 2000, after selling a record-breaking 1.76 million units of The Marshall Mathers LP in its first week and scoring a top 5 hit with “The Real Slim Shady” earlier that year, Eminem invaded Radio City Music Hall with an army of blonde white-T-wearing clones. The key moment is when Slim Shady gives Carson Daly a dap and leaves Fred Durst hanging as he recites lyrics about them sharing Christina Aguilera. “Thought-we-were-cool”? FAIL.

“STAN” PERFORMANCE WITH ELTON JOHN AT THE 43RD GRAMMY AWARDS (2001)
• Immediately after word spread that The Marshall Mathers LP was nominated for four Grammys, including Album of the Year, GLAAD activists predictably lashed out. Eminem faced protests for his homophobic lyrics, but in a brilliant counter, managed to secure a collaboration with Sir Elton John. The duo performed “Stan,” a song with somewhat anti-gay content of its own, and made Grammy history in the process.

EM FEUDS WITH TRIUMPH THE INSULT COMIC DOG AT THE MTV VMAs (2002)
• No stranger to celebrity feuds, Eminem took it to the next level when he began beefing with puppets at the 2002 VMAs. Conan O’Brien’s notorious jokester, Triumph The Insult Comic Dog, was already harassing Moby about his beef with Eminem when Triumph decided to approach Em himself. Slim Shady and his posse didn’t respond too well. At the same show Eminem took shots at Moby when he accepted the award for “Best Male Video” by announcing to the world that he would “hit a man with glasses.” Ouch.

INDUCTING RUN-DMC INTO THE ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME (2009)
• After several years out of the spotlight, Eminem publicly marked the end of his hiatus with this speech at the 2009 induction ceremony for the Rock & Roll HOF. Em nailed the speech, and it set the table for his comeback.

ALBUM: Relapse

SOUNDS LIKE: The lovechild of Patrick Bateman from American Psycho, Hubert Selby and Rakim.

FUN FACT: The album’s first single, “We Made You,” features a sample from Walter Egan’s “Hot Summer Nights.”

WHY COMPLEX IS CO-SIGNING IT: Because you already know what happens when a psychopath can rap his ass off–but you don’t know what happens when he wakes up and has to clean up his life…

Since Relapse leaked a couple of weeks ago, there has been much chatter on message boards and from mainstream pundits that Em is stuck in the past–that his serial-killer fantasies, dirty-laundry airing, and scorn for the world of pop celebrity were fully plumbed as of six years ago. But those arguments forget a couple of key things…

1) Eminem was fucked the fuck up: addiction, Proof’s tragic passing, and all the attendant self-loathing and depression that goes along with them had the ultimate of effect of freezing dude in time. Come his defrosting in 2009, he’s like Rip Van Winkle–albeit a pathologically dextrous and wickedly honest Rip Van Winkle–and you can hear him getting comfortable over the length of the album, stretching his legs and coping with the aftermath (no pun intended) of his stasis. 2) He’s in Silence of the Lambs mass-murder mode on a few tracks (”3 A.M.,” of course, and the time-warps of “Same Song & Dance” and “Medicine Ball”), but that’s by no means the bulk of the album. Besides, the flow on Relapse is untouchable, and more than compensates for a sometimes dated fascination with Christopher Reeve and torture porn.

Instead, the payoff comes as he opens his closet; there’s no more Kim to hate, and his mother only gets two songs worth of therapy (the alternately hilarious and horrifying “My Mom” and “Insane”), which means the only demons left are his own grief and addiction. And holy shit, does he go in on himself. The last third of the album delivers everything Marshall Mathers can, from rock bottom (”Deja Vu”) to redemption (the self-produced “Beautiful”) to gleeful Slim Shady phantasmagoria (”Underground”). As a whole, any missteps are mercifully limited, as are the accents that made people wary of early leaks like the “Relapse Freestyle” and “We Made You.” Clocking in at 17 full songs (including “My Darling” and “Careful What You Wish For,” iTunes bonus cuts that would be among the best on the album), Relapse is a bracing antidote to mainstream rap’s slide into lyrical and conceptual insipidness. And real talk, if this is how someone sounds waking up after a four-year nap, we can’t even begin to imagine how crazy Relapse 2 is gonna be later this year.

Oh, but the internet was on fire last week. First Eminem’s Relapse leaked, then Nick Carey Cannon caught feelings about some of Em’s lyrics about Mariah Carey. On the track “Bagpipes from Baghdad,” Marshall goes in on his alleged ex-jumpoff and her present husband:

…Mariah whatever happened to us? Why did we have to break up?/All I asked for was a glass of punch!/You see I never really asked for much/I can’t imagine what’s going through your mind after such/A nasty break-up with that Latin hunk/Luis Miguel—Nick Cannon better back the fuck/Up, I’m not playin’, I want her back, you punk/This is Hello Kitty bedspread satin funk/Mixed with egyptian with a little rap and punk/Zapp and Eric Clapton, Shaft, Frank Zappa, crunk/And yeah baby i want another crack at ya/You can beat me with any spatula that you want/I mean I really want you bad, you c*nt/Nick you had your fun, i’ve come to kick you in your sack of junk/Man I could use a fresh batch of blood/So prepare your vernacular for Dracula acupunct…

Not even that harsh, especially in comparison to the psychosexual gorefest that is much of Relapse. Regardless, though, Nick blacked out on his blog, coming out of pocket with all kinds of threats (physical and otherwise) toward Em, even going so far as to compare Mariah to Michelle Obama and Oprah. (Even though he pulled the post in a matter of hours, you can still read it plenty of places, including here.) And that’s all we’ve heard of it so far…UNTIL NOW! See, when you have two celebrities on Twitter, chances are shit’s gonna boil over. And boil over it did. Thankfully, we follow all the parties involved, so we were able to record the whole confrontation as it went down.* Don’t say we never did anything for you…

*and by “it,” we mean “this totally false fictional account of what we wish had happened for satirical purposes only please don’t sue us Jimmy Iovine”

Last week, we argued video game movies with Planet XBox 360. This week, we’re going up against music video paradise OnSMASH. The big homie Hof and his team were nice enough to argue with us to determine the best Eminem videos of all time.

In case you haven’t noticed, Slim Shady is back—his new album Relapse leaked yesterday, and his excellent serial killer clip for “3 A.M.” (watch it here) shows he still knows how to make a striking music video. But will it make the list of Em’s greatest videos ever? Keep reading to check out our top 5 debate…

ONSMASH #5 PICK: “The Way I Am” (2000)

OnSMASH Says: In this self-produced classic, Em lashes out against overzealous fans, pressuring record executives, critics and the other causes of stress in his life. This is an essential video because Em expresses the immense amount of pressure he’s under to outperform his previous hit records. Em raps his verses while taking a header off a building showing just how uncomfortable he is with his celebrity.

Complex says: A classic, no question. Our only complaint is that you didn’t rank this masterpiece higher!

COMPLEX #5 PICK: “Mosh” (2004)

Complex Says: Released on the eve of the 2004 Presidential Election, “Mosh” is the rare exception to the “all animated videos suck” rule. The anti-War, anti-Bush protest video was produced by the Guerilla News Network and brought a very necessary message to the forefront of hip-hop, even if it was too late to stop Bush’s reelection.

OnSMASH Says: Super Predictable. Expected better from Complex, shocked “Lose Yourself” isn’t on here.

Last Friday, Asher Roth came through Complex headquarters while on a last-minute press tour for his debut album, Asleep in the Bread Aisle, which hits stores today. Instead of churning out an unimaginative Q&A we decided to resurrect one of our favorite columns, “Kanye’s Fashion Beatdowns”—but this time have A. Roth critique the fashion sense of other white rappers.

Asher broke down each Caucasoid MC’s outfit and rated it based on how appropriate it would be at the following places: 1) a country club; 2) a freestyle cipher at McDonald’s; 3) at the mall; and 4) The BET Awards. Asher says: I can’t tell what shoes he got on, [but] I’m not mad at this outfit, I’m feeling the layers, I’m feeling the shades. Are those pajama pants? You know, this is definitely a dress-for-comfort outfit.

• Country club: 4/5 At the country club this is a four only because I can’t tell if they’re shorts or not, but it looks like he’s got golf-esque shoes, so of all of them, it’s definitely a country-club outfit.
• Freestyle cipher at McDonald’s: 4/5 This is actually a good all-around outfit for the McDonald’s.
• Mall: 4/5 This is perfect.
• The BET Awards: 4/5 Pete Nice did a good job with rocking a universal outfit as far as, Hey I’m going to rock this, I’m comfortable and at the same time I can go anywhere in this.

Yesterday, we launched a new competition called STYLE WAR, where we’re asking you to vote to decide who the best-dressed rapper of all-time is. Right now (in Round 1), there are a whopping 64 rappers competing for the belt (click here to register and begin voting if you haven’t already).

We tried our best to represent a diverse cross-section of different regions and styles of dress, from Cam’ron’s pink Harlem style to Snoop’s blue crip clothes. Almost all of hip-hop’s heavyweights are represented, but there were a few big names who didn’t make the cut. We think they’re all great rappers, but we agreed that they didn’t deserve to be recognized for their fashion sense. Read on to find out why we left out folks like Eminem, Ludacris and more…

EMINEM
Despite being the most famous (and arguably the best) rapper in the entire world, Slim Shady never developed a superstar fashion sense to match. Even with all that money, Em was never really able to move past his overwhelmingly generic Jordan sweatsuit and white Tee look. Also, one thing in racial relations that definitely hasn’t changed since Obama’s election: white boys still look corny in du-rags. Sorry.

LUDACRIS
It’s not that Luda is a bad dresser per se (okay, sometimes he is), it’s just that he’s always been more of a fashion follower than a trendsetter. Despite being one of the most consistent hitmakers in hip-hop and one of the most lyrical mouths of the south, Luda has never found a look that really works for him. Maybe he should stick to the Hollywood-friendly formal wear he’s been rocking lately, because his ability to keep up with hip-hop fashion trends has always been questionable.

TWISTA
The Tung Twista might rap fast, but he’s a little slow when it comes to dressing well. Too often, his outfits cross the line from outrageous to just ugly. Also, if you’re standing next to Don Magic Juan and you’re the crazy looking one…that really says something.

DR. DRE
The good Doctor might be the greatest producer of all time, but he’s one of hip-hop’s most boring dressers. Sure, he looked pretty cool back in his NWA days, but he was basically just sticking to the uniform established by Eazy-E. Since then, Dre manages to look a little uncomfortable no matter what he has on, kind of like an alien wearing clothes for the first time.

SOULJA BOY
It’s not that Soulja Boy has wack style (although we’re sure some of you might disagree with that statement). What’s the real reason he wasn’t included in STYLE WAR? He’s too young, people! You’ll notice that almost everyone featured in the contest put out albums before 2007. To recognize the new generation of MCs—including Soulja Boy, Kid Cudi, Plies, Wale and more—we’ll be holding a special vote next week to decide the Best Dressed New Rapper. Stay tuned!
