When Sneaker Brands Get “Inspired By” Creative Recreation

Did you catch the new Topman footwear leak this week? It features a sneaker that looks strangely similar to a Creative Recreation Dicoco Hi. Hmmm. Topman, we love you, but come on, this is not fair. You can’t just copy a sneaker and put it on sale for cheap. Creative Rec has a brand identity, and while they might not be big enough to come at you with a team of snarling lawyers, that doesn’t mean you can go in and take its designs.

All sneaker companies get ripped off (ever see fake AF1s in the hood?), but when a big company does it, it just looks bad. Hit the jump for other brands who have produced strangely similar kicks to Creative Rec. Yup, we see you…

• The head honchos over at 310 were rumored to have offered the boys at CRec some $$$ for rights to the Cesario. When the bosses at Creative Recreation turned it down, 310 said something along the lines of, “That’s O.K., we’re going to do it anyway.”

Last night we hit EA Sports NCAA Football 10 pre-draft party, and when we asked a lot of the future-millionaires which sneaker brand they were feelin’ these days, the answer came back the same multiple times: Creative Recreation. It’s not like the draftees told us something we didn’t know already, but it did remind us just how much our Cali homies steadily kill it.

With warm weather rolling in, and the boats about to be in the harbors, it’s a perfect time to show you these deck-shoe-like Rocco’s. The sneakers will hit Creative Rec retailers sometime next month so pencil them in to this season’s rotation. It’s gonna be a hot fuckin’ summer.

Creative Recreation Gun Metal Cesario

Creative Recreation just updated its website with its full Summer 09 collection, so we had to get our rip-game-proper on. The new collection is broken up into CRec’s usual three categories; “Choice,” “Select,” and the more luxe “Prime”.

These gun-metal metallic Cesario’s are off the “Prime” line, so expect to pay a bit more because of the premium factor. The Summer collection will hit stores next month, but in the meantime head over to the Creative Rec website to see the full range.

Creative Recreation Ponti

Khaki-colored Creative Recs to rock with your khakis? Sounds like a bad tongue-twister. Truth is, we don’t suggest you heavy-match these Ponti’s with your Dockers, but this new colorway of the high-top sneaker makes for a good spring/summer shoe.

The perforated upper will help your foot breathe when it’s balls-hot out, and you’ll be good-to-go from the beach club to the strip club, without having to switch your kicks. Check for these in Creative Recreation stores in the next few weeks.

Creative Recreation Barney’s Dicoco

Just because they're launching a new collection called, umm Collection, Creative Rec hasn't lost focus on re-inventing their classics. For Spring 09, they're lacing the swanky-shelves of Barney's with these black-wrinkled patent leather Dicocos. Expect the price point to be a little hefty compared to regular in-line models, but bet on the patent leather being superior quality. Check for these to hit in a few weeks.

Fashion kids loved the Milano Hi when Creative Rec debuted it last season, now for Spring 09, the brand will drop the low-top version off their “Prime” collection. The first make-up that will release is this all-patent black colorway that may just bring the whole suits-with-sneakers thing back. Release info is sketchy, but we'll hit you back once these start popping up in stores in the next month or so.

The summer brought on fully perforated Kaplans, but now that it's getting brick outside, Creative Rec made the cleaned-up silhouette a little less drafty. These two colorups (hard white make-up below), fit for red-carpet events are part of C-Rec's extensive Holiday 08 collection. If you're looking to score a pair, you'll have to check ritzy-retailer Barneys next month. Classy.

Creative Recreation x DJ Irie Milano Hi

Creative Recreation tapped DJ Irie for a special edition of the brand's newly popular silhouette the Milano Hi. The Miami Heat-inspired sneaker (they’re Irie's favorite b-ball team) will debut at a red carpet toy drive and fund raising event, and then later be released at stores like Atrium, Lulu's and Shoe Gallery on December 12, carrying a price tag of $185. All sales racked up from the low-run sneaker (200 pairs total) will be donated to the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization. Give it up for the kids.

Creative Recreation Dicoco (Barney’s Exclusive)

It's hard to keep up with all the Barney's exclusives that Creative Recreation drops, but we're thinking it'll be tough to miss these Dicoco's. The half patent leather/half satin (yes, satin) high-tops are the flashiest model of all the Fall 08 Barneys’ x Crec releases and should hit the high-end retailer's shelves by the end of this month.

You know when you gut an ox and the blood spills out onto the hay?

We don’t know either, but apparently it’s a pretty deep red. Check out the latest pack from Creative Rec, the Oxblood pack.

The Ponti silo has been reserved for the skinny jeans set since Creative Rec introduced it, but with new inspiration (think classed-up Timbos), the type-casting may be put to rest.

For fall, expect a gang of boot colorups, and the brand to expand into six tiers, ranging from Classics to Prime. Look for these at Crec retailers that will be stocking Select drops, next month.

Creative Recreation Dicoco (Timberland Colorway)

Supra's not the only sneaker brand jockin' jock-in' jock-in' Timberland this fall, Creative Rec joins the all wheat and nubuck clan with this scheme on the Dicoco.

The 6-inch premium take-off is part of CRec's “Choice” division'one of nine sections the brand will offer this season. Check for these mid-to-late September at select retailers.

Creative Recreation Cesario Throwbacks

Before Creative Rec had crazy mass appeal, and apologetic tools like Terrance from 106 & Park were rocking them'the Cesario's in this tri-blue colorway put the brand on the map.

Sure Kanye wearing a similar scheme in an old NY Times article helped hook the jock-slobbers, but sneakerheads who thought outside the box knew from the jump these were bangers. This fall, C-Rec will retro the classic colorway for the first time and put out the hi and low models we all copped years ago. Class always lasts, check the low make-up after the jump.

Building on the euro-friendly black and white colorups, Creative Rec will drop another Barney's exclusive for fall in this olive green scheme.

The semi-perforated upper is tricked out in premium leather, just how swanky Barney's browsers like their kicks. Hopefully by the time these military boots for the AK-toting fashionista drop (late August/early September), we'll be out of Iraq. Wishful thinking never hurt anyone.
