Oh you’re off all-black everything? Not us. We’re sure you cycle through Chuck Taylor’s a lot, especially when it’s warmer out, but maybe save these black-on-blacks for when you’re trying to be the “dude with the really cool Chucks.” They’ll hit US stores in a few weeks, but if you want them early cop ‘em at trusted e-retailer CaliRoots now for $99.

Two stores go head-to-head on the same shoe. Vote on who you think did it better.

The footwear game is a cluttered place, and the abundance of similar silhouettes leaves us with the question: “Who did it better?” each week. So far, you’ve voted on the Yeezys vs. the Ex-O-Fits, the Valenzuela vs. the CTS, the Turinos vs. the Honjas, the Propulsion II vs. the TK Societys, and the Curb vs. the Champion.

The Converse’s Poorman’s Weapon was made popular last year by UNDFTD (it even ranked #8 on our top 10 of 2009) but with pictures of a Bodega make-up hitting the net late last week, it seems more stores are trying their hand at design on the silo. While UNDFTD kept it simple, the Bostonians added an extra flap to their sneaker. Better than the original, or is Undefeated still without an L? Check the pictures and then cast your vote below.

For its latest collaboration, Converse went the Cobain route with NY-based boutique Jean Shop on three different colorways of the One Star 74. The sneaker that first debuted in 1974 comes back in all its grungy glory, and will release already distressed and dirty. The launch event for the limited-edition sneakers will take place on December 10, at Jean Shop located at 424 West Brodway in NYC. Check out all the colorways below…
Over the last several years, it’d be fair to say that Converse has been the most conscious footwear brand about the fight against HIV and AIDS. Today, on World AIDS Day, the brand takes it’s (PRODUCT) RED initiative even further releasing these Leather Jacket Chuck Taylor All Stars for a good cause. Patched together using motorcycle jacket-inspired leather, the limited edition sneakers will hit (RED) retailers in NYC, San Francisco and London, as well as www.converse.com. The shoes cost $200, and ten percent of the wholesale price of the sneakers will benefit The Global Fund that helps to eliminate AIDS in Africa. Making a difference never looked this good.
Jordan has the Spiz’ike Boot, Converse has the Chuck Taylor boot. And we can’t front, the face lift on the 1971 silhouette came out pretty good. We can’t remember the last time a Converse collaboration with a store let us down. In the past several months we’ve seen dope make-ups with Huf and Undefeated, and now the brand keeps the consistency going with their latest mash-up with California based store Blends.

This One Star that’s part of Converse’s ongoing 1HUND(RED) Artists program will launch at special events at each store from 7pm – 10pm at Blends in San Diego on Thursday October 22, Blends in Costa Mesa Friday October 23rd and Blends in Downtown Los Angeles on October 24th. Oh, and if you’re not in the Blends area, it will also be available at select retailers after October 24.
This fall, Converse re-vamps the classic Weapon silo into a more technically-sound sneaker, aptly titled the “Weapon EVO.” Originally released in 1986, the Weapon was worn by b-ball legends Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. Expect this upgrade to the O.G to be a bit more comfortable than the one Magic and Larry wore. This Lakers-friendly colorup is now available on the Converse site for $90. Get it HERE, then stay tuned for Larry’s colorup tomorrow.

You’re probably use to seeing the Jack Purcell as a low-top, but Converse went ahead and switched the style up for this “Racearound” model. The mid-top takes the DNA of a Jack Purcell and adds quality materials like tumbled leather and suede. After being previewed on the blogs months ago, these just became available at legit e-shop Caliroots. Cop them HERE for $188.

What sneaker style are you rocking this season? Today I was wearing my worn out Converse that I bought from Hong Kong years ago, but I usually wear loafers or Diesel sneakers. I love comfortable footwear!

Vote on whether this week’s subject is “Stylin” or “Wildin” below…

What’s your summer drink? Kumquat mint mojitos from Mercer Kitchen!

Who inspires your style? My best friend Michele, she taught me how to be effortless. There shouldn’t be much thinking or the outfit turns haywire. It should be kept simple, but your own. Your outfit must scream your name, not anyone elses.

Favorite city? New York City, I can’t turn my back on it.

Dream job? Being a rich housewife like the ladies on TV.

Dream date? The most random actor from Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince… Alfie Enoch, the guy who played the wizard who fell for Hermoine.

Last book read? Mastering the Art of French Cooking by Julia Child.

Trend proof style advice for our readers? You can’t go wrong with Diesel, so a fresh white V-Neck with Diesel jeans.

Most money you ever spent on a single item of clothing? A Prada messenger bag that I bought last year

What is your favorite brand? Diesel is quite fabulous. I can wear it whenever, wherever, however!

What happens when you take a Converse Chuck Taylor and stamp it with a Comme des Garcons’ logo? The classic gets a lot cooler. This month Converse will release four sneakers as part of its Comme des Garcons’ Play collection. The brand opened the archives up and went to work on a 1950s vintage Chuck Taylor All Star that was originally produced for those serving in the U.S military. The four-pack of sneakers consists of two high-top versions and two oxford versions and comes in both black and white. Look for the sneakers to launch at Comme des Garcons stores in New York, Paris, London, Hong Kong and Seoul for $100 a pop.

Our cameras captured some hilarious moments at this all-star basketball tournament/sneaker launch

Yesterday, Complex attended the first-ever Converse Band of Ballers tournament to check out musicians hooping it up at the St. Patrick’s Youth Center in NYC. The celebration of the launch of the brand’s Converse Weapon Evo sneaker was an amiable competition between Jim Jones, Asher Roth, A-Trak, Pac Div, Matt & Kim, and Diplo, among others.

Hosted by Hot 97’s Miss Info and Peter Rosenberg with Cipha Sounds on the 1s and 2s, the event was a mix of laughs and competition, with The Jones Family coming out on top (Brrap! Brrap! Brrap!) as the winning team. In between games, we got a chance to speak with Capo and Asher about ballin’ and performance-enhancing drugs. Check out our interviews and photos from the event below…

Photos by Lavonda Manning; Interviews by Andrew Rivera and Soo-Young Kim

Jim Jones makes his grand entrance

Complex: We saw you come into the gym on a skateboard, what was the deal with that?

Jim Jones: You know, I like to have fun. I seen the kid outside on the skateboard. I told him, “Let me hold that for a second, I gotta make my grand entrance!” An entrance is always important no matter what it is—even if it’s court!

Complex: You’ve done a lot of Twittering through the game and you’ve been calling it “easy.” Has the competition been that lacking?

Jim Jones: We the underdogs. It feels easy though. We’re underdogs but we going hard. Defense is our best offense, you know.

Complex: You got a little injured there. You’re no Drake at all, but is that gonna affect your ability to dunk out here?

Jim Jones: I think I might have messed up the chances with this thigh injury. I was just trying to attempt one off the court just now and I was like, “Oh, it might be over for that dunk.”

Complex: We noticed that you’re very versatile. You played your game and then you took the coaches seat. What do you think it takes to be a good leader?

Jim Jones: To be a leader it takes poise. You gotta understand what’s going on. There’s a lot that goes with leadership but for the most part, the only way you can be a good leader is if you’re a good soldier. So you know, I been through the rank to being a good soldier. I think I was the top of my class, so with that I took my experience in being a leader. So when you see me out there on the court, I’m helping the soldiers get money.

Complex: True. Who is the most famous person you’ve played ball against?

Jim Jones: Kevin Garnett might be the most famous person I’ve ever played ball against.

Complex: And you won right?

Jim Jones: Well it was an MTV thing. We lost by like 2 points. It was me and Cam against Kev and his man.

Complex: Nice, so you and Asher both support marijuana…

Jim Jones: [Laughs.]

Complex: …and a lot of athletes use steroids. Is weed an enhancement drug for you at all?

Jim Jones: To me the haze is like Gatorade! I just took me a pull and I’m ready to play again. [Laughs.] You know what I mean? That’s a whole different game. If they wanna play that game after the ball game, then let’s play. May the best man stand.

Complex: [Laughs.] So even though you’ve been quoted as saying that Asher didn’t give you money for the “I Love College” Remix and instead just called to say thanks, can we expect another collabo track?

Jim Jones: We’re definitely going to work on another collabo. I’m in the midst of working on my album. So I’m gonna try to get him on my album, that would be dope.

Complex: Any information you can give us on the new album?

Jim Jones: Just that I’m going back home…home part 2.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————

Complex: How often do you play ball?

Asher Roth: I’m not a big baller, I do that hotshot game and maybe a little horse, but competitive basketball is a little much. There’s some real ballers out there, I’m not one of them.

Complex: Who’s the best rapper you’ve played ball against?

Asher Roth: Jim Jones.

Complex: Today?

Asher Roth: [Laughs.] Yeah. I normally don’t really get to play basketball against other rappers. Unless you count my friends, they’re rappers—sometimes.

Complex: If you could make a dream team with 3 other people, who would be in it?

Asher Roth: Kirk Hinrich, Jeff Hornacek, and Dan Majerle.

Complex: Why?

Asher Roth: ‘Cause they’re all white boy ballers that are nasty.

Complex: Do you view marijuana as an enhancement drug? Do you think they’ll count you for cheating?

Asher Roth: They’ll probably count me as cheating in a sense of, do I use it for medical? Not necessarily.

Complex: Does it make you a better player?

Asher Roth: As far as I’m concerned, the reformation of marijuana laws is something that I take seriously. I think it’s something that can stimulate the economy. So yeah, I use it for recreation, and that’s just me. But in a sense of a real political issue, even though I don’t get into politics ’cause politics is synonymous with bullshit, there’s some very real stuff with reformation of marijuana laws.

Complex: Fair enough. The Converse uniforms are pretty cool, but what’s the most embarrassing piece of clothing you’ve ever worn?

Asher Roth: I don’t really step out the house trying to make a fashion statement. I step out the house making sure I’m comfortable, so I mean fashion aficionados might make fun of some of the shit that I wear, but as long as I’m comfortable—like right now, people would bug out about thong sandals and socks.

Complex: Jimmy actually put on his Twitter that there was no way you were gonna pull anything off with your thong shoes.

Asher Roth: I’m good. I’m comfortable and that’s all that matters.
—————————————————————————————————————————————————
