This luxurious make-shift pickup truck from the land down under is the best hybrid we've seen in a while.

In case you didn’t know, Australians are some of the biggest muscle car fanatics on the planet. They have one of the best GM marquees in the world, Holden, which makes some of the most top-notch muscle cars on the road. GM has brought over a couple Holden models and made them Pontiacs, the latest being the Commodore which became the G8 sport sedan and the Ute, which is basically a new age El Camino. It’s no surprise then that this BMW M5 turned El Camino has come from the land down under.

The owner of this third generation M5 (E39) started the project in 2006 and worked on it for just under a year. Besides chopping the body and reinforcing it, he fully reworked the suspension and the engine so that the 4.9L M5 motor now puts out around 460hp. He also went over the interior, making sure the M5 Ute’s interior matched its crazy exterior. BMW fanboys may cry blasphemy, but we think it’s one of the coolest conversions we’ve seen this year. Check out more photos and a video walk through below…

After announcing it about a year ago, Volvo unveiled its ultimate factory built police car earlier today at the National Association of Police Fleet Manager's Conference in Cheltenham, England. Unlike other police cars that are outfitted once they get to the station, Volvo plans to prepare the car (pictured above) themselves and then deliver it within a few months after the order date.

The specialized V70 will come equipped with VASCAR speed detection system, a police surveillance video camera and a two dog cage as well as larger brakes and reinforced alloy wheels. We can see why police forces in the UK are excited about this come-up, but even with Volvo delivering ready to go cop cars, there are cooler ones already in use.

With gas stuck on high and fall on the way, leave the drop tops behind and check out our favorite tiny-trucks.

Sorry to break it to you, but summer’s over. It’s time to garage the drop top and hop into something that can handle everything fall and winter can throw at it. Something with four wheel drive, a little lift and some off-road capabilities.

We know that because of the current gas crisis, everyone’s pushing crossovers instead SUVs, but if you look closely you’ll see that there are a number of compact SUVs that are worth some consideration. To help you out, before we become fully immersed in the cold weather months and start planning ski trips to Vermont, we picked 5 of our favorite compact SUV’s…

MERCURY MARINER

Price:$25,425
Power:240hp; 233 lb-ft, 3.0L V6
MPG: 17 city/24 hwy

No one really knows how or why Mercury is still around. Now more than ever they seem to just re-badge Ford models and hawk ‘em as their own. But when compared to the Ford Escape, the Mariner seems to be that much better. Especially the VOGA edition. It’s hard to put your finger on exactly what it is that makes it better, but it is. It may be the higher end materials used or the updated interior, whatever it is, the driving experience is different. Though we’re not really down with all white leather seats, it feels more luxe than a Lincoln. Maybe they should re-badge it?

TOYOTA RAV4

Price: $27,070
Power:269 hp; 246 lb.-ft, 3.5L V6
MPG: 19 city/26 hwy

In their quest to become more and more Americanized, Toyota’s trucks and SUVs have grown to F-150, Expedition proportions. In turn, their smallest SUV, the Rav4 has also grown up over the years. Which is a shame saying that the Rav4 kicked off the whole compact SUV market back in 1996. But even with its added girth (pause), it’s still on of the best SUVs on the market today. It looks like a mini Land Cruiser, can comfortably seat 6 dudes and has hill start and downhill assist control in case you find yourself off the beaten path.

BMW X-3

Price: $38,600
Power:260hp; 225 lb.-ft 3.0L Inline 6
MPG: 17 city/24 mpg

Though it really didn’t hurt their sales, those in the rap world took heed when Jay Z declared the X5 a baby mama mobile. So you may think that the X3 would totally off-limits, right? GTFOH. Stop jockin’ Jay and get a life. The X3, like the X5, is dope. Sure, it may seem a little feminine, but in a smaller, more nimble package you still get BMW fit and finish, a 260hp 6 cylinder engine, BMW’s x Drive intelligent all-wheel drive system and a 6 speed sport transmission with paddle shifters. How feminine is that?

ACURA RDX

Price: $33,695
Power:240hp; 260 lb.-ft 2.3L Turbocharged inline four
MPG: 17 city/22 hwy

For their first compact SUV, Acura went in with the features. On top of their Super Handling All Wheel Drive system, they threw in their first ever turbocharged engine, meaning it’ll be just as comfortable in Manchester, Vermont during ski-season as it would be in sliding into a parking spot in Soho. It may just be a CR-V with a suit on, but it’s a damn good suit.

LAND ROVER LR2

Price:$35,985
Power: 230hp; 234 lb.-ft. 3.2L V6
MPG: 16 city/23 hwy

When it comes to the SUV game, nothing beats Land Rover. We know this, you know this. They infuse the same mixture of high-class build quality and off-road capabilities, so you know it’s ready for anything. Not to mention it gets the best gas mileage out of any Land Rover, with 22 mpg.

There's no need to drop stacks on a new paint job when you can just give your whip in 3M's shiny white tape.

After you choose which car to buy, the hardest decision is picking out the color. Of course you want to get something that’s in style at the moment, but will remain cool through a number of different trend changes, because (good) paint jobs are expensive. The owner of this BMW 335i found the perfect solution for those of you ballin’ on a budget: wrapping your car…

It’s mostly seen on rap promo vans, but many aftermarket tuners have begun wrapping their cars as an alternative to droppin’ Gs at a paint shop. After seeing the color white come back in style heavy in his native Germany, the owner of this black Bimmer coupe decided to wrap (or foil) it with 3M’s shiny white tape. Besides changing up the color, the tape will also protect the car’s original paint for a couple years. It’ll also make it easy for homie to evade the cops if need be. See photos of the finished product below.

The good volks at BMW recently opened a museum next to their HQ in Munich, and one of the displays is a kinetic sculpture. Consisting of 714 metal spheres attached to the ceiling by string, the sculpture moves constantly through a variety of shapes, before settling on the silhouette of a classic BMW. We admit it sounded weird to us at first too, but it’s actually pretty cool (despite the New Agey music that’s piped in). Check the video after the jump.

BMW seems to always be ahead of the curve in comparison to other luxury cars, but their new whip, the GINA Light Visionary Model, may just change the whip game altogether.

What's so special about GINA is that the body of the car, which is usually made from a metal body, is replaced with highly durable and expansion-resistant fabric that's sprawled across a metal wire structure. Besides the obvious advantage of less dings in your paint, the cloth-covering can be shifted by the driver so the car takes on new shapes. Your suicide doors are old news, playa. To get the full specs on the new Beamer, check the video after the jump.

A Danish artist replaced the frame from BMW's H2R hydrogen car with a shell of ice in this new German exhibit.

Today in Munich, the first ever ice car went on display at the Pinakothek der Moderne museum. Created by Danish artist Olafur Eliasson, the installation called “Your Mobile Expectations” is housed in a refrigerated room within the museum. The artist removed the frame from BMW’s Hydrogen-powered H2R concept car and replaced it with an ice covered shell. The yellow glow at the bottom makes a nice effect that would fit right in on Kanye’s Glow In The Dark Tour. The project will be on display until July 20. See a video of the marvel below.
