WHY WE COSIGN: What DQM and UNFTD are to sneaker stores, Context Clothing is to denim shops. Not satisfied with just selling denim, these guys opted to head down the “boutique” path and make the in-store experience just as cool as the product. Much like sneakerheads, denim connoisseurs are often interested in the story behind the final product as much as the item itself. Opened in 2004, South Willard was just what 3rd Street in L.A needed. The area was well-known for mom and pop stores, so avid surfer Ryan Conder and Danielle Kays flipped the script. “We felt we there was a need for the kinds of clothes we were interested in that were not being represented in Los Angeles,” said Conder.
South Willard’s style is heavily European and Japanese influenced and carries A.P.C, Band of Outsiders, Common Projects, Dries Van Noten, Patrik Ervell, Quoddy, Raf Simons, and Stephan Schneider. For the brand’s showing at September’s Fashion Week, founder (and former Hollywood agent) Scott Sternberg put together videos of Hamilton, Kirsten Dunst and Max Minghella prancing around while wearing his line of smartly detailed, slim-cut pieces.
