Audi has a series of “Audi Driving Experiences” around the globe where Audi consumers can participate in single or multiple-day tours to either learn racing or car control techniques from professional drivers. In the case of the above video, our instructor was a former professional rally car driver who now teaches people how to drive on ice, everything from high-speed braking to navigating hairpin turns. Check out our video where instructor Harald Büttner takes us through the proper technique for drifting an Audi A4 Quattro on ice.

Automakers love dissing the competition in their TV ads. Watch the most memorable clips where they let it all out. No shots!

Who doesn’t love a good beef? Whatever the forum, there’s nothing better than seeing some open competition. Especially when that forum is the land of TV commercials. Last week, Audi dropped their “Friendly Competition” commercial to show how much better they’re doing than their fellow German automotive rival BMW. To the uninitiated this may seem crazy—so blatantly going at a rival in an ad—but Audi’s been doing this, and honestly, that wasn’t even their best one! And lately it seems every car maker has an itchy trigger finger, as we’ve seen a number of them taking shots at each other in commercials over the past few years. Take a look below to see five of our favorites.

#5. Hyundai vs Lexus
• Everyone loves going at Lexus. Before their Genesis hit the block and with it the string of awesome commercials, Hyundai thought it wise to compare their Sonata sedan to Lexus’ top of the line, boy body sedan, the LS series, which is bold because the Sonata is no where near as good as a Lexus LS. But it showed Hyundai is a ballsy company. And we like balls. [II].

—————————————————————————————————————————————————–

#4: Buick vs. Lexus
• As one of the brands General Motor’s decided to keep alive, Buick needed a product that told customers (and investors) that one of America’s most storied brands had plans to stick around for a while. That came in the form of the 2010 LaCrosse. A spacious, luxurious, albeit tame, mid-sized sedan, GM pitted it squarely against the luxury brand that made the most popular tame mid-sized luxury sedan, Lexus. In this ad, the B-Boys take an odd but bold approach: they don’t just call out Lexus by name, they show that their car is every bit <strike>the same</strike> as luxurious by showing every detail of the car. Will Lexus buyers go for a Buick?

—————————————————————————————————————————————————–

#4: Chevrolet vs. Ford
• The truck divisions of the three American car companies have been going at each others necks in commercials since the 70s. But recently, Chevy has been going at EVERYONE: Dodge, Honda, Toyota, and in this ad, Ford. Instead of comparing the actual mechanical features like towing capacity, total power, and MPG of the Ford F-150 and the Chevy Silverado, like they do in this ad, they make fun of it for having luxuries such a step ladder. We’re not “truckers” but we wouldn’t mind having a step ladder. Does that make us bitch-made?

—————————————————————————————————————————————————–

#2: BMW vs. Audi
• Over the past few years, Audi has been on a mission to topple the other two German auto makers, BMW and Mercedes-Benz. And suffice to say, they have a rough road a head of them. To smooth the course, they started airing ads and mini movies that took shots at those two brands (and Lexus, of course), and none of them said a word. Until this. BMW made an ad to show how excited BMW owners are to get into their cars. Cool. Then they released a “part 2″ that showed a guy driving a car with four rings on the front trying to get into his car. Can someone say, shots returned?

—————————————————————————————————————————————————–

#1: Audi vs. BMW, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari
• Audi is the king of taking shots in commercials. They’re like Apple in that regard. They have no problem going at anyone. In this ad they take shots at Lexus, BMW, Mercedes-Benz (all of whom they’ve gone at individually) and Ferrari. Ferrari! Who takes shots at Ferrari?! Audi does.

Audi's newest concept paints and green (and awesome) future for sports cars.

Audi may be heavy in the diesel game, but for the future of their high performance cars, it seems they’re hedging their bets on electric drive. We thought the R8 V12 TDI was going to shine as Audi’s green performance contender, but at the ‘09 Frankfurt Auto Show, they showed off their R8 based e-Tron concept: An all-electric sports cars with more torque than three Bugatti Veryon’s! Nothing will replace the experience of driving a regular, gas burning sports car, but if Audi actually builds this thing, we just may change our tune. Read on to find out why…

EXTERIOR: It’s obvious upon first glance that the e-Tron is based on Audi’s two-door sports car, the R8. If the R8 had never come out, this thing would be futuristic as all hell, but now, we wouldn’t be surprised or shocked to see it in front of a San Francisco Starbucks. That said, there are major differences. The seams and ends are nipped and tucked to give it a more slick look: since it’s all electric, there’s no need for all the vents and air ducts, making it appear more streamlined. Then there’s the wire grill that matches the multi-spoke wheels that really gives the car an iRobot look. The coolest part to us, though, is the adaptation and advancement of Audi’s LED lighting system. Not only do they look sick, they’re loaded with special features. Say you’re driving and it starts to rain heavily, the lights will automatically adjust their angle and brightness to help you wade through the rain. Or, if, for whatever reason, you’re turning into a dark alley, the lights will reconfigure themselves to light the corner before you turn around it.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

INTERIOR: Removing all the components of a conventional internal combustion engine frees up a lot of space. The Audi engineers took advantage of all that extra space by making the two-door sports coupe way more spacious inside. Less is more with the Audi e-Tron. There are no extraneous switches and buttons on the dash—all you see is the knob control for Audi’s Multi Media Interface (MMI) and some buttons on the steering wheel. Everything is built to center around the driver. In place of the dials and gauges now rests a screen that will display all the info a driver needs, while a traditional speedo sits to drivers right and a battery/energy gauge sits to left. Audi intends for you to keep your eyes right where they should be.
————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

DRIVETRAIN: The big news about the e-Tron is its all-electric drivetrain. Comprised of four electric motors—one attached to each wheel—that puts out a combined 313 hp and an unreal 3318 lb-ft of torque! (the Bugatti Veyron, the most powerful road car only has 922 lb-ft of torque) All that allows it to hit 60 mph in around 4.8 seconds (est). However, if you attempt to hit that zero to 60 mph time and you’re trip will be much shorter than the claimed 154 miles. To slow this e-beast, it’s been outfitted with ceramic brakes that, like many hybrids and other electric cars, reuse energy lost when braking.
————————————————————————————————————————————————————-
Super Bowl commercials are the stuff of legend. They’re watched just as closely, and sometimes closer, than the game itself. On top of all the beer and Go Daddy.com commercials we were paying heavy attention to the automotive commercials. Why? We wanted to see what new ways the car companies thought of to sell us cars in these ever so trying times. Audi choose to tout their TDI clean diesel technology, while Kia, in one of our favorite ads ever, choose to play up the cheap price of its Sorento SUV. But how do those stack up against the car commercials from years past? We dug through the archives to find our 10 favorite Super Bowl car commercials of all time. Don’t see one of your favorites, holler at us in the comments. Check all of ‘em out below…

Check out our full review of Audi's new crossover CUV, which just launched in the U.S.

We’ve test-driven quite a few Audis over the last few years, but—word to Goldilocks—something about the Audi Q5 feels just right. Or is it just a sign of age that we’re fawning over a compact CUV? Either way, the car that Audi calls “segment-redefining” is out to take over the Lexus RX/BMW X3/Mercedes-Benz GLK market, and judging from Audi’s recession-defying 2008 sales numbers, we wouldn’t bet against it. Read on for our review of the Audi Q5…

PRICE: (base) $37,200; (loaded) $52,475

SPECS:
Engine: 270hp, 3.2L V6 DOHC engine w/ FSI Direct Injection
MPG: 18 city/22 mpg

RIDE:
We had a chance to drive the Q5 over car-commercial-worthy roads in the hills of Pennsylvania. The Q5 feels sturdy while remaining deft enough to handle unpredictable curves at speed. (Hence, crossover CUV, right?) On the freeway, the V6 has more than enough kick to bullet past the slow and the curious. The Q5 also offers four switchable operating modes—Comfort, Automatic, Dynamic and Individual—which allegedly affect things like steering, transmission shift characteristics and engine response. Since we always left it at “Automatic,” we’ll have to take Audi’s word. It certainly sounds like a cool option.

EXTERIOR:
If the Q5 is Manny Pacquiao—you know, small but strong, engaging but menacing, etc.—then the front grille is Pac-Man’s left hook. Impactful. We’ve always loved Audi’s trademark grille but it looks especially fresh on the Q5 because if its lean, muscular physique. Should we pause that? Nah. We prefer the overall appearance of the Q5 to its main competitors, simply because it looks like a proper Audi, not a shrunken-down version of another car.

INTERIOR:
The insides of the Q5 are basically everything you’d expect from an Audi. From the moment you sit down in the driver’s seat, you feel the luxury. The new third-generation Multi-Media Interface (MMI) will be familiar to anyone who’s driven an Audi, but new features include 3-D navigation that is one of the best we’ve ever used (though an “along the route” option would’ve been nice). The display screen is big and clear, the cockpit is ergonomically perfect and the joystick controls (in both the console and the steering wheel) are very intuitive. The voice-command system—the navigation is programmed to respond to basic statements like “I need money” or “I’m hungry”—is cool in theory but a little gimmicky in execution. Way better than Ford Sync though.

AUDIO:
The “Prestige” package comes with an aptly-named Bang & Olufsen 14-speaker sound system—yep, it bangs. Thankfully, the Q5 also comes with a handy iPod cable in the glove compartment (it’s about time!) for seamless integration with the in-dash console. Unlike other iPod-auto integration systems we’ve used, the Q5 instantly recognizes all of your music and allows you to speed-search your entire catalogue. Using the steering-wheel controls to comb through a 60GB iPod while driving may not be the safest move, but it sure kills time in traffic.

WHIP APPEAL:
The Q5 is the type of car that doesn’t elicit double-takes so much as long, measured, admiring looks from grown-ass adults. Like, “I want to marry that!” instead of “I want to fuck!” It has a presence, this one.

ONE MORE THING:
For an extra $500, Audi offers “side assist”: a sensor light on each rearview mirror that goes on when a car is in your blind spot. Perfect for chronic cutter-offers. You know who you are. Assholes.

SUMMARY: We love pretty much everything about the Q5, but we also pretty much love everything from Audi. It’s not the most budget-friendly choice but for a crossover CUV, it’s the Complex choice.

RATING: 4.5/5
