Congratulations. You made it through another week. Having five new songs to download every day makes it a little easier, doesn’t it? The blogs were a little quiet today, but we still came through with a handful of records worth checking out. You know the drill. Keep reading to start listening…

Our cameras captured some hilarious moments at this all-star basketball tournament/sneaker launch

Yesterday, Complex attended the first-ever Converse Band of Ballers tournament to check out musicians hooping it up at the St. Patrick’s Youth Center in NYC. The celebration of the launch of the brand’s Converse Weapon Evo sneaker was an amiable competition between Jim Jones, Asher Roth, A-Trak, Pac Div, Matt & Kim, and Diplo, among others.

Hosted by Hot 97’s Miss Info and Peter Rosenberg with Cipha Sounds on the 1s and 2s, the event was a mix of laughs and competition, with The Jones Family coming out on top (Brrap! Brrap! Brrap!) as the winning team. In between games, we got a chance to speak with Capo and Asher about ballin’ and performance-enhancing drugs. Check out our interviews and photos from the event below…

Photos by Lavonda Manning; Interviews by Andrew Rivera and Soo-Young Kim

Jim Jones makes his grand entrance

Complex: We saw you come into the gym on a skateboard, what was the deal with that?

Jim Jones: You know, I like to have fun. I seen the kid outside on the skateboard. I told him, “Let me hold that for a second, I gotta make my grand entrance!” An entrance is always important no matter what it is—even if it’s court!

Complex: You’ve done a lot of Twittering through the game and you’ve been calling it “easy.” Has the competition been that lacking?

Jim Jones: We the underdogs. It feels easy though. We’re underdogs but we going hard. Defense is our best offense, you know.

Complex: You got a little injured there. You’re no Drake at all, but is that gonna affect your ability to dunk out here?

Jim Jones: I think I might have messed up the chances with this thigh injury. I was just trying to attempt one off the court just now and I was like, “Oh, it might be over for that dunk.”

Complex: We noticed that you’re very versatile. You played your game and then you took the coaches seat. What do you think it takes to be a good leader?

Jim Jones: To be a leader it takes poise. You gotta understand what’s going on. There’s a lot that goes with leadership but for the most part, the only way you can be a good leader is if you’re a good soldier. So you know, I been through the rank to being a good soldier. I think I was the top of my class, so with that I took my experience in being a leader. So when you see me out there on the court, I’m helping the soldiers get money.

Complex: True. Who is the most famous person you’ve played ball against?

Jim Jones: Kevin Garnett might be the most famous person I’ve ever played ball against.

Complex: And you won right?

Jim Jones: Well it was an MTV thing. We lost by like 2 points. It was me and Cam against Kev and his man.

Complex: Nice, so you and Asher both support marijuana…

Jim Jones: [Laughs.]

Complex: …and a lot of athletes use steroids. Is weed an enhancement drug for you at all?

Jim Jones: To me the haze is like Gatorade! I just took me a pull and I’m ready to play again. [Laughs.] You know what I mean? That’s a whole different game. If they wanna play that game after the ball game, then let’s play. May the best man stand.

Complex: [Laughs.] So even though you’ve been quoted as saying that Asher didn’t give you money for the “I Love College” Remix and instead just called to say thanks, can we expect another collabo track?

Jim Jones: We’re definitely going to work on another collabo. I’m in the midst of working on my album. So I’m gonna try to get him on my album, that would be dope.

Complex: Any information you can give us on the new album?

Jim Jones: Just that I’m going back home…home part 2.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————

Complex: How often do you play ball?

Asher Roth: I’m not a big baller, I do that hotshot game and maybe a little horse, but competitive basketball is a little much. There’s some real ballers out there, I’m not one of them.

Complex: Who’s the best rapper you’ve played ball against?

Asher Roth: Jim Jones.

Complex: Today?

Asher Roth: [Laughs.] Yeah. I normally don’t really get to play basketball against other rappers. Unless you count my friends, they’re rappers—sometimes.

Complex: If you could make a dream team with 3 other people, who would be in it?

Asher Roth: Kirk Hinrich, Jeff Hornacek, and Dan Majerle.

Complex: Why?

Asher Roth: ‘Cause they’re all white boy ballers that are nasty.

Complex: Do you view marijuana as an enhancement drug? Do you think they’ll count you for cheating?

Asher Roth: They’ll probably count me as cheating in a sense of, do I use it for medical? Not necessarily.

Complex: Does it make you a better player?

Asher Roth: As far as I’m concerned, the reformation of marijuana laws is something that I take seriously. I think it’s something that can stimulate the economy. So yeah, I use it for recreation, and that’s just me. But in a sense of a real political issue, even though I don’t get into politics ’cause politics is synonymous with bullshit, there’s some very real stuff with reformation of marijuana laws.

Complex: Fair enough. The Converse uniforms are pretty cool, but what’s the most embarrassing piece of clothing you’ve ever worn?

Asher Roth: I don’t really step out the house trying to make a fashion statement. I step out the house making sure I’m comfortable, so I mean fashion aficionados might make fun of some of the shit that I wear, but as long as I’m comfortable—like right now, people would bug out about thong sandals and socks.

Complex: Jimmy actually put on his Twitter that there was no way you were gonna pull anything off with your thong shoes.

Asher Roth: I’m good. I’m comfortable and that’s all that matters.
—————————————————————————————————————————————————

Asher Roth is a funny dude—right after getting dissed by reality TV star Spencer Pratt in our recent interview, the news broke that Asher has been seen around town with Spencer’s sister. LOL! That explains a lot.

Luckily, the rapper had the same sense of humor when it came time to shoot a fashion feature for Complex’s June/July 2009 issue. In the shoot, called “Gentleman of Leisure,” Asher dons some cool preppy summertime clothes while engaging in some behavior that would raise eyebrows at the country club.

The Hills villain has some tough talk for your favorite MCs in this exclusive interview.

When it comes to reality TV, there’s no bigger rabble-rouser than Spencer Pratt. Fully embracing his role as The Hills P.E. #1, Pratt has parlayed his notoriety into becoming a tabloid staple. Although Complex has never been into the gossip-game, we were kinda psyched when we heard SP (The Ghost) was getting into rapping and—it’s Spencer, after all—throwing some of your favorite artists under the bus. (Sorry, Asher.)

Never one to stir the pot (ah ha!), we spoke to Spencer while he was on his way to shoot guns with wifey Heidi—good practice for an aspiring MC. Read on to see how he and his wifey Heidi plan to outdo Jay-Z and Beyoncé, why Roth doesn’t stand a chance against him, and how Brody as a hypeman would damage his street cred…

Listen To Spencer’s new song “I’m A Celebrity”:

Interview by Joe La Puma

Complex: What’s going on man, how are things?

Spencer Pratt: The usual, just another amazing day in my life. On the way to the gun range with my wife, ready to go fire off some hollow points out of the 19…

Complex: Ha, OK. So you made headlines yesterday talking about Asher Roth, saying he lacks swag. If you had to battle Asher Roth, what would you use against him?

Spencer Pratt: I mean, the fact that I’m so paid, and he’s broke [laughs]. Simple as that. That’s my whole point, being that I’m fly with tons of money, and he doesn’t have that yet. I’m sure he’ll have a lot more swag in three years if he keeps selling.

Complex: You also said, “I’m like the white Jay-Z.” Would you consider Heidi the white Beyoncé?

Spencer Pratt: A little bit more than the white Beyoncé. Beyoncé had to be built by a group like Destiny’s Child, but Heidi shines solo. I’ll actually give you an exclusive: I could guarantee you Speidi’s [Spencer and Heidi's] “Bonnie & Clyde” version is going to stunt on Jay and B’s version.

Complex: Wow. Is that song going to happen?

Spencer Pratt: Yes. Steve Morales is already working on the track. That’s my Puerto Rican guru on the beat.

Complex: I saw that you’re trying to reach out to OJ Da Juiceman for him to get a verse on a Morales-produced track.

Spencer Pratt: Yeah, I’m trying to get him on my first real single because “I’m A Celebrity” is not my single. That’s just my marketing tool for the show. My first single, I just want to have me, Gucci Mane, and OJ Da Juiceman. It’ll be the flyest song in the game. I’m going to track them down, that’s my priority today.

Complex: Who’s rapping career would you use as a blueprint for yourself?

Spencer Pratt: I think I’m the future of hip-hop. You know, I feel bad for saying that. That’s unfortunate, but that’s a fact. You can’t compare my model of hip-hop with what I’m about to come out with versus anything in the game. You know I’ll take the Diddy route. I’m not a lyrical MC, I’m just like Diddy. Look what it did for him? He is still balling.

Complex: I know you said that you’re trying to infiltrate the ringtone game…

Spencer Pratt: Yeah. People are not even going to have time to listen to radio in their cars because they are going to be talking on their phones or twittering, or BBM’ing. So I feel like the only time people are going to hear music is when your phone rings, so that’s the whole market I’m going after. I don’t care about the clubs, I don’t care about the radio, all I care about is getting my digital downloads like Soulja Boy.

Complex: There’s a lot of money to be made in that…

Spencer Pratt: I think it’s only going to multiply in the next ten years. There are more people with cell phones in the world than any other thing on the planet. There are billions of cell phones. There’s not not billions of radios.

Complex: Now, Jay-Z had Memphis Bleek has a hypeman. Would Brody Jenner be your hypeman?

Spencer Pratt: Nah. A person who has a show called Bromance can’t be in on this clique.

Complex: You think that would hurt street cred?

Spencer Pratt: The Bromance show definitely hurts my street cred, so I’ll definitely distance myself from Brody as a hypeman. I’ll be pretty much be the first rapper/hypeman. I would take on both roles. I would wear both shoes. I’ll hype myself before I start rapping. I’ll get on the mic and be like, “Who is hotter than me in the game? No one.”

Complex: Interesting…

Spencer Pratt: The bottom line is, if every single platinum song right now wasn’t auto-tuned, then I would be like, “I can’t be a rapper.” The fact that I could get up to perfect pitch just like Kanye West now, and T-Pain, it’s an even playing field. I don’t have to have talent. I just need to have auto-tune and be allowed to have the hottest track in the game, and my swag.

Complex: Obviously you twitter a lot. Which rapper do you think has the most interesting tweets?

Spencer Pratt: I would say Diddy is the most interesting Twitter-er. I definitely will follow the hip-hop circle now that I have infiltrated the game, just so that I can be aware of my rivals and what my competitors are doing. But, I’m not really interested in anybody, that’s why I started rapping. I’m still a fan of Tupac. That’s the only rapper that I’m still like, “Oh! Tupac!” Besides Gucci, and Juiceman, I’m not really excited about anybody in the game. I just love Gucci and Juice because they just have too much swag that they don’t know what to do with themselves.

Complex: Now obviously, in the previous episode of The Hills, you kind of Kufi smacked your sister’s ex-boyfriend, Cameron. Are you prepared in case someone comes at you sideways?

Spencer Pratt: I mean, I’ve been training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu all my life. Boxing, kickboxing, you know. I’m definitely not a fighter, but I defend my honor.

We got the "I Love College" MC to critique the fashion sense of some of his fellow caucasian rappers. See who made the grade.

Last Friday, Asher Roth came through Complex headquarters while on a last-minute press tour for his debut album, Asleep in the Bread Aisle, which hits stores today. Instead of churning out an unimaginative Q&A we decided to resurrect one of our favorite columns, “Kanye’s Fashion Beatdowns”—but this time have A. Roth critique the fashion sense of other white rappers.

Asher broke down each Caucasoid MC’s outfit and rated it based on how appropriate it would be at the following places: 1) a country club; 2) a freestyle cipher at McDonald’s; 3) at the mall; and 4) The BET Awards. Check what RAWTH had to say about Pete Nice , Eminem, Alchemist, Brian Austin Green, Marky Mark and more, then peep a behind-the-scenes video of Asher’s beatdowns at the end of the click-through…

PETE NICE (right)

Asher says: I can’t tell what shoes he got on, [but] I’m not mad at this outfit, I’m feeling the layers, I’m feeling the shades. Are those pajama pants? You know, this is definitely a dress-for-comfort outfit.

• Country club: 4/5 At the country club this is a four only because I can’t tell if they’re shorts or not, but it looks like he’s got golf-esque shoes, so of all of them, it’s definitely a country-club outfit.
• Freestyle cipher at McDonald’s: 4/5 This is actually a good all-around outfit for the McDonald’s.
• Mall: 4/5 This is perfect.
• The BET Awards: 4/5 Pete Nice did a good job with rocking a universal outfit as far as, Hey I’m going to rock this, I’m comfortable and at the same time I can go anywhere in this.

Superstars have started selling their albums through Best Buy or Target. Maybe these hip-hop rookies can try cutting deals with some smaller stores.

Well, it’s official: Prince is a genius. After the Eagles and AC/DC posted huge numbers last year releasing albums exclusively through a Walmart, Prince signed on to release a three-album set for sale only at Target. Mark our words: he’ll be platinum by June.

The trend got us thinking that some of these struggling rookie rappers could benefit from the strategy. Granted, big dog retailers like Best Buy and Target probably won’t cut exclusive deals with newcomers like Kid Cudi and Asher Roth, but we thought of some less obvious stores that might jump at the chance. Read on to see marketing plans for ten of our favorite up-and-coming MCs…

Read our interview with the white hot MC to get his take on John Brown, Eminem, Jay-Z and why hip-hop has moved out of the city.

Whether or not you relate to his All-American suburbanite persona, it's been hard to ignore Asher Roth lately. After signing with Steve Rifkind’s SRC Records (home to Akon and Wu-Tang), the white boy from Morrisville, PA made a big splash last month with his Don Cannon and DJ Drama assisted mixtape The Greenhouse Effect.

His voice and punchline-heavy flow might bear some similarity to that of a certain Detroit rapper from 8 Mile, but Roth has managed to establish a unique persona with his recent remakes of Lil Wayne's “A Milli” and Jay-Z’s “Roc Boys.” We spoke with Asher while he was in Chicago en route to working with The Cool Kids. In this exclusive interview, Asher talks about growing up on Dave Matthews, impressing Jay-Z, and why he’s not worried about his suburban rap rival John Brown.

Interview by Joe La Puma

Complex: Now that the Greenhouse Effect mixtape is out, what are you working on?

Asher Roth: We're really in album mode right now. The studio album is looking like the start of the year, around February, but we'll see how that plays out. I'm working with the Cool Kids, I'm actually in the studio with them right now and Devin The Dude. There are a couple other surprises, but I'll keep those as surprises. You can expect some real, real, cool, people, man. And people who do what they do and do it well.

Complex: Is it true that you moved to Atlanta?

Asher Roth: I moved to Atlanta, Entourage style, with three of my buddies. [I] grabbed a place and everything like that, and set up shop in the A. It's been great so far. You know, I'm a little white guy, real fair skinned, so as far as the dog days of summer go, it's more or less in the house with the AC. But Georgia is great, man. Atlanta's cool because it’s a city with trees and I dig that.

Complex: Have you been to Magic City or any of the strip clubs down there?

Asher Roth: Not yet. I hear about them all the time; Claremont Lounge and Magic City. I have yet to, but I don't think I'll leave Georgia for good until I do.

Complex: What did you major in when you were in college?

Asher Roth: I was in elementary education, actually. I still have a passion to teach. I find the little ones to be pretty enlightening and real honest and pure. Not conformed by society, TV and things like that yet.

Complex: Given rap's current economic woes, do you think it was a smart move to leave college early?

Asher Roth: I mean, definitely. I think when you get an opportunity like one that was presented to me, that's a chance of a lifetime. You know, at the same time I was in school, I was more or less in school to be in school. Leaving school has actually helped me so much, because I'm really finding out who I am and what I really care about. It's going to be interesting because I still have a passion to go back to school.

Complex: How do you feel about John Brown's comments where he implies that you copied his suburban persona?

Asher Roth: Man, that's water under the to bridge to me. I mean, it's just obvious that rap is in the suburbs now. And I'm not going to be anything that I'm not. I think it's very obvious that I am who I am. I think rap is in the burbs and that's that.

Complex: Why do you think that rap has been so present in the burbs?

Asher Roth: Well, it's interesting because, you know, I've been listening to hip-hop since 7th grade. It's been interesting because listening to rap and being a fan first, when I'm listening, there isn't people who are speaking stuff that I live. I'm like, “Wow I buy these hip-hop CDs.” And a lot of people that look just like me buy these hip-hop CDs and come from where I come from. So that's kind of why I started doing it, because I had a passion for hip-hop and it was like, “Yo, no one is doing what I do, so I'll do it.” I don't want to do the whole “should of, could of, would of” stuff. I have a real passion for it, and I definitely think the suburban kids are buying hip-hop. It’s always been in the burbs for the most part.

Complex: Now who's the toughest dude in the game that you've hung out with thus far?

Asher Roth: I mean, to be honest with you, the dude that's kind of like, “Whoa”…It was actually my dude Steve Rifkin. Like, the first time I met him I was like, “Man, this dude is going to slap me across the face.” Steve Rifkind’s a bulldog, but if you get to know him, he’s a real big homie. For the most part everyone's pretty cool, man. I don't think anybody wants to be like “Yo, don't ever look at me wrong.” I don't think people want to be ever be angry like that.

Complex: If it came down to it, what rapper do you think you can beat in a fistfight?

Asher Roth: [Laughs] To beat in a fistfight? I don't know man. I'm 5-10, but a buck forty-five so I don't know about a fistfight. Maybe a submission hold'that's where I stand my chance. But no, man'I'm a lover not a fighter for the most part.

Complex: Eminem's been kind of M.I.A lately. Do you think that he’s threatened by new artists like yourself?

Asher Roth: Nah, I don't think Eminem is threatened. I think that he's one of the best that has ever done it. I think that Em is just living his life. You know, he's an adult now; he's got responsibilities that I don't have. I don't have a child to raise and a family to take care of. I'm sure he's going to come back out because he has a passion for the music just like everybody else. But you know, that's just what happens when you get older. When you have other responsibilities in life.

Complex: A lot of people have pointed out that there are similarities between you and Em. If he came back and called you out, how would you deal with it?

Asher Roth: Him and I are different artists. I think the music's going to portray that as time goes on. The comparisons are just…it's cool to be compared to Em, but he's one of the number one selling artists of all time. I'd rather be compared to him than pretty much anybody else. I think content and everything we rap about is completely different. We're different artists. We just happened to be under the same genre.

Complex: You said that you started listening to rap at 14?

Asher Roth: It was around 7th grade, so I think it was like 1998, about 10 years ago. Before that I was on some Dire Straits, to Bruce Springsteen…my mom had Earth, Wind and Fire and stuff. It's funny because I was talking to my publicist yesterday, we were cracking up like, “Yo, the first CD I ever bought was Dave Matthews Band Crash!” And he was just like, “Yeah man, you really are from the burbs, aren't you?”

Complex: Everyone was on DMB in the burbs.

Asher Roth: Everybody. Everybody was jamming to that stuff. I mean, that's what it was. That was my first year, and my first rap CD I ever bought was Jay-Z's Vol. 2 [...Hard Knock Life]. That kind of goes to show how late I got into it.

Complex: Speaking of Jay-Z, you’ve talked before about having to audition for him when you were shopping for the deal. Do you think he regrets signing Pittsburgh Slim to Def Jam instead of you?

Asher Roth: I have no idea man. I have no idea what Jay thinks. I'm sure he has no regrets in the world he's chillin'.

Complex: What was it like rapping for him?

Asher Roth: That was awesome. Being able to actually meet him and kick it with him and pay a little homage and everything'that was so cool for me. I'm still a kid, man. I'm still 22 years old. I'm a child, just growing up, so it’s fun to meet one of your idols growing up. And that was pretty much the experience. It was cool for him to be like, “Yo, I approve. I think you’re dope.” Like, “Do your damn thing.” So that was cool.

Complex: You address him passing on you in “Roth Boys.” Did it frustrate you at all?

Asher Roth: No, I think everybody's got their gripe with commercial music. I think that everyone who really does music is like “Ah, man, how did stuff like this make it on the radio?” Everyone gets mad, but life is too short to hold grudges or anything. I don't hold a grudge at all. More power to everybody that does music. Do what you do and do it well, as long as you want to be doing it. You know, no hard feelings at all.

Complex: Some critics of rap music like to say that it’s exploitative because it plays into the worst stereotypes about black people. Do you ever worry that you might be playing into stereotypes about suburban white people?

Asher Roth: Not so much, because I'm really making honest music. I'm not like trying to make something up and actually exploit it, like it’s not you and you pretend that it is. I think really what I'm doing is just bringing light to stuff that's been kind of covered up for a while. Like I said, I think hip-hop's been in the burbs for a long time. When I dropped that “Milli” remix, so many people reached out to me and said, “Wow, you finally said something that I've been feeling for so, so long.” I think that's really what it is.

Who should be crowned the true King of the ’burbs? Listen to the two Caucasian MCs and cast your vote.

We've always said the most entertaining thing about hip-hop is beef between grafted-devil MCs. Whether it was 3rd Bass vs Vanilla Ice, El-P vs. Sole, or even the ménage a quatre of Eminem vs. Cage, Everlast, and Evidence, there's something so gosh darn cute about white on white lyrical feuds. So you can imagine how amped we got the other day when our Facebook buddy John Brown came out against Internet-It-Boy Asher Roth.

See, we all know John Brown is King of Da Burbz. But JB is heated that Roth'who just dropped his Don Cannon/DJ Drama mixtape last week'is rocking some burb-based iconography too. In a statement he sent to HHNLive.com, John said that “this dude and his…sidekick are so obviously a bunch of Stans that watched the White Rapper Show and then completely bit the whole burbs branding and lifestyle that I represented on the show and continue to represent in hip hop… It’s like his team tried to take the branding from John Brown and the sound of Eminem and create a Burb Frankestein.” So who has the upper hand? Read our analysis and vote after the jump.

ALIAS
John Brown: “King of Da Burbz”

Asher Roth: “Joe College”

Advantage: John Brown. His legitimacy is proved by the two creative misspellings in his honorific. That shit is mad hip-hop, son!

EASY COMPARISONS
John Brown: Dred Scott from Ghetto Revival…we guess. There's something nondescript about JB's style'nothing bad, just nothing standout.

Asher Roth: Eminem. It's true, Roth's voice is almost a dead ringer for Slim's, and his flow at times takes on Eminemish cadences.

Advantage: Asher Roth. What happened to the JB who spit nice 16s on The White Rapper Show?

INDICATIVE SONG
John Brown: “Pimp Mode.”

Despite a technically decent flow, Big Brown gets big demerits for resorting to bland clichéd hooks and lightweight lyrics.

Asher Roth: “Cannon Freestyle.”

Homie's got jokes'we have to admit he blacks out (whites out?) on this one, riffing hilariously on the “cannon!” sample.

Advantage: Asher Roth. Listen to both and tell us we're lying.

MIXTAPE
John Brown: King of Da Burbz

Asher Roth: The Greenhouse Effect

Advantage: Can we call it a tie? Apples and oranges. JB prefers those rider beats and lyrics about weed and Henny, while Asher Roth is on that punchline shit, weaving in topical references.

VOTE
