Complex’s August/September Style & Design Issue is burning up newsstands this week with a bunch of pretty ladies and awesomeness in the world of—yup, you guessed it—Style and Design. Brian Donnelly, A.K.A. KAWS, collaborated with N.E.R.D. on Complex’s 2008 Style & Design cover story, so this time around we decided to profile the artist in our regular interview series “The Shotcaller.” Donnelly has had a breakout year, with gallery shows in NY and L.A., artwork on Kanye’s 808’s & Heartbreak, and a recent collabo with Japanese illustrator Hajime Sorayama.

We just put the uncut interview with KAWS online, where he speaks on Sorayama, Clipse, working with Supreme and BAPE, and new projects on tap. We also put together an exclusive bonus video that features a smoking hot model making out with the KAWS x Hajime Sorayama x Medicom/Original Fake NO FUTURE COMPANION figure…

Sure he has an extensive celebrity clientèle like 50 Cent, Eminem and Marisa Miller, but famed California tattooist Mr. Cartoon is now lending his work to limited edition products like a Samsung r450 mobile phone from MetroPCS. The phone, which has a product run of 30,000, features Cartoon’s artwork in his preferred yellow and black scheme, and also features special pre-loaded wallpapers and ringtones. When Cartoon was in town, we got a chance to build with the legend and talk about his latest project. Watch the video below…

This downtown icon passed away last night. Which 5 things will the art world remember him for?

Today, the art world mourns the loss of downtown golden boy Dash Snow, the 27-year old New York artist who reportedly passed away. Snow was known for his multimedia installations, photography, and painting and exhibited in galleries and museums including The Royal Academy in London, the Whitney Museum of American Art’s 2006 Biennial, Deitch Projects, Saatchi Gallery, Peres Projects and the Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery in New York.

Snow was an alternative icon, and perhaps you were familiar with his work. If not, read on below for our quick look-back at 5 of his greatest works…

Dash Snow Polaroids (2006)

Images surfaced yesterday of the Damien Hirst -designed TREK bike that Lance Armstrong will be riding in the eighth stage of the Tour de France bike race next week. The bike, like most things Hirst is attached to, is impressive, and the graphics look like they were created by a crazy man. To put it lightly, Hirst is a crazy man. Crazy paid, that is.

The name “Damien Hirst” is famous, and perhaps you posted his Supreme skateboard collaboration to your blogspot/Twitter and pretended to know his deal. Or maybe you copped that 10Deep T-shirt (?). Dude is actually pretty awesome, and just in case you find yourself pulling a blank when the British homie gets brought up in conversation, we figured we’d break down the bullet points for you. Hit the jump and get educated on Damien Hirst’s most iconic/interesting work so next time you sneak into a gallery function for the free Krug you’ll be all set.
• It’s a shark swimming in formaldehyde. Anyone can do that, right? Right, but only one guy did. Originally commissioned in 1991 by Charles Saatchi, the ad superhero re-sold it in 2004, turning Hirst into the second most expensive living artist after Jasper Johns at the time (he surpassed Johns in 2007). It also put Hirst on the map in a big way. Due to deterioration of the original 14-foot (4.3 m) tiger shark, it was replaced with a new specimen in 2006. It is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City until 2010. As soon as I sold one, I used the money to pay people to make them. They were better at it than me. I get bored. Many comic artists have mastered the art of drawing sexy female characters, but none are quite like Paul Pope. The man behind titles like 100%, Batman: Year 100, and PulpHope: The Art Of Paul Pope was kind enough to collaborate with the Complex team on “Mirror, Mirror,” the sexy skin shoot from our June/July issue. The concept: two hot women—one illustrated, one photographed—getting intimate in a house-of-mirrors. We just posted the whole story online, so enjoy, sexually repressed nerds!

On July 4th, Los Angeles tattoo artist-turned culture icon Mr. Cartoon re-releases his original Nike collaboration Air Force 1 in a special Livestrong colorway. The new Black/Black-Varsity Maize Mr. Cartoon Air Force 1 will be the first time Mr. Cartoon’s “Spider Web” toebox goes on sale to the public. It was first released as a 2005 Hyperstrike version of the Mr. Cartoon AF1 (50 to Cartoon, 50 to UNDFTD), with additional retail outlets selling the still limted, but different tattoo pattern. This Livestrong-ed up colorway joins the other “Greatest Hits” including the soon to be released Futura FLOM Dunk, Hideout Woven, and Busy P. Air Force 1, created to hype Lance’s involvement in the Tour de France, which starts on Saturday, July 4th.

Mr. Cartoon is a sneaker kingpin, and his signature models of both Nike and Vans helped define the earlier years of the newest generation of sneaker heads. Hit the jump for a history of Mr. Cartoon’s collaborations, including the Livestrong AF1, which comes out on Saturday…
Last night, we said eff the rain, and trekked upstairs from the Complex office to a party hosted by our bossman Marc Ecko that paid homage to the 25 year anniversary of iconic hip-hop group Run-DMC. Our check-writer threw the event in collaboration with Marco (an art collective that’s spearheaded by Peter Marco), who also had art for sale at the event.

In addition to the pieces that were on sale last night, Ecko and Marco hooked up for a limited edition shirt featuring Marco’s Hollis Crew Quarter Century design. 1,000 of the low-run shirts will be available at shopecko.com in a few weeks. Until then, check out some pics from the party below, including guests like Darryl “DMC” McDaniels and the always recognizable Retro Kidz…

Two evenings ago, The Horticultural Society of New York held their Block Party fundraiser in support of their Greenhouse Program, which prepares and trains rehabilitated felons on Riker's Island for jobs in the New York City Parks Department. Hot 97 personality, and generally awesome lady, Miss Info hosted the event. Block Party Curator Dana Albarella, acclaimed editor of hip, and hop, classic tomes such as Bobbito's Where Did You Get Those? and ego trip's Big Book of Rap Lists, enlisted a slew of top-shelf artists to contribute original works for silent auction, and many incredible works moved at reasonable prices in support of the great cause.

While most of us use photos for trivial shit like our social networking profiles, Canadian artist Susy Oliveira is making a living out of re-purposing flicks into sick 3D sculptures.

Combining photographs with foam, Oliveira has been churning out tricky-on-the-eyes paper crafts since 2005. Pictured above is Oliveira's “The Girl and the Bear” piece, a more recent creation she's added to her extensive portfolio that includes skulls, flowers, guts, and people re-interpretations. Sick. To see more of Susy's work, check out the gallery below…
You're mistaken if you think good illustrations are the result of just stenciling photos and tooling around with advanced computer programs. People who do it well have the ill skill-set, and while we can always Google image our favorite celebs, artist/illustrators like Mel Marcelo are making eye-balling famous people that ch more interesting.

Marcelo, a California-based illustrator, has had his art published in magazines like Newsweek, as well as several ad campaigns for brands like Oakley, but his recent work, like a shutter-shaded Barack Obama, and re-depictions of Seth Rogen, and Elizabeth Banks really impressed us. His Flickr is chock-full of bangers, but check some standout pieces below…

The Brooklyn-based Serbian photographer spent a week in the Turkish city for his latest gritty photo book and t-shirt release.

Brooklyn-based Serbian photographer Boogie just released his second city series, Istanbul, through Upper Playground. The new collection follows on the tail of the Sao Paulo book, a similar collection of his signature gritty and invasive urban portraits.

For many photographers, a book takes years, but Boogie shot the Turkish city for 15 hours a day for a week, a technique that brought forth a portrait of the city and its inhabitants that feels surprisingly honest and entertaining in its street-level reality. Upper Playground will be releasing a T-shirt ($24) with the graphics and a 96-page book ($20) through their site. See more images from the book and the t-shirt below…

Using an app called iMatrix, you can instantly read the secret messages hidden within this '80s-inspired pixel graffiti.

With straight-forward socio-political imagery from folks like Banksy and Shepard Fairey, the messages of today’s crop of street artists are usually pretty easy to understand. But what are you supposed to think when you come across a life-sized monster from Space Invaders on the street? According to Invader, the artist who posts the pixelated ’80s arcade game character on walls around the world, there’s a method to his madness.

Within his mosaic tile art, Invader has started embedding secret binary code messages that can only be cracked with an iPhone app called iMatrix. After you take a picture of one of Invader’s pieces, the program decodes it and spits out messages like “This is an invasion” or “I Invade Varanas.” Watch the artist explain it for himself in the video below…

Last night, Melissa Auf Der Maur debuted an eerie mixed media project that includes a new album, film and graphic novel in NYC.

Everyone knows that Courtney Love is a human shit-show, but whatever happened to the other ladies of Hole? Well, it’s been three years since the once-bassist for the group Melissa Auf Der Maur performed, but now she’s announced her return to music with a sophomore album due in Spring 2009. The album is just one part of a three-tier project that also includes a short film and a impressive graphic novel called Out Of Our Minds.

The OOOM exhibit, which debuted last night at a gallery in New York’s East Village, evolved from Melissa combining her new songs with photography. The film’s dark visuals almost seem inspired by the Blair Witch movies, but with more of an emphasis on cryptic imagery. Watch the trailer and take a peek at a few panels from the graphic novel below…
“Amy Winehouse by Mikey Georgeson

When it comes to depicting some of the world’s biggest stars, things can get ugly. In a new exhibit called “Remember My Name,” which opened last week at London’s massive 6,000 square foot Sartorial Contemporary Art Gallery, a diverse group of artists painted well-known celebrities in some decidedly unusual ways.

Artists like Sarah Doyle, Jasper Joffe, Mikey Georgeson and Cathy Lomax profiled celebrity culture at it’s worst for the show. Images of everyone from Angelina Jolie to Michael Jackson get subverted, while artist Matt Humphrey immortalizes Kurt Cobain by re-imagining his suicide gun. See more of “Remember My Name,” which runs through November 11th, below…
Last year when The Simpsons movie hit theaters, BK launched a promotion called “Simpsonize Me,” where you could turn a photo of yourself into a Matt Groening-style cartoon. But since then, Dean Fraser has been the only one still going hard, Simpsonizing a wide variety of pop culture icons for a little project that he’s calling the “Springfield Punx“.

Some of the characters Dean has rendered include Dwight from The Office, Neo from The Matrix, and even former Simpson’s writer Conan O’Brien. This month, Fraser is focusing on Marvel, posting a different superhero or villain from the comic universe each day. In addition to three of the Avengers pictured above (Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man), he’s dropped 12 other characters so far. Check ‘em out below…

New York City may not look like the colorful graffiti version of the ’80s, but luckily we still have legends like EASE to remind us of the work that the old school put in. Despite being rasied in Miami, EASE a.k.a. José Parlá came up like most of today’s crossover stars from graf’s golden era (HAZE, REAS), bringing his signature overlapping calligraphy style from the streets to fine art galleries worldwide. Last week, he finally took his work overseas for his first London exhibit “Adaptation/Translation.”

On display through November 8 at Elms Lesters Painting Rooms, a British gallery known for featuring installations from KAWS, Futura, and STASH, “Adaptation/Translation” finds Parlá using ruined walls as his canvas. The gallery is also commemorating the occasion by publishing 1,000 copies of a book that features Parlá’s work. See more images from the exhibit below…

To highlight the pure beauty of shoe design, this artist recreated his favorite kicks in Photoshop and placed them over some still-life scenes.

Sneaker art can get a little nerdy, but Jim Kim's latest re-creation of his favorite kicks makes for interesting browsing material when you're stuck working on a national holiday.

Kim wanted to highlight his favorite sneaker designs without the flaws that come with actually manufacturing them, so he decided to recreate nine of his favorite kicks in Photoshop from scratch. He juxtaposed freakishly perfect renditions of iconic models like the Jordan 1, Air Force One Mid, Jordan XI and Air Max 95 over serene still-life paintings, proving that kicks can be fine art too. Kim has a long way to go before he can come for Tinker's neck, but we give him props for his attention to detail.
This July, Peter Ruprecht (the photographer who brought us the stunning ladies of the Ecko Manufacturing ads) focused on a more humanitarian cause with his exhibit “Monadic Nomad.” It was through this series of environmentally and socially-conscious images that were both scenic and gritty that he documented his recent travels through India.

For the opening of “Monadic Nomad,” Ruprecht printed his photos on hand-made paper and hung them at the new Splashlight Studios Soho location in Tribeca. The exhibit officially closes its doors this Wednesday night, but the photos are available for purchase HERE. Proceeds will be donated to a charity that’s dedicated to providing clean drinking water. See some of the photos in the gallery below…

If you're looking to get creative with your costume this year, watch this instructional video to find out how to get flyer than the rest of ’em.

Halloween is right around the corner so you know what that means'time to get creative with costumes. Sure, you could dress up as something obvious, like Obama, McCain, or Palin (everybody’s doing it), but you might want to think outside the ballot box if you really wanna to stand out. The designers behind Gryphern, a website dedicated to costume design, are urging you to get creative with an instructional video that shows how to make a elaborate pair of retractable dragon wings.

If you’ve got a shit-load of time on your hands between now and October 31st, prepare yourself for this labor intensive arts and crafts project. Using pipes, cables and screws, the video provides an in-depth explanation of how you can create a pair of flapping wings for only $18. Even if you don’t want to dress up as a “dragon,” these will add a new dimension to any costume'we guarantee you’ll be the only Flying McCain in the party.
Without using any actual water, a Spanish designer managed to perfectly mimic an ocean's soothing ripple effects in this trippy exhibit.

What makes water so calming? Normally you’d have to trek to the Caribbean to study its best qualities, like a deep blue color and hypnotic ripple effect. But now a Spanish designer has recreated the soothing spectacle of an ocean'without using any actual water'for an exhibit called Waterdrop.

Héctor Serrano Studio created the installation in collaboration with Javier Esteban by using a framework of glowing blue metal rods and an underlying rolling mechanism to mimic the movement produced by a single drop of water. The work was commissioned by innovative bathroom designers Roca, who recently displayed it in a dark room at the 100% Design London event. Watch a trippy video of the exhibit below…
