For our latest “best” list, we had to take it back—yep, back to the good ol’ high school days, when social status was everything. (Things haven’t changed much, huh? *SMH*) We remember being brand-new freshmen trying to figure out the best way to become part of the cool crowd. We soon learned that the easiest way to become the B.M.O.C. was to play a sport and—if you were athletically blessed enough—earn that fresh letterman varsity jacket. Those leather sleeves were smooth as butter and the giant letter patch let everybody know that you had arrived. Officially.
Thankfully, those H.S. days are over (for most of us), but the varsity look remains a classic. Brands like Y-3 and Alexander McQueen have reinvented this school-boy style with modern twists on the jacket—everything from the traditional letterman steez to cleaner, patch-free, grown-up versions. Read on for our picks of the best 15 varsity jackets and show the world that you’re forever fresh, man…

Many designers use different techniques to capture the essence of the season, and for Spring '09, it seems that Ombre, which means “shaded” in French, is going to be the big push.
Ombre is a color gradation effect where fabric transforms from light to dark, and it’s been getting major traction on the runway with designers like Alexander McQueen, Givenchy, and Giorgio Armani all incorporating the look into their new pieces. What do you think of the tricky-color method? Are you ready to give it a shot? Vote on whether to HUMP or DUMP this trend below…
