There’s been no shortage of promotion for next month’s highly anticipated disaster movie, 2012. You would think the world was ending in three weeks, not three years, with all the measures Columbia Pictures is taking to make sure everyone knows about this film. Commercials and press are crucial, but this five minute preview of the movie might have just sold us on copping on a ticket. Movies like this are about special effects and little else, and the clip above makes it clear that viewers won’t be shortchanged in that department. Mass apocalypse never looked so good.

You would think that it’s easy enough to make a good mindless action movie, but apparently not, because it’s one of the most hit or miss genres out there. The line between corny and awesome is extremely thin and most filmmakers don’t tread it too carefully.
With that said, we hope newcomer Scott Mann knows what he’s doing and The Tournament falls into the latter category because the flick looks like it has some potential. Battle royale between 30 of the world’s deadliest assassins? Hot Asian chick? Priests bucking shots? Yeah, we’re interested, but that’s always the initial story with these types of movies. Don’t screw it up.

Summer’s half over, which means that you’ve only got until Labor Day to enjoy the biggest, dumbest, loudest crap that Hollywood has to offer. And we have to say that action movies so far this year haven’t been nearly big, dumb, or loud enough: Transformers was crappy and racist, Pelham 1-2-3 was like a sequel to Cocoon, and Terminator: Salvation had The Chamomile Sensation (i.e., Common). So where are you gonna get your explosions and terrible one-liner fix? From us, maing!
