Complex reflects on the past two decades of Paul Litchfield's iconic concept for a sneaker.

Remember the Pump? A lot of people talk about begging their Moms for Jordans, but in a lot of areas, the Reebok Pump held as much cache as any sneaker on the market. Sneakerheads who “really lived it” may contest, but hop in a time machine to 1992 and ask any second grader what sneakers they want, and you’ll get a 50/50 split.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the sneaker that had everyone pressing the air-filled basketball before sporting events, stunting in the lunch room, or just plain wasting time pretending to talk to girls. The Reebok brand is investing heavily on bringing the sneaker back with a series of new releases, and you know what? It just may work, because the sneaker has history. Hit the jump and take a walk through the Pump’s best moments…

NOVEMBER 20TH, 1989: DOMINIQUE WILKINS INTRODUCESTHE REEBOK PUMP
• “Pump up and Air Out!” November 20, 1989 started the Reebok Pump reign. Not only did the shoe look unconventional, but the pump-up aspect was something that no one had ever seen before. The first series of commercials were heavy on the anti-Nike tip, with Dominique Wilkins asking “Mike” to come Pump up on primetime TV. Craze.

1990: REEBOK COURT VICTORY IS INTRODUCED
• Shots fired! Tennis star from the early 90s, Michael Chang made it clear to Nike who he was riding with en route to becoming a top ranked tennis player. Chang’s Pumps that hit over a decade ago have since been retro’ed. Who knew a tennis player could be so badass on the international stage? Dude straight up bitched Agassi.

1990: SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE PRESENTS “NIKEY TURKEY”
• In this SNL parody of the sneaker, Chris Rock and Co, pumped up a turkey, as a take-off on RBK’s commercials. Was this saying the pump was unnecessary and silly? We can’t tell. To be honest, this sketch wasn’t that funny, but hey, it was further proof of the pop-culture status of this awesome little piece of footwear.

• This is where things really picked up. In the ‘91 dunk contest Dee Brown reached down and pumped up his Omni-Lites, the camera got a close-up, and he went on to pull one of the most famous dunks in sports history. So. Sick.

We know. The weekend is here. We’re excited about it too, but consider catching up on today’s new music before you hit the town tonight. We have some dope indie rock courtesy of Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Small Black, hip-hop covered via Curren$y and Dirty Money’s star-studded remix, plus a little Ne-Yo for the R&B heads. You really can’t go wrong here. The listening session kicks off after the jump…

The holiday season must be upon us, as we’ve been seeing more and more fair isle sweaters out here on the east coast. The knitting technique used to create patterns with multiple colors has been around for a minute, but first gained popularity back in the 1920’s when the Prince of Wales began rocking shirts with this type of knit in public. Now this throwback has returned with a slick modern styling. But are they too cheesy and festive? Tell us if these sweaters should be HUMP‘d or if they need to be DUMP‘d. Vote below…

The Blind Side, a new sports drama based on Michael Lewis‘ book The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game, tells the real-life, against-all-odds story of Baltimore Ravens offensive tackle Michael Oher, who came from a broken home and lived alone on the mean streets of Memphis, Tennessee before becoming a football star. How did he do it? He was saved by some well-to-do white folks, of course!

Not to take anything away from Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy, the good people who took Oher in and helped him realize his potential, but seriously, why do sports movies always have to focus on black ghetto kids going nowhere fast until their great white hope comes along to teach them how to not be illiterate or go to jail? Whatcha tryna say, <del datetime="2009-11-20T15:22:51+00:00">Hollywood</del> Honky-wood? Black people can’t make it without benevolent whites? Don’t make us call Rev. Al on you! To see why we’re suspicious and steamed, check out these other, pattern-forming sports movies about light-skinned saviors.

Hardball (2001)
• Keanu Reeves plays a degenerate gambler who’s forced to pay off his massive debt by coaching a Little League team of troubled black kids from Chicago’s notorious, gang-infested Cabrini-Green projects. He plans to repay his debt and ditch his players, but he inevitably takes pity on them and stays to teach them how to be winners. No, not even a degenerate gambler bets on black.
————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Wildcats (1986)
• Goldie Hawn plays a girl’s track coach at a bourgeoisie (i.e. white) high school who leaves to follow in her famous father’s footsteps and coach football, only the job is at a scary inner-city high school where there are guard dogs! She manages to transform her rowdy, undisciplined black players into a team because there’s no limit to what white pluck can achieve!
————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Radio (2003)
• His bald white head beaming beneficence, Ed Harris plays real-life South Carolina high school football coach Harold Jones, who takes in an illiterate and mentally handicapped young black man (James Robert “Radio” Kennedy, played by Cuba Gooding Jr.). By allowing him to work with the team as head cheerleader, assistant coach, and team manager, Jones transforms Radio from a town joke into a inspirational figure. You see, it’s the kind white man who is really special.
————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

The Love Guru (2008)
• Romany Malco plays a black hockey player who loses his girlfriend (Meagan Good) to a well-hung white French-Canadian goalie (Justin Timberlake) and is aided in his quest to get her back by a white spiritual leader (Mike Myers) who was raised in India and sounds like a Slurpee-slinger stereotype. There is way more racist fuckery in this turd of a film than we can even begin to discuss here, but seriously, a black man turns to a white savior because he’s intimidated by another white dude’s dong?! This shit is implausible even in Bill Romanowski’s fantasies.
————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Cool Runnings (1993)
• After failing to qualify for the 1988 Summer Olympics, four Jamaican sprinters try to achieve five-ring glory in the 1988 Winter Olympics as a bobsled team. Clueless about the sport, they seek wisdom from a drunken, grumpy old ice beast played by John Candy (literally, he was a beast on the ice, winning two gold medals bobsledding for the U.S. in the 1968 Winter Olympics before he got caught cheating in 1972 and moved to Jamaica in shame to become a bookie). Yet again, black athletes are so inept that even the lowliest, most destitute white bum has to be brought in to show them how it’s done. Ice cold, Disney, motherfuckin’ ice cold.
————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

• Kevin Bacon plays an assistant coach who goes to Africa to pry Saleh, a tall-ass teenage Winabi prince with star potential, from his tribe, telling him that playing college basketball will make him a better king. While on his recruiting mission, he helps resolve the tribe’s potentially bloody conflict with an encroaching mining company…with a high-stakes game of basketball. Thank the gods for the white man, otherwise Africa would be really fucked!
————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Bring It On: All or Nothing (2006)
• Hayden Panettierre plays a cheerleader at an elite affluent high school who’s forced to move to working-class, multi-ethnic Crenshaw Heights in East L.A. (gasp!). After initially clashing with the cheer team’s black captain (Solange Knowles), she shows her new black and Latina teammates how to really move, so they can beat her old school and win a contest to appear in a Rihanna TV special. It makes perfect sense because, you know, white chicks have historically been known to back that ass up.
————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

The Legend of Bagger Vance (2000)
• Finally, a black man saves a white man! Will Smith plays Bagger Vance, a mysterious caddy who helps Matt Damon’s character find his stroke again (pause) after the former golf star is traumatized by WWI and becomes a drunk. The thing is, Vance isn’t a black man—he’s a ghost! Way to throw black athletes a bone. Maybe next time don’t sink it in the hole.

We already showed you the sport's ugliest dominations, now take a look at the softer side of Mixed Martial Arts with our wifey countdown.

Earlier this week we showed you the business end of MMA, with our countdown of the Top 50 MMA Dominations (click here if you missed it). Now it’s time for the pleasure!

You know most of these dudes have taken major L’s in the cage. So what do you do after you get your ass handed to you? Well, luckily for some of these guys, after they take that ass-whooping, they have someone to make them feel (slightly) better. Turns out MMA fighters happen to have some really hot WAGS to go home to. Kinda makes you want to become a MMA fighter, right? Well, check a few of the hottest ones below…

In case you didn’t catch our recent Wake N’ Watch post, Fight Club celebrated its 10th anniversary this week by holding special midnight screenings and releasing a special edition DVD. Aside from its themes of social and economic upheaval, crazy fight scenes and lessons on soap making, Fight Club also boasted one of the most eccentric characters in film history: Tyler Durden (played by Brad Pitt).

Almost as crazy as his personality was his style of dress, which was a complete departure from the straight laced style of his alter ego The Narrator, played by Edward Norton. Halloween’s long gone, but you can still co-opt both their looks into your own style. Check below to see how to dress like the dudes from the timeless classic…

Oh, Penelope Cruz. What more can we say about the Spanish stunner that hasn’t already been said? Well, not only is Cruz one of the hottest girls of the decade, #23 to be exact, but she also has no problem starring in movies where her sexuality is explored.

In her new Almodóvar movie Broken Embraces, which opens this weekend, Cruz plays a call-girl named Lena who becomes a mistress to one dude, and then falls in love with another. Yeah, she’s getting it in. Her latest role is just another bullet point on her scandalous resume, that includes making out with Scar Jo, and hooking up with Charlize Theron. As much as we’re jealous of her past conquests, we’re also very thankful they happened. Which is why we gave her the Ultimate Archive treatment on this fine Friday. So sit back, and enjoy clicking through PC’s hottest pics…

The soul singer reveals his 7 favorite songs to get busy to while promoting his new LP "Sex Therapy."

Grammy-award winning singer Robin Thicke is an expert at writing sensual music the ladies love. Don’t think that makes him soft though—he’s still your favorite rapper’s favorite R&B crooner. His fourth LP Sex Therapy drops on December 15th, and we think there’s a pretty good chance that keeping it in rotation will help you get laid. Seriously.

Given the theme of the album, we set out to get some sexual confessions from the man who landed the gorgeous Paula Patton, but (always the gentleman) he refused to “kiss and tell.” Instead, we got him to reveal his favorite tunes to get down to and why he thinks Nicki Minaj is a dope date. Check out the quick Q&A and watch the “Sex Therapy” video below…

Interview by Soo-Young Kim

Complex: Your new album is called Sex Therapy. Have you ever had a bad sexual experience you needed therapy from? Maybe when you lost your virginity?

Robin Thicke: [Laughs] I’m gonna skip that one. What else?

Complex: Alright. What are your favorite slow jams for getting busy?

Robin Thicke: “Let’s Get It On” by Marvin Gaye. “Adore” by Prince. There’s the “Bump N’ Grind Remix,” R. Kelly. “I’m Fucking You Tonight” by R. Kelly and Biggie is a good one. [Laughs]

Complex: [Laughs]

Robin Thicke: Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together.” And I do that song in concert. So what else are we missing? Oh, let’s say D’Angelo’s “Brown Sugar.”

Complex: Those are classics. And are you sure you don’t have any amusing stories of the best—or worst—sex you’ve ever had?

Robin Thicke: A gentleman doesn’t kiss and tell! These are wild questions. [Laughs]

Complex: Nicki Minaj is featured on your record, “Shakin’ It For Daddy” and you lend a verse on Leighton Meester’s “Somebody to Love.” If you were a single man and you had to pick one of these girls to take on a date, who would it be?

Robin Thicke: I’d have to go with Nicki Minaj. I like the way she raps.

Cleveland Browns x Nike? No, actually Hiroshi Fujiwara x Nike. The man known for his understated designs on sneakers took over an under-the-radar silo in the Match Classic, and hooked up it up premium suede, and this Eric Manginifriendly colorway. The sneakers already hit CaliRoots, but those in the state should check 21 Mercer to cop. Oh, and keep them away from Mangina, please.

We’ve always repped for Quentin Tarantino (and his women) and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise in the past, so it was a pleasant surprise to run across this unique viral video that’s making its rounds on the web right now. Imagine if the worlds of Reservoir Dogs and TMNT were combined and this mash-up is what you get. Seems a bit odd, but trust us, if you like either in the least you’ll find this entertaining.

STORE: Air Traffic Control

CITY: Miami Beach, FL

SINCE: 2008

WHY WE COSIGN: As of late, sneaker boutiques have been popping up like babies in the ’50’s. And if you consider yourself a sneakerhead that should be good news. But what we’ve noticed are a bunch of stores with no differentiating qualities, all peddling the same semi-exclusives. What happened to having design concepts as dope as the products you were selling? Looking to distance themselves from the rest of the kick pushers, the folks behind Miami Beach’s Air Traffic Control have done just that with one of the most inventive shop themes we’ve seen: an airport. What better place to get fly?

Opened by three homies who shared a love of sneakers, it’s obvious as soon as you walk through the doors that this isn’t one of those fly-by-night pop up shops. The first think you’ll notice is the cool stainless steel shelving that holds sneakers sick enough to make Bun B drool—If you can’t find a pair in this consignment-type shop, you probably can’t get ‘em. You’ll then peep the large conveyor belt that shuffles sneakers around much like the baggage claims found in real airports. Pretty genius. And, of course, they also stock dope t-shirts and hats to match with your newly purchased kicks. All in all, this is easily one of the coolest sneaker spots we’ve visited. If you wanna get your shoe game proper, Air Traffic Control can guide you in the right direction.

Complex: What is the aesthetic you’re striving for at Air Traffic Control?

Owners: Our goal was to bring concept to consignment. So mixing industrial stainless steel shelving with our check-in style register, conveyor belt centerpiece, and a pair of waiting room style benches, we felt we’d arrived at a good balance in carrying out our airport-inspired theme. As well as offering the largest variety of exclusive kicks in the Miami area.

Complex: Describe your favorite piece in stock right now.

Owners: The Nike Air Force 1 “Atmos” is a shoe commonly overlooked at our shop. To us it represents an era when collaborations weren’t a dime a dozen, before quality control seemingly went out the window and “Obsessive Sneaker Disorder” made its debut on Oprah, and when Flight Club was simply, www.vintagekicks.com.

Complex: Who are your style icons?

Owners: Collectively, we share an affinity for anything Ralph Lifshitz (Ed Note—that’s Ralph Lauren to those who don’t know). As far as sneakers go, we can’t go without acknowledging Tinker Hatfield. Elephant print is arguably as iconic as any LV or Gucci monogram print. Style icons are everyday people just the same, though. They walk the streets of New York City, and they’re the basis and true inspiration for our style.

Complex: What was the first designer item you bought or wore?

Mark: My prized possession as a youth were a pair of tan, Polo Country cookie boots, which I’m happy to say, I still have to this day in their original box. I break them out every now & then for nostalgia’s sake, but that quickly fades after an hour or so, when I realize my foot has grown some since then, and sacrificing comfort for the sake of style just isn’t a priority these days. I know, sad.

Complex: What are your retail plans for the future?

Owners: Our business was born based on a shared love for sneakers, and while that’s currently the core of our shop, we’d be fools to pigeonhole ourselves to that category only. The market is forever changing. Versus being stubborn and essentially going down with the ship, we’re prepared to embrace change. ATC is beyond sneakers and we’re looking forward to building our brand and introducing products outside of the world of sneakers. Stand by.

Complex: Any anticipated collaborations?

Owners: Our focus at this point is really just on growing our own brand to a point where we feel comfortable collaborating with others. We’re essentially still newbies, and have a lot of ideas that we want to present on our own. When the time is right, and if it makes sense, you’ll start seeing ATC collaborations.
News flash: pro athletes have it pretty sweet. If regular working stiffs get arrested, act like lazy assholes, or use hate speech, we lose our jobs and aren’t likely to find another one soon. But in the world of sports, it turns out that doing a little yay, a little time in the pen, or cussing out your boss will not only get you another job, but a better one!

This week came the news that running back Larry Johnson had signed with the 7-2, AFC Central-leading Cincinnati Bengals after being released by the 2-7, AFC West cellar-dwelling Kansas City Chiefs, who, despite their woeful performance this year, cashiered the former Pro Bowler for (among other things) Chris Brownin’ broads in the club, dissing Chiefs head coach Todd Haley on Twitter, and using gay slurs to address the media. It turns out though that LJ isn’t the first to make a similar worst to first upgrade based on his own fuckery, as you’ll see with our History of Upward Failing Athletes…

DARRYL STRAWBERRY
UPWARD FAIL: How do you get back at the league for suspending you for sniffing a little coke? How about joining the biggest American sports franchise right as they’re on the brink of a dynasty. The Giants went on to finish in last place both in ‘95 and ‘96, while Darryl scooped up three rings with the Yankees in ‘96, ‘98 and ‘99.

ANDRE RISON
TEAMS: 1995 Cleveland Browns to 1996 Green Bay Packers
UPWARD FAIL: Rison had the worst season of his career in ‘95, just as the Browns were in the process of relocating to Baltimore. The fans weren’t too happy and let Rison know at the home games. His response? “We didn’t make the fucking move. So, for all the booers, fuck you too! I’ll be glad when we get to Baltimore, if that’s the case.” Rison never made it to Baltimore because after a brief stint with the Jaguars in ‘96, he went to the Packers that same season to help Brett Favre and the boys win Super Bowl XXXI.

ISAIAH RIDER
TEAMS: 2000 Atlanta Hawks to 2000-01 Los Angeles Lakers
UPWARD FAIL: Arrests, mandatory drug counseling by the NBA, and showing up late to games got J.R. released by the Hawks after the lockout-shortened 2000 season. Rider landed on his feet though, signing to the Lakers where he played off the bench the majority of the season and won a ring despite being left off the playoff roster. See kids, fuckery can lead to success. Well, at least temporarily.

TERRELL OWENS
TEAMS: 2003 San Francisco 49ers to 2004 Philadelphia Eagles
UPWARD FAIL:After the ‘03 season a contract dispute occurred when T.O.’s now former agent, David Joseph, forgot to void the remaining years of his contract with the 49ers, resulting in the team retaining rights to Owens. After much whinging by Owens, S.F. traded him to the Eagles for a draft pick and defensive end Brandon Whiting. T.O. went on to play in his first Super Bowl that season with Donovan McNabb, before bitching his way out of Philly as well.

J.J. didn’t go in for that mentoring shit, and never even showed up in Nola. The Hornets then traded him to the Suns where Jackson made it to the Conference Finals in consecutive seasons, which was just a little better than the Hornets, who had a combined record of 56-108 over those campaigns.

TEAMS: 2006 Oakland Raiders to 2007 New England Patriots
UPWARD FAIL: Moss wrapped up his feelings about playing for 2-14 Oakland pretty succinctly in an ‘06 interview: “Maybe because I’m unhappy and I’m not too much excited about what’s going on, so, my concentration and focus level tend to go down sometimes when I’m in a bad mood.” Such sentiments got Randy shipped to the Patriots in ‘07 (for a fourth-round draft choice) where he set records with his new BFF Tom Brady and participated in the only 16-0 regular season in NFL history. The Raiders? Well, they doubled their win total from ‘06 and finished 4-12. Yeah if we went from worst to near perfect we’d have that same Kool-Aid smile Moss is sportin’ in the pic above too.

It actually took Marbury a few years but it was worth the wait when he joined the defending champ Boston Celtics last season, who went to the playoffs while the Knicks went fishin’. Too bad Starbury was one season late for the Celts world championship, and a bit too crazy to stay on the roster for this season.

DEVELOPER/PUBLISHER/ PLATFORMS: VALVE/ VALVE/ PC & 360

FUN FACT: While many of the most violent video games are no exception, Left 4 Dead 2 found itself being played with much bloody and gory enjoyment except for Australia which put a ban on the much anticipated sequel.

WHY COMPLEX IS CO-SIGNING IT: While we’re fans of first person shooters, what’s the point of buying the same “run for your fucking life” game? Not having played the first Left 4 Dead and really only being fans of the Zombie Nazis mini game in Call of Duty, we stepped into the Left 4 Dead 2 world with a little bit of skepticism but left with a lot of smilies- and some new underwear.

STORY: Well like we said, it’s survival. Infected people running around trying to kill you and your friends and kill you. Of course every character has their background story but the main objective of the game is to live and reach a final extraction point.

GAMEPLAY: What’s cool about Left 4 Dead 2 is unlike other zombie games it gives you the Infected versus mode where you play as a boss zombie out to kill the survivors you play as in other modes. The other modes include Scavenge, Versus, Survivor, Campaign, and Realism. We really like realism. Sometimes there are just too many moments in these games where we find we some how survived an onslaught of enemies with very little bullets. Realism mode makes things a bit harder and requires a bit more communication between you and your fellow survivors.

Speaking of which, Left 4 Dead 2’s greatest aspect is probably the multiplayer. The game itself is fun but who the hell wants to fight zombies on their own? And more importantly who wants to really sleep by themselves after that? The Complex Crew roles deep so when we play video games, everyone has to like the game. This game provides the rush and awesome time that even your noob team mate can enjoy. Especially with the game’s “A.I. Director”.

The AI in this title is ridiculous. Depending on how well you and you’re team are doing it will switch things up. Things going too well? More zombies, less ammo. Things going too bad? It will make things easier for you and your<del datetime="2009-11-19T21:20:07+00:00"> crew of softies</del> broskis.

GRAPHICS: If the sequel to a game’s graphics don’t improve, it’s really a let down. Thankfully that problem doesn’t occur. While it’s not the spitting image of New Orleans (and let’s face it, most games aren’t the spitting image of squat) the graphics do pay good homage to the southern city even whilst covering it in blood and brains.

DOWNSIDE:Unfortunately like we said, this is a zombie survival game. So like many other games in that genre it doesn’t have much to offer in terms of story and depth. This is a game you’ll probably never play on your own, but you got friends right? Oh you don’t? Shit.

What would this decade's music vids be without all of the eye candy? Join us for a countdown of our favorite video chicks.

In case you couldn’t tell, Complex loves music videos. Earlier this week, we dropped our comprehensive countdown of the 100 Best Music Videos of the 2000s (click here if you missed it), but something was still missing. What would music videos be without the so-called “video vixen,” the model/dancer/actresses who provide us with a little aspirational eye candy in our darkest hour?

The last decade has truly been the golden age for the music video model, from icons like Melyssa Ford to new favorites like Rosa Acosta. Even some of the world’s sexiest celebrities (ScarJo!) have made memorable video appearances, so we wanted to provide a comprehensive look back at all the ladies who have caught our eye on MTV, BET and YouTube over the last 10 years. Check out Complex’s 50 favorite music video models below…

Everyone knows the name Buffie The Body, so you’d think her video vixen career was more prosperous, but that’s not the case. Her crowning achievement remains the “So Seductive” video. When your ass defies gravity, it only takes one video to get famous.
