Subway Art Goes Digital

subwayartonline.jpg
Subway Art is one of the most definitive books detailing and popularizing NYC graffiti history. Published back in 1988 1984, it features the photos of legendary graffiti documenters Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant. While Faith of Graffiti took a first crack at the newly emerging art form in the 70’s, Subway Art focused specifically on the masterpieces that were painted on the subway cars during graffiti’s heyday in the early 80’s. Some of have described it as the print version of classic graffiti cult documentary Style Wars—which Chalfant also worked on. While we of course would urge you to get yourself a physical copy, feel free to peruse this digital version from cover to cover.

Wikipedia for Comics

comic-vine-finall.jpg
Wikipedia spin-offs continue to pop up. First Chickipedia, now Comic Vine—a new online resource for all things superhero related. The site is a throwback for former comic card collectors with each entry’s extensive biography, accompanied by a user-generated ranking of the heroes by their super human attributes (speed, strength, etc.). Fan boys have another reason to sweat.

The ‘Three Thug Mice’ Run Wild Online

threethugmice.jpg
Finally, a cartoon we can look forward to watching. Billed as the “Ghetto Disney,” the Three Thug Mice is a series of 35 animated shorts—new webisodes drop weekly—set to realistic backdrops in NYC and feature a veritable who’s who of genuine downtown personalities doing voiceovers, including: rappers, graffiti writers, porn stars, actors, comedians, and other talented stand outs. The official ‘Thug Mice’ website popped things off with the debut of the first installment, “Leap Frog.” The instrumental laced (Sam Sever) ghetto saga depicts the ongoing thuggery of anti-hero vermin Vic (R.A. the Rugged Man), Tik (MIN One) and Brik (Kool G Rap), who make their way through the concrete jungle. The terrifyingly humorous trio hustle amidst a cast of cavorting characters while evading the porcine police, the cockroach cocaine cartel and a flock of other devious critters.

The Three Thug Mice are the brainchild of multi-faceted artisan Steve Marcus who sums up his branch of cinema quit eloquently, “Support the hood — not Hollywood.” And streetwear fans will be extra content, with Orchard Street collaborating on a limited edition Three Thug Mice t-shirt. Jump for the full cast including M1 of the Dead Prez, the Cro-Mags’ John Joseph, and street photographer Ricky Powell.

Fat Joe Leans Back With Chelsea Handler

fatjoechelsea.jpg

Although Chelsea Handler is usually too obnoxious to even try and stomach watching, this interview she did with Fat Joe is pretty entertaining. Joey CRACK briefly talks about how he never wins a Grammy because of the “backpack mafia” and his ongoing beef with 50-Cent, claiming “this guy’s as real as the WWF.” Good stuff.

Taco Bell Offers Tasteless Promotion for Striking Writers

tacohell.jpg
With the Writers Guild of America Members still striking and no real end in sight, Taco Bell figured it would be a good enough opportunity as ever to exploit the out of work writers. In a so called effort to offer a “spicy creative outlet” and to support the guild, the fast food chain that clearly thinks outside the bun is running a promotion asking the scribes to pen “fun and fresh bits of wisdom” that will then be selected and printed on hundreds of millions of Border Sauce packets as part of a new promotional contest. The ten best “wisdoms” will be selected and members can win a year’s supply of the Mexican-like fast food, valued at a whole $260. The contest is open to Writers Guild members only. Here’s some of their “most famous proverbs” that have made their way onto the packets and that the writers need to top:
