<img src="http://cdn.complex.com/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/Left-4-dead1.jpg" alt="Left-4-dead" title="Left-4-dead" width="250" height="355" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-74479"align="right" />TITLE: LEFT 4 DEAD 2

DEVELOPER/PUBLISHER/ PLATFORMS: VALVE/ VALVE/ PC & 360

FUN FACT: While many of the most violent video games are no exception, Left 4 Dead 2 found itself being played with much bloody and gory enjoyment except for Australia which put a ban on the much anticipated sequel.

WHY COMPLEX IS CO-SIGNING IT: While we’re fans of first person shooters, what’s the point of buying the same “run for your fucking life” game? Not having played the first Left 4 Dead and really only being fans of the Zombie Nazis mini game in Call of Duty, we stepped into the Left 4 Dead 2 world with a little bit of skepticism but left with a lot of smilies- and some new underwear.

STORY: Well like we said, it’s survival. Infected people running around trying to kill you and your friends and kill you. Of course every character has their background story but the main objective of the game is to live and reach a final extraction point.

GAMEPLAY: What’s cool about Left 4 Dead 2 is unlike other zombie games it gives you the Infected versus mode where you play as a boss zombie out to kill the survivors you play as in other modes. The other modes include Scavenge, Versus, Survivor, Campaign, and Realism. We really like realism. Sometimes there are just too many moments in these games where we find we some how survived an onslaught of enemies with very little bullets. Realism mode makes things a bit harder and requires a bit more communication between you and your fellow survivors.

Speaking of which, Left 4 Dead 2’s greatest aspect is probably the multiplayer. The game itself is fun but who the hell wants to fight zombies on their own? And more importantly who wants to really sleep by themselves after that? The Complex Crew roles deep so when we play video games, everyone has to like the game. This game provides the rush and awesome time that even your noob team mate can enjoy. Especially with the game’s “A.I. Director”.

The AI in this title is ridiculous. Depending on how well you and you’re team are doing it will switch things up. Things going too well? More zombies, less ammo. Things going too bad? It will make things easier for you and your<del datetime="2009-11-19T21:20:07+00:00"> crew of softies</del> broskis.

GRAPHICS: If the sequel to a game’s graphics don’t improve, it’s really a let down. Thankfully that problem doesn’t occur. While it’s not the spitting image of New Orleans (and let’s face it, most games aren’t the spitting image of squat) the graphics do pay good homage to the southern city even whilst covering it in blood and brains.

DOWNSIDE:Unfortunately like we said, this is a zombie survival game. So like many other games in that genre it doesn’t have much to offer in terms of story and depth. This is a game you’ll probably never play on your own, but you got friends right? Oh you don’t? Shit.

CLICK HERE TO BUY LEFT 4 DEAD 2 FOR $54.99

We know, we’re dropping “Best of the 2000s” lists on you like rappers drop “at the end of the day” on us. But at the end of the day, you guys are clickin’ so we’re going to keep it going. In light of our most recent countdown, The Top 100 Video Games of the 2000s, we’ve decided that there needs to be a tribute to the consoles that allow us to put our procrastination skills to good work. While it seems more than obvious which consoles have come out, no one has crowned a king just yet. Fortunately for you we like to push the envelope and press buttons. So hate it or love it, here are our The Top 10 Video Game Consoles of the Decade…

10) PLAYSTATION PORTABLE
LAUNCH DATE: March 24, 2005
PRICE AT LAUNCH: $249.99
KEY GAMES: Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, God of War: Chains of Olympus, Lumines
PROS: A PlayStation 2 in your pocket (pretty much)! The PSP was ambitious. With few awesome titles and an unmatched number of features that we’ve only seen on home consoles, we were pretty happy with the little homie.
CONS: Unfortunately the Nintendo DS just had a better choice of games and while SONY consoles are great, no one wants a huge, low grade, 250 dollar mp3/DVD player.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

9) PLAYSTATION 3
LAUNCH DATE: November 11, 2006
PRICE AT LANCH: $499.99 (20GB) and $599.99 (60GB)
KEY GAMES: Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, Little Big Planet, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of Patriots
PROS: To be honest, the PS3 was looking like a true contender. Memory for days, wireless remotes, online play with the PlayStation Network, and the hype of somehow making the PS2 better. Not to mention some of the best graphics we’ve seen ever.
CONS: All that stuff came with a price, well two actually. The launch prices were $499.99 and $599.99. For some reason, the folks at SONY didn’t get the memo that no one was going to pay that much for anything that didn’t come with a happy ending. Despite all the hype, PS3 has been one of gaming’s biggest disappointments. All those bells and whistles and we still can’t name 10 decent exclusive titles.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

8) GAMEBOY ADVANCE
LAUNCH DATE: June 11, 2001
PRICE AT LAUNCH: $149.99
KEY GAMES: Super Mario Advance, Metroid Fusion, Advanced Wars
PROS: The GameBoy is probably one of the greatest things to hit gaming, actually make that life. The GBA offered better graphics, two extra buttons at the top, and game titles galore. With the release of Super Mario Advance rookies and veterans alike went nuts over the handheld. (pause?)
CONS: The only bad thing we can say about the GBA was the ton of cash we spent on those attachable screen lights because you couldn’t really see shit if you didn’t have perfect lighting.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

7) NINTENDO GAMECUBE
LAUNCH DATE: November 18, 2001
PRICE AT LAUNCH: $199.99
KEY GAMES: Metroid Prime, Super Smash Bros. PROS: The Gamecube was Nintendo’s attempt at keeping up with the Sony and Microsoft consoles. It had upgraded graphics–well besides that, it’s weird remotes, and it’s small discs, that’s all it had.
CONS: Sometimes it’s better to be simple then complicated, but this is an example of being too simple. The Gamecube pretty much got tossed aside as that thing you buy for the kids because of its immaturity.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

6) XBOX
PROS: The Xbox was Microsoft’s foot in the door of gaming. With a small following and no predecessors like the PS2 or Nintendo Consoles, Microsoft held its own by bringing gamer’s the Halo titles. With that, Xbox really took over shooter games and landed a place in the hearts of nerds that really only comes second to Olivia Munn.
CONS: Other than Halo the Xbox didn’t really have anything that the PS2 didn’t. Oh and the fact that it weighed a ton and was the size of a VCR didn’t help very much either.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————-
PROS: Ah, Dreamcast, we hardly knew ye. SEGA’S attempt at staying afloat was pretty awesome and in a way, ahead of it’s time. The graphics were on point, the games were awesome, and the memory cards were like Tamagotchi’s! *Cough, cough* except you know, manlier and for adults.
CONS: There was nothing really wrong with the Dreamcast, in fact we still have ours. It was simply a victim of poor timing. A little after its release, SONY launched the PS2 and it was just- you know, better.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

4) NINTENDO Wii
KEY GAMES: Wii Sports, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. PROS: What Nintendo did with the Wii was innovative in gaming. Up until the Wii was actually released most people thought it would be Nintendo’s downfall in the Next Gen. era. Turns out most people were wrong. Gamers found themselves completely stunned by the level of interactive gaming Nintendo presented and hey, the graphics weren’t bad either.
CONS: Ask the millions of broken television sets, windows, walls and oh, not to mention that one girl who got a black eye from a flying remote. The Wii was a little too interactive and everyone really just started accidentally breaking their furniture.

PROS: Probably the best hand-held system we’ll ever see. A truly phenomenal piece of technology that doesn’t present any flaws. We’ve been doing some pretty extensive Best Of The 2000s lists lately—oh, you haven’t noticed? Whew. But among all consumable goods, no other product has been as consistently successful (and recession-proof) as the almighty video game. We should probably dig up some nifty stat to insert here, but suffice to say, video-game companies continue to make shitloads of money while other industries struggle to stay up. Thank you, couch potatoes!

The 2000s saw the emergence (and subsequent death) of multiple generations of consoles as well as the advancement of video-game design into a veritable art form. We waded through the titles to produce our definitive list of the 100 Best Video Games of the decade. Grab your controller, hit start, and get ready to be mad…

Yesterday, a little video game called Brütal Legend hit stores (click here to read Complex’s full review), the latest creation from Tim Schafer, the man behind fan favorites like Psychonauts and Grim Fandango. The new game is an homage to classic heavy metal culture, centering around a roadie on a mission to save the universe.

And of course, given his own proclivity for all things metal, Jack Black signed on to star as the game’s protagonist. To celebrate his transition into the gaming world, Complex interviewed the actor in our October/November issue for our regular feature called “The Shotcaller.” We just posted the story online, so click the link below to hear Black talking about getting down with Brütal Legend, his first metal concert and the real-life inspiration behind his roadie hero…

DEVELOPER/ PUBLISHER/ PLATFORMS:
Double Fine Productions/Electronic Arts/360 & PS3

FUN FACT: Tim Schafer (Grim Fandango, Psychonauts) created main character Eddie Riggs (voiced by Jack Black) after being inspired by a Megadeth roadie.

WHY COMPLEX IS CO-SIGNING IT: This thunderous action-adventure (with some surprising RTS influences) game is unique for its style, story line and gameplay. Throughout the game there are multiple cameos by real heavy-metal legends (Shout out to Ozzy!) and it’s filled with plenty of humor, middle fingers, and foul language. Thank you, Jack Black!

STORY: Upon insertion (ayo!), the game doesn’t have a load screen, but an actual full-screen movie—featuring Jack Black at a record store—that sets up the storyline for the game. As the greatest roadie of all time transported to a fantastical heavy-metal realm, your task is to a) liberate the land from the evil Lord Doviculus and b) rock the fuck out whenever possible.

GAMEPLAY: During single-player mode, you’re armed with a guitar and battle ax to kill enemies (stick-figure goths, glam rockers, emo kids, misfits, etc.) by playing different combinations on your guitar. Outside the main narrative, there’s plenty of mini-game sequences (beat ‘em up, racing, shooting) that are way less lame than the term “mini-game” suggests. There’s ability to unlock songs, collectibles, and upgrades to pimp your ride.

The multi-player portion lets you and up to seven other people playing as various game characters to wild the fuck out on each other (no Rob Halford).

GRAPHICS: Featuring tons of leather, skulls, studs, hot-rods and flames, the 3-D alternative reality is clearly heavy metal-inspired—classic album cover art references are sprinkled throughout. Character animation is expressive and lively—from using a Zippo to light a stogie to flipping people off, typical bad-ass attitudes are present and accounted for. It’s extremely detail-oriented and you’ll need to look twice at everything… like seeing Mariah and Nick together for the first time.

DOWNSIDE: Some mission objectives aren’t stated explicitly, and the only way to figure them out is to fail. Also, after a while, the game’s side quests become a little repetitive. And in a move that’s a little disappointing for button-mashers, Eddie Riggs can’t jump. Of course, being voiced and modeled by Jack Black, what did you expect?

TITLE: SAW

DEVELOPER/PUBLISHER/PLATFORMS:
Zombie Studios/Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc./360, PS3, PC

FUN FACT: Based on a treatment by creators of the SAW movie franchise, Leigh Whannell and James Wan, and voiced by the man who made Jigsaw a horror icon, Tobin Bell.

WHY COMPLEX IS CO-SIGNING IT: Games based on movie franchises are almost always instant fails. SAW manages to bring you through a story that’s compelling and relevant in an environment that never lacks for tension—and amazingly enough does it more successfully than the past four big-screen sequels combined.

STORY: You have the misfortune of playing the detective who spent his career obsessing on hunting and taking down Jigsaw. The consummation of your mission is also your imminent downfall with your friends and family broken, hurt, or killed in the process…and now Jigsaw is here to punish you for it. Locked in an asylum, you are not only forced to outwit Jigsaw at every turn but he has also implanted something in your stomach (ayo!): the key that will free the other unfortunate souls locked in here with you…

GAMEPLAY: In a matter of minutes, we had the controls locked down and were well on our way maneuvering through Jigsaw’s most extensive traps yet, using a welcome combination of wits, fast reaction, exploration, puzzle-solving and holy-fuck-what-is-that escape tactics. All of this came easy with an intuitive third-person control layout with only minimal hiccups in the combat…or maybe that’s because we were nervously tapping buttons trying to smack a bitch up quick before we became just another stain on the floor.

GRAPHICS: Steeped heavy in the grime and blood-saturated visuals that made the films a hit, no detail is left untouched, as you sneak down halls with your Zippo flickering, creeping through nightmarish environments that excel beyond our expectations of depravity. Thankfully there’s enough down time to really soak in the bloody brilliant set designs.

DOWNSIDE: Unfortunately we didn’t get to play all the way through to the end, so the only downfall to this game we can predict is a short game length—which could easily be solved with downloadable content. So, in other words, this is a game that defied all our negative expectations and delivered a great gaming experience that moved beyond the trappings of survival horror clichés.

DEVELOPER/PUBLISHER/PLATFORMS: Icarus Studios/Marc Ecko Entertainment/iPhone

FUN FACT: Michael C. Hall, star of the Showtime series, lends his voice to the game while series writer Tim Schlattmann crafted an original storyline. Doesn’t get any more official than that.

WHY COMPLEX IS CO-SIGNING IT: Because as the first phone to provide a worthwhile gaming experience, the iPhone is awesome. We just wish there were more serious games available. We love playing Crash Bandicoot and Trism, but besides Metal Gear Solid and Assassin’s Creed, there aren’t that many mature, serious games available. And Dexter: The Game seems to be pretty serious. Based on the Emmy-award winning Showtime series about a serial killer that kills other killers (we guess two wrongs do make a right), the game puts you in the shoes of the show’s main character Dexter Morgan as he tries to solve murders just like he does in the show. If you haven’t been able to catch the show, you’ll start DVR’ing it once you play the game.

STORY: As we said up top, Tim Schlattmann, a writer from the show jumped on board to mold the story of the game so that it really felt as if you were in the show. While the games story line is original, it follows the same premise as the show: Dexter Morgan (played by you), blood splatter analyst for the Miami PD, takes justice into his own hands by investigating homicide scenes and looking for the killer himself.

GAMEPLAY: When it comes to iPhone gaming controls, you either love ‘em or hate ‘em. We happen to love them. Dexter: The Game gives you the option of using on screen toggles or the accelerometer to move your character around the various crime scenes. Everything is very fluid, giving you full control of your environment. If you need to look around, all you do is swipe your finger across the screen in the direction you want to look. Everything you need to access during the game is available at a touch of the screen.

Dexter: The Game also gives you a number of choices while playing. As you encounter other characters during the game, you’re able to choose Dexter’s responses so as to not give away the fact that he’s secretly murking criminals in his spare time. You can even decide whether or not the courts should handle the bad guys or if they should take a dirt nap. If you do choose to off a guy (pause) you get to cut ‘em up! Always fun. When you’re not committing the cardinal sin, you can occupy your time by playing some of the mini games like solving Blood Splatter puzzles to see what weapon was used and how.

GRAPHICS: We knew the iPhone could deliver powerful gaming graphics, Dexter: The Game really pushes the envelope with graphics that could compete with Sony’s PSP. If only the iPhones email capabilities were as good.

DOWNSIDE: The only downside we saw the length of gameplay. While there is a ton of stuff to do while you solve each case, with only five cases to solve, It leaves you wanting more. But what do you want for $5.99?

While fans eagerly await the return of Showtime’s Dexter (Season 4 debuts September 27), Complex’s sister company Marc Ecko Entertainment has developed a sick 3D iPhone/iTouch game that will serve as perfect hold-over. Dexter: The Game puts you in the shoes of part time serial killer Dexter Morgan as he analyzes bloody crime scenes for the Miami PD (his day job) and stalks his unsuspecting human prey (his night job). Even if you aren’t familiar with the series, the game features enough innovative graphics and serial killin’ to keep you entertained on your long commute. Watch the trailer below, then hit the iTunes store (HERE!) to cop the game for $5.99…

DEVELOPER/PUBLISHER/PLATFORMS: Rocksteady Studios/ Edios Interactive/PC, PS3, XBOX 360

FUN FACT: Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy reprise their roles as the voices of Joker and Batman.

WHY COMPLEX IS CO-SIGNING IT: Let’s be honest, 99% of superhero-based video games suck. After the super noob-friendly Batman Begins game and the awful Superman Returns game, it was looking down hill for DC. But much like the newest Batman film, the Dark Knight is here to save them. To put it in simplest terms, Batman: Akrham Asylum is not only a fanboy’s wet dream but it also holds its ground as one of the best titles of this year.

STORY: Screw Sherlock, the Dark Knight will always be the greatest detective of all time. While most other superhero games stick close to the comics, BAA is original while still paying respect to comic history. The new plot, which focuses on Batman battling everyone he’s locked up in the past, is an interesting and new idea, but it’s the dynamic gameplay that’s most impressive…

GAMEPLAY: Stiff-moving and generic trademark attacks are the hallmark of horrible movie-to-game adaptations (we see you Fantasic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer). Arkham Asylum isn’t flashy, and Batman just kicks ass like any other non-superhuman. Aside from basic button-mashing, the game gives a certain amount of freedom to players. Although there are a lot of options available on how to dispose of enemies, the game’s most difficult setting provides a challenge even for serious gamers. We suggest you start out playing on the normal mode, then work your way up instead of acting like one of those I-start-playing-on-the-hardest-level dickheads.

GRAPHICS: While the movie version of Arkham Asylum was…eh…okay, the graphics of this game do a great service to Gotham’s little slice of hell. Featuring broken furniture, scribbles on the walls, and disgusting housekeeping, BAA provides players that disconcerting “Where the hell am I?” feeling that isn’t seen in games anymore.

DOWNSIDE: The only really bad thing that we can say about BAA is an overdrawn introduction with the Joker being taken inside Arkham. We get it, he’s crazy, he’s going to do something that starts the game, blah, blah, blah. After that though, it’s smooth sailing all the way to the end of the game.

Whether coin-op or console, people have been wringing their hands over video-game violence since before Pac-Man was devouring ghosts whole (ayo!). It’s true that video games have always indulged our adolescent fantasies, and none more so than those revolving around playing with guns—and in some people’s cases, playing with hatchets, chainsaws, and cars. In today’s Grand Theft Auto era, nothing is virtually sacred, but it took a whole lot of trailblazing to get this far. So we at Complex took it upon ourselves to count down The 25 Most Violent Video Games Of All Time. What incited protests in the ’80s may seem quaint now, but don’t forget that rock ‘n’ roll was once the anti-Christ. Let the blame game begin!

Twenty years after Game Boy, the variety and strength of dedicated gaming handhelds has turned a novelty into a viable industry. The Game Boy’s distant cousin the Nintendo DSi ($169) is still on top, but Sony’s new PSP Go ($249) eschews hard media for downloadable games, and Linux-based units like the Pandora ($330) and Gamepark’s GP2X Wiz ($179) are as open-source as it gets for the homebrew and emulation community. Throw one in your bag and bring the arcade wherever you go.

As an addendum to our glimpse into the future of mobile gaming in the 2009 Style & Design package from our latest issue, we’re taking a look back at the 10 best handheld games of all time…

Madden Day is finally here, which means that our next few months are about to be filled with marathon sessions of Madden 10 (EA Sports). Early reviews are touting the game as awesome and fun—but really, what the fuck did you expect? It’s Madden, son. Madden!!! This year, EA has added a dope online franchise mode, meaning that instead of geeking out by yourself on the living room couch…well, you’ll still be geeking out by yourself on the living room couch, but at least you’ll be connecting with real-life opponents via the Internet. And we all know playing Madden is like having sex—it can be pretty fun solo but nothing beats testing your skills with a real-life human.

Of course, not all Madden opponents are created equal, and over the years we’ve identified recurring archetypes of dickhead players. Here’s our list of the 8 worst types of Madden competitors. If you fit one of these profiles, then please put the controller down before you come fuck with us…

Nerds everywhere, rejoice! World Of Warcraft is coming to the big screen. Of course, you h4rdc0r3 fans knew that already, but the project got one step closer to reality today when Sam Raimi (Spiderman, Drag Me To Hell) signed on to direct. Given Raimi’s experience with big franchises, we’re sure the WoW flick will have plenty of wild moments, but here are Eight Warcraft Moments that definitely won’t wind up in the movie…

Finally, there’s a way to show off how serious you are about Halo without scaring the neighbors. And if you’re like us, you’re probably sick of wearing the same grease-stained undershirt when you go on week-long benders glued to the couch playing Halo and taking bong hits until you’re eyeballs retract into your brain. Complex’s bossman Marc Ecko has taken the dive into the gaming world with his new collection that features six Halo-inspired t-shirts.

As huge fans of neither Japanese adult videos or import Japanese video games, we were overjoyed to hear that popular AV actress Rio is in the running to be cast in the newest installment of Sega’s Yakuza game series Ryu Ga Gotoku. It wouldn’t be the first time that a carnally-focused performer has shifted their attention from pickles to pixel—video games are usually more permissive than mainstream television or movies as far as being amenable to skin queens (or kings, as the case may sometimes be). To celebrate Rio’s almost-achievement, we pulled together a septet of porn stars who worked their magic in a video game or two. Now pick up them sticks and get slaying!

This week's must-have new release is the long-awaited sequel to the best boxing game ever.

TITLE: Fight Night Round 4

DEVELOPER/PUBLISHER/PLATFORMS:
EA Canada/EA Sports/360, PS3

FUN FACT: New this year is EA’s Photo Game Face, which allows players to use their own likenesses (or Gucci Mane’s) in the creation of original characters.

WHY COMPLEX IS CO-SIGNING IT: Unfortunately, last week’s Best of Video Games (So Far) post was filed too early to include Fight Night Round 4 (which officially drops tomorrow). But no worries: By the time ‘09 expires, we’re quite sure that FNR4 will be atop everybody’s year-end list (check the Metacritic.com stats, son!)

Many a wack boxing game has been released in the three years since the last Fight Night—we’re looking at you, Don King Presents: Prize Fighter—but they’ve all been pretenders, not real contenders. Fight Night Round 4 resoundingly reclaims the belt with everything you loved about Round 3—only better. That means noticeable improvements to the Legacy and World Championship modes (including a much deeper single-player career experience and online title fights) as well as subtle refinements to graphics and gameplay, which were pretty damn near flawless already. FNR4 is the best boxing game you’ll ever play, period. So even if you’re gonna be broke for the next few months, know that some Dutches and this game are all you need to kill off summer. Word!

Yup, no matter the state of the economy, video games are still moving big units. (Really, is there a better way to escape our crazy world than ensconcing yourself on a couch and button-mashing the pain away?) This year has seen the return of some all-time classics along with a couple Sony exclusives that almost (almost) make the PS3 worth it. Find out what games we picked and why in the countdown below…

RELEASE DATE: March 29

THE COMPLEX CO-SIGN: Guitar Hero (and Rock Band) are like the boat shoes of the video-game world: While we’re getting sick of the whole phenomenon (and the countless versions of them), we can’t deny their sheer ubiquity—or when they’re executed totally right, like GH: Metallica. To rock out in a rock game, you need a proper rock band, not fucking Cheap Trick or Sum 41. Metallica’s catalog is tailor-made for the GH experience, and while it’s not an ambitious title, GH: Metallica delivers what it promises.

THE COMPLEX CO-SIGN: There’s a reason that Tony Hawk’s is trying to, uh, hawk a new plastic skateboard peripheral for his upcoming game. Why? Because with its latest edition, EA’s Skate franchise has passed the veritable Tony Hawk series in terms of fun and overall experience. Really, there’s not much more to say than that Skate 2 is the best next-gen skateboarding game you can buy, with a great intuitive control system and a cool online component. As for that new Tony Hawk game? There’s a reason why Madden sucks on the Wii—we enjoy playing it strictly as a video game, not as an awkward approximation of real life. Best yet is the game’s multiplayer mode, which includes the ability to taunt the enemies you’ve merked out. And man, do we love taunting.
THE COMPLEX CO-SIGN: They don’t make baseball games like they used to, but at least we have MLB 09: The Show, by far the best one out now. Like soccer titles (and unlike Madden and the NBA games), MLB 09: The Show is geared more toward the hardcore fan than the casual one. That doesn’t mean you have to be a hardball freak (ayo!) to appreciate The Show, but the game’s deep career and franchise modes—two of its strong points—will really only appeal to the true stat nerds. Which is OK, ’cause we’re stat nerds at heart. Everything here is better than last year, with the addition of more boneheaded errors to reflect <strike>Luis Castillo</strike> reality. All that, and those Dustin Pedroia ads are pretty damn good, too.

Slimer? I hardly met her!

As featured in the June/July issue of Complex, the Ghostbusters video game (Capcom–360, PS3, Wii, PS2, PC, DS) is out today and it’s already garnering good reviews. Since there’s only so much we can fit on a magazine page, we’re posting our extended interview with Glenn Gamble, senior artist at Ghostbusters developer Terminal Reality. See below for a gameplay trailer and Gamble’s discussion of the game’s illest weapon, Dan Aykroyd, and why the Infernal Engine is so dope…

Interview by Nick Marroni

Complex: How would you describe the gameplay of Ghostbusters?

Glenn Gamble: [Gears of War] is probably the closest thing to us out there on the market but Gears is a really good straight-up shooter, where this one, we had to come up with a whole new wrangling mechanic and trapping mechanic in the game, which is kind of interesting. It’s funny, ‘cause years ago, when we started the game, someone got the bright idea of using fishing mechanics, so we actually bought pretty much every fishing game that [our local] GameStop had, and [the manager] was like: “You’re doing a fishing game?” And we were like: “Kinda.’”

Complex: Terminal Reality is the proprietary house for the Infernal Engine, which powers Ghostbusters. In layman’s terms, how does Infernal enhance gameplay?

Glenn Gamble: It’s an insane engine—we have transitions going from indoor to outdoor, which you very rarely ever see in a game. You’ve got an incredible physics engine—everything can be destroyed. Being an artist, I built the table and then I have to take an extra day to break the table, just so, as a player you can slice it horizontally, you can blow the legs off the table if you wanted to, you can blow it lengthwise—you can just cut this table up however you want.

Complex: What was the thought process behind the variety of weaponry in the game?

Glenn Gamble: You get money for busting the ghosts and then you can upgrade—you can save your money to spend on the big upgrade items or you can spend it on the littler upgrade items. They really did a good job of branching out the [tech] tree—originally it was a real linear progression, but then when we started really messing around with it, it was like: “Why not? Why not give the player that kind of freedom?” It’s really crazy; we do branch out to kind of the weirder weapons. We’ve got a dark matter generator, which crystallizes ectoplasm—I’ve just re-done pretty much that entire look of that weapon to give it more of a weird ethereal look to it. So, it’s really kind of funky looking—you get these weird amethyst-looking crystals growing off the ghosts.

Complex: The proton beam is pretty sick.

Glenn Gamble: I spent over a month and a half getting the proton beam to look the way it does, with programmer’s help—he did all this crazy math, did it all wild, shooting every which direction. The proton beam originally was just as wild and crazy as it was in the movie and that’s really frustrating to a player when you aim at the crosshair and it goes five, ten feet to the left of the crosshair. So we had to control it in, but it’s that fine line of making it look like the proton beam, but at the same time it still have to hit somewhere around the target so people don’t get frustrated with it. Crossing the streams is absolutely bad—you can do it if you want, but you get a blowback and it’s a very damaging thing.

Complex: How was it working with the original cast?

Glenn Gamble: [Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, and all the rest are] all really into it—we actually had to go through a fresh batch recently, this little extension we had, they’ve come back in and recorded a few new lines where we needed it. Everybody’s on their ‘A’ game. I don’t know if you’ve heard Dan Aykroyd today—he’s gotten older as we all have; he doesn’t really sound like the Dan Aykroyd of yesteryear, but I don’t know what magic stuff he did, but I’ve heard the voice sessions and it’s great because he just kind of takes this deep breath and all of a sudden his voice sounds like it did 25 years ago; it’s just really cool. It’s like, “Oh my God, that’s Ray!” You hear that little childful glee in it and everything.

Complex: In the game, you play as a rookie Ghostbuster, not as one of the O.G. cast. Why is that?

Glenn Gamble: We wanted to keep the core feeling of the movie together and a big part of that is the character interaction. And, once we came to that realization, it was just the logical step of making the player the outside observer, the new guy on the block. The co-op is actually really cool—it’s all team-based with common objective points, so really feeding into that whole Ghostbusters team feeling. There are five main characters in the game, but we do have two other sub-characters that, in our opinion, are just as important, which are, one: the proton pack, because that’s got all your HUD information on it, as well it’s right there in the camera the whole time, so it had to be good. The other one was Ecto-1, both of which we wanted to treat as their own characters, even though they’re not technically a character in a character sense.

Complex: How is the Wii version different from the others?

Glenn Gamble: The Wii version’s being done by Red Fly—we are sharing everything, but at some point we did have to cut, because they’re going a very different stylistic route, because, of course, the Wii and PS2 versions aren’t nearly as powerful as the next-gen versions and it eventually led to character and story changes on their end to accommodate that. At the same time, to their system’s strength, I wish there was some way I could throw my controller and have it throw out a trap; that is one of the coolest things the Wii does. You can throw the nunchuku and it throws out the trap, and that’s the motion for it and it feels so cool and natural, I want to throw my 360 controller across the room and get the same result.

What does the future of gaming hold? Here's everything you need to know from this week's video-game expo.

Ethrizzle—the name alone holds godly. Yesterday marked the end of this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (a.k.a. E3) in L.A., where the biggest monsters of video-gaming come together in L.A. to meet, greet, and sell their wares to the press and each other. We’ve condensed the entire convention into this informative post about what you can expect in the video-game world for the rest of this year and beyond. Between Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, who had the best E3 showing? What titles are the most promising for the coming year? And what the fuck is a Project Natal? Find out these answers and the other top things we learned at E3 below…

Text by Nick Marroni

5. NINTENDO’S ACTUALLY MAKING SOME GOOD GAMES.
• Busting out with Super Mario Galaxy 2 and the completely new and unexpected Team Ninja collabo of the re-imagined Metroid, NINTENDO finally demonstrated that they still have some love for the O.G. gamers that put them on the map. After a past couple years of very disappointing nonsense like Wii Music and other stuff that not too many real gamers really care about, Nintendo’s shown that they’re still down for the cause and that there’ll be at least a couple good reasons to dust off that Wii—the Wii MotionPlus is none too shabby either and really steps the waggle game up a notch.

4. THE PS3 IS SERIOUS BUSINESS, BUT SONY STILL DOESN’T QUITE GET IT.
• With exclusives Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2, God of War III, and MAG on the way, the PS3 looks to have plenty to distract folks. Still, SONY failed to announce a price drop and the rumored PS3 slim doesn’t appear to exist; unless these things change before holiday madness, this generation’s console war will be all but decided. To make matters worse, the new PSP Go’s two main talking points seem to be (1) at $249.99, it costs about 80 bucks more than the original PSP and (2) people can’t play their old PSP UMD discs on it—go ahead and purchase the extended warranty while you’re at it. Heavy Rain is very, very cool, though, and gamers, people, and penguins everywhere should pay close attention to it when it launches early next year.

3. MICROSOFT IS IN IT TO WIN IT.
• All of the big three had strong showings at E3 this year, but MICROSOFT emerged as the overall winner. With Alan Wake, Halo 3: ODST, Left 4 Dead 2, Mass Effect 2, and former PlayStation exclusive Final Fantasy XIII all dropping within the next year, the 360 is still the cat’s pajamas. The no-delay, instant streaming, full 1080p video service through Xbox Live and the new, beyond state-of-the-art camera-based motion recognition that they’ve got going on (see above) pretty much solidifies Microsoft in the pole position for the current and next gen (if the streaming 1080p actually works as advertised). Microsoft has eliminated the need for a Blu-Ray disc player and one-upped the Wii in its mainstream, motion-recognition appeal—Grandma won’t want to waggle a remote anymore when she can just scan a golf club and get down to business.

2. THE FUTURE IS A BIT CREEPY.
• Along with Microsoft’s camera comes a scary advanced kid named Milo as part of Lionhead Studios head and Fable series developer Peter Molyneux’s new Project Natal (they’re trying to get people to say it Nuh-Tall, but, for real talk’s sake, let’s keep it Nay-Tul, please). Natal and Milo use the new motion recognition camera to simulate the most advanced, ostensibly real world yet seen in the interactive entertainment space (or any other space too, for that matter) and it’s downright creepy and just a bit unsettling to see how effective and immersive the simulation is. When this thing really reaches critical mass, WoW addictions may end up looking downright tame in comparison to the socially deprived children who might end up getting attached to Milo and his other soul-sucking little buddies.

1. THE REAL E3 IS BACK!
• The one thing everyone will agree on about this year’s show is that a big Electronic Entertainment Expo is a fun Electronic Entertainment Expo and that the more the merrier—things still aren’t back to E3’s peak years of the early ’00s and some companies probably wouldn’t have minded a bit more traffic and congestion, but it’s plain to see that this is the way things are supposed to be and the mistakes of the past two years now stand corrected. Especially cool is that surprises were actually left as surprises (though we already knew about the Em/Jay-Z DJ Hero performance) without everyone knowing ahead of time during the press shows exactly what to expect—Final Fantasy XIV pretty much came out of nowhere at the Sony show and the new Castlevania received a loud round of approval. Things should be good to go again for next year and beyond and E3 looks set to stick around. Video games are the business, and business is good.

The iconic puzzle game turns 25 this week, so we dug up some interesting stops on its journey.

As the entire video game industry celebrates the fact that they’re still making bank while most other media industries are crumbling around them, one of the games responsible for the creation of the consumer game market celebrates its 25th birthday this week. And, no, it’s not Pong. It’s Tetris. Even if you’re not a big video gamer—you know, the type with the headsets, gaming chair and desert dick— it’s safe to say that you’ve moved a couple digital bricks in your lifetime.

What started as a Russian sensation created by Alexey Pajitnov and Vadim Gerasimov, turned into one of the best selling video game of all time with over 125 million copies sold since it debuted on an IBM PC in 1984. But more than a game, Tetris is an institution. So as we look forward to all the new iterations of Tetris that have yet to be released, let’s look back at some of the most memorable moments in the block-y game’s history…

TENGEN TETRIS: THE SOVIET MIND GAME, 1987
• When Tetris first dropped, it was like the Drake of the video game world—every company wanted a piece of it. To maximize their profits, Elektronorgtechnica, the company that owned the rights to the game, dished out rights to a number of different companies including Nintendo (console) and Atari (non-console). Despite this arrangement, Atari created a company called Tengen and released their own version of Tetris. The game was a hit with players as it featured more options—like cooperative play—than the original. Unfortunately, Nintendo took their ass to court and the game was pulled off the shelves.

THE BEST TETRIS PLAYER, EVER, 2005
• If you do anything long enough, you’ll become good at it. Even Tetris. That said, we don’t think we could ever become this good at a video game—not even Madden. We’re not sure who this kid is or how long it took him to become the Grand Master of this Tetris spin off, Tetris: The Grand Master, but we can surmise one thing he undoubtedly went without while honing his skills. And we ain’t talkin’ about a shower.

HUMAN TETRIS, 2006
• As part of their “Game Over” project, where they recreated popular video games with people, the NotSoNoisy crew won a YouTube Video Award in 2007 for the best creative video for their Human Tetris video. We don’t know how they do it in France, but here in America the term “blockhead” isn’t a good look.

THE SIMPSONS and FAMILY GUY, 2007
• Yeah, we’re surprised it took Matt Groening all those years to incorporate a Tetris reference into The Simpsons. As for Peter’s “Hey, Guys, I’m coming in!” (above), we’re just gonna Pause that and keep it moving.

TETRIS: THE MOVIE, 2008
• If you couldn’t tell from our video game movie showdown with Planet XBox, video game movies suck. Like, really suck on some Superhead in ‘98 shit. So as silly as this fake trailer for a Tetris movie seems, we can’t say it’d be any worse than another Super Mario flick.
