NOVEMBER 20TH, 1989: DOMINIQUE WILKINS INTRODUCESTHE REEBOK PUMP
• “Pump up and Air Out!” November 20, 1989 started the Reebok Pump reign. Not only did the shoe look unconventional, but the pump-up aspect was something that no one had ever seen before. The first series of commercials were heavy on the anti-Nike tip, with Dominique Wilkins asking “Mike” to come Pump up on primetime TV. Craze.

1990: REEBOK COURT VICTORY IS INTRODUCED
• Shots fired! Tennis star from the early 90s, Michael Chang made it clear to Nike who he was riding with en route to becoming a top ranked tennis player. Chang’s Pumps that hit over a decade ago have since been retro’ed. Who knew a tennis player could be so badass on the international stage? Dude straight up bitched Agassi.

1990: SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE PRESENTS “NIKEY TURKEY”
• In this SNL parody of the sneaker, Chris Rock and Co, pumped up a turkey, as a take-off on RBK’s commercials. Was this saying the pump was unnecessary and silly? We can’t tell. To be honest, this sketch wasn’t that funny, but hey, it was further proof of the pop-culture status of this awesome little piece of footwear.

1991: DEE BROWN WINS SLAM DUNK CONTEST WITH THE NO LOOK
• This is where things really picked up. In the ‘91 dunk contest Dee Brown reached down and pumped up his Omni-Lites, the camera got a close-up, and he went on to pull one of the most famous dunks in sports history. So. Sick.

• The pump’s collabo with ALIFE was so dope, and for the first time in years Reeboks were killin’ the sneaker nerds. It’s a good overall middle-ground, versatile shoe for smaller and bigger players. The ankle support was good but stiff. A piece of the shoe was digging into my foot on the outer ankle, but other than that, no major complaints.”

DK: “These have an inner sock liner/boot that was very comfortable. It felt like you were wearing two socks, which wasn’t always good, because it bunches a little and you have to get used to the buttery feeling, but feels great. It’s sewn into the shoe, so unlike some sock shoes, it’s not gonna come out. I didn’t notice the sock shifting as I made cuts, though, so that’s a plus. Of all the sneakers I tested, these had the best court response. I felt the most in tune with the court and my foot. It’s geared more towards guards than big men. I can’t recommend it to bigger players. The lowest cut of all the shoes, and if you need that you probably want to look somewhere else. Straightforward design with no fancy designs. You don’t have to pump or strap anything, which is good.”

When I come down and I feel like my ankles pop out, I have to stop and reset. Style wise, for Pony, it’s a miracle. RJ: “I have a wide foot but the tapered back felt good because it was snug on my foot and kept foot movement minimal. The Hypermax provided a decent amount of ankle support but the lightweight toe cap made me a little nervous on forefoot support. The toecap is a little hard, so make sure you get a pair that fits, otherwise you’re going to be banging your toes into the toecap-not fun. With low-cut socks the flywire cuts you up a little bit, so keep that in mind as well. These are sexy sneakers, though, I’ll walk around in these all day. In the sunlight they look purple instead of red and black.”

JM: “This sneaker is a little bulkier than the Hyperize (which I’ve worn) but the tradeoff is that it feels sturdier, which is good for a heavier guard. The cut-outs look cool but don’t do anything for you other than perhaps add ventilation. They lose shape a little and don’t hug your foot when you lace the shoes up tight. It feels like that could have been addressed, but as far as aesthetics, these are perhaps my favorite Jordan brand team shoes I’ve ever seen.”

Ransom started as a boutique in Canada, a bridge between the sneaker street fashion and men’s high-end gear. In the beginning, it sold select brands from around the world along with a small sprinkle of the Ransom private label, a cut and sew line that started in fall of 2007. From there, the brand has evolved into a line that is carried in stores around the world. The flagship locations are in Toronto and Vancouver, and design is done out of the Toronto office. Ransom is part of United Front, the umbrella that houses the Goodfoot, Nomad, Stussy Canada, and Ransom.

This new collaboration with adidas came about organically between friends at both brands. Fraser Avey, brand manager for Ransom relates, “This was an outlet for adidas to try something new, and we obviously we jumped at the opportunity.” Both teams had similar aesthetic ideas for how the collection should look, and the line is an original take on classic heritage pieces. This isn’t a one-off, but the start of a bigger, long-lasting program. The first iteration drops October 31st, and look for Ransom by adidas to continue in seasons to come.

CARMELO ANTHONY: The Jordan IX are my favorite. That’s one of the shoes that I played in, in high school. I never could afford a pair of Jordans so those were one of the first pairs of Jordans I played in because our team was sponsored by Jordan at Oak Hill Academy. I had a special pair. When Quentin Richardson was with the Clippers he sent me a pair of his IX’s because he was on Jordan Brand. They didn’t match the uniform though [laughs], but they were an exclusive.

AIR JORDAN II

CARMELO ANTHONY: It’s one of the shoes that you can wear off the court, on the court, to a wedding, wherever. Also I had a chance to play in them in my second year in the NBA. I had the special white/carolina blue and yellow colorway.

NIKE AIR PENNY 1

CARMELO ANTHONY: I’m a big Penny Hardaway sneaker fan. I like the original Penny Hardaways, not the new models. I was young when I got them, and I could actually afford a pair of Penny’s.

NIKE AIR FORCE MAX (BARKLEY)

CARMELO ANTHONY: I like the old school Barkley’s. The all-black and silver ones or the black and grey with the strap. I still get them when they re-release. I buy sneakers everyday, whenever I’m out and about and I see a pair I’m going to buy them.

NIKE AIR MORE UPTEMPO (PIPPEN)

CARMELO ANTHONY: I was real young when they came out and on the team that I played for, all the older guys wore them. They all bought their shoes and sneakers. At that time they were the hottest shoes in the street.

WHY THEY DIDN’T MAKE IT: Sure these were sick and solidified the “cool grey” colorway as an awesome go-to for Jordan as well as other brands, but in the interest of not getting too Jordan-heavy with the list, we left off re-issues of original silhouettes (besides special make-ups.) Think of all the sick IVs, VIs, and VIIIs that dropped in the past nine years. The whole front-end of the list could’ve been Jordans. What fun would have that been?

SNEAKER:Jordan Defining Moments Package
YEAR RELEASED: 2006
WHY THEY DIDN’T MAKE IT: This Black/Gold package VI/XI combo had people going crazy when it came out, but the staying power of the sneakers has diminished significantly since its release. Now that Jordan brand is doing even more DMP’s and the packages aren’t a one-off (people thought they may be back in 2006), don’t be surprised to see more powerful pairings than the first drop in the future that will make you forget about the O.G.s

SNEAKER: adidas Gazelle Skate
YEAR RELEASED: 2007
WHY IT DIDN’T MAKE IT: The new take on a classic, timeless silo was good, but it hasn’t picked up that much steam yet. Can the Gazelle ever do for adidas skate what the dunk did for Nike SB? We’re hoping, but it didn’t happen in time for this list.

SNEAKER: Nike Nylon Dunk
YEAR RELEASED: 2008
WHY THEY DIDN’T MAKE IT: These made our top 50 Dunk list, but compared to the classic Dunks that made the Aughts list, these just aren’t in the same league yet. If Nike continues to pump these out and keep the people excited, these might make our list in 2020.

SNEAKER: Nike Air Zoom Huarache 2k4
YEAR RELEASED: 2004
WHY THEY DIDN’T MAKE IT: Commenters complained that these weren’t on the list, but really, who wore these off-court? Not us or you, probably. For basketball they were great, but that’s where it stopped. Plus the Huarache 2k5 > Huarache 2k4 and the Hyperdunk that was #32 on our list are better than both styles.

SNEAKER: Solebox x New Balance “Purple Devil”
YEAR RELEASED: 2006
WHY THEY DIDN’T MAKE IT: This collab was one of the most critically-acclaimed New Balance releases, but it was one of those sneakers that no one knew where to get them in the United States—not even Flight Club has ‘em. It’s a great sneaker, but the sketchy distribution (only 300 made overseas) ruined it for us. If you scored a pair, you’re probably like the coolest person we don’t know.

SNEAKER: Nike Paris Opium 180
YEAR RELEASED: 2006
WHY THEY DIDN’T MAKE IT: We got some heat about not including these Opium-designed 180s, but it’s hard to debate that these were better than the Union 180s or the Nom de Guerre’s special make-ups 180—both of which made the list. There was some hype behind these, but they didn’t sell as well as expected, with some pairs even trickling into outlets in the U.S. after sitting on shelves

SNEAKER: Air Max Infrared 90s
YEAR RELEASED: 1990
WHY THEY DIDN’T MAKE IT: Umm…to the two commenters who gave us shit for this, look at the name of the sneaker. These were made in 1990 and the re-issues that came later were exactly the same.

SNEAKER: Nike Air ‘Eggplant’ Foamposite
YEAR RELEASED: 2009
WHY THEY DIDN’T MAKE IT: The Foamposite is a classic, and this colorway had people lining up this past year, but the sneaker was originally produced in 1997. If we put these on, we would have no argument for leaving all the Jordan re-issues off the list. Last time we’ll say it.

SNEAKER: Vans x Hosoi Sk8-Hi
YEAR RELEASED: 2007
WHY THEY DIDN’T MAKE IT: In terms of the Sk8-Hi, this collabo with skater Christian Hosoi, is widely considered one of the best make-ups of the last few years. It was on our top 101, but got cut in the edit. True story.

• To commemorate the June 1996 bout between Mexican boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez and then rising star Oscar De La Hoya, and to get in tight with the Mexico City sneaker stores before opening the Nike Sportswear shop in one of the craziest cities in the world, Nike dropped these puppies. A few pairs made their way stateside, but this one was mainly for the Latins.

WALE: “I think those were $200! The clear bottom, man. I remember watching the Arizona Wildcats play and Mike Bibby had them on in the final four and everybody was like, ‘What the hell are those?!’ It was so next level, you know what I’m saying? It felt like the future was now starting. It was like the Jetsons era as if it was the first step to flying cars. I really felt that way, so those definitely have to be on the list!”

AIR JORDAN 11 CONCORD

WALE: “They’re just the cleanest-looking shoe of all time. Clean! That was the first time when I was like, aight man, all the Jordans that are out…man I just want to look like Michael Jordan. I just want to look like Michael Jackson, Michael Jordan, I want to be the cleanest person in the world! Yeah the 11’s, there was something about them. Mike didn’t even sell nobody on those. It was like just looking at a shoe and knowing you have to have it. I have to bump the Jordan 3’s off the list because when they did the whole retro thing and certain artists started wearing them, I was like ‘Oh, never mind. I just can’t bang with these joints no more man!’ [Laughs.]“

TIFFANY & HEINEKEN SB DUNK (TIE)

WALE: I’m not really big on SBs no more because I just haven’t been satisfied with how they’ve been looking. The last really good SB was probably the Mork and Mindy or the Hawaii joints. Even the Freddy Krueger joints were dope but they never came out with them. Heinekens are great but the Tiffanys, man! I remember they came out and I was working. Those were definitely a camp-out shoe, but I wasn’t about to camp out. I never really did that, I just paid someone an extra hundred to have someone just sit there. Those [The Tiffanys] were like the uber-camp-out shoes. Like I said, I was working that day and I didn’t get them. I’ll never forget my man Dan came into work wearing them joints and I was like, ‘Man…I hate you right now.’ [Laughs.] You know what I’m saying? Because that was the last real dunk for SB that was next-level amazing. They tried to do a bunch of other things with dunks, but I was never really impressed with them.”

DEION SANDERS DIAMOND TURF 2

WALE:Everyone knows this is my favorite shoe. I was such the OD Deion Sanders fan. I used to play like him, I used to wear my face mask like him. I used to do the dance at practice and at the games and I remember seeing the commercial where they were like, ‘Get this shoe! Its Deion Sanders’ shoe!’ And they would show him like dancing, it was around Christmas time. Those were the best ones. They not even be the best looking, but what they represent to me is priceless. The red ones, if I could find them right now, I would pay anything for them. I’d give somebody a car, definitely. Small car, though.”

When we talked to Capo recently, he said he was going to rock a new pair of sneakers every day of the summer, and post a photo of them on his Twitter using Twitpic.
