Music Download It Now: Consequence “Movies On Demand” Mixtape

We’ve been waiting for Consequence to drop his Cons TV album for a minute now, but he’s holding us over with the “Movies On Demand” mixtape, which just dropped over at Nah Right. It has more guest appearances than an entire season of Curb—featuring Asher Roth, Rick Ross, Pharoahe Monch, Styles P, Common, Talib Kweli, Q-Tip, Kanye, Diddy, KiD CuDi, The LOX, John Legend & more.

ARTIST: Consequence
MIXTAPE: Movies On Demand
WHY IT’S WORTH THE DL: Cons keeps G.O.O.D. company—getting down with ATCQ since the age of 16, collaborating with Kanye and influencing his label-head’s flow. He’s delivered solid verses on tracks leaked last year like “Buggin Out 09′” and his “Whatever You Want” single.

PREVIEW: “Don’t Stand So Close To Me” f/ Styles P

Music King PIN: Jay Electronica’s Obsession With Blackberry Messenger

jayelect625
Jay Electronica and a few of his BBM friends.

Since getting his monumental “Exhibit C” record played on Hot 97 and enduring all of the accompanying challenger freestyles, Jay Electronica’s probably been collecting more industry contacts than Superhead at a DJ Khaled video shoot. The New Orleans rapper, who’s never applied to the industry’s standards of music release and promotion, has also managed to break new ground in fan-artist interaction, repeatedly posting his personal Blackberry Messenger (BBM) pin number to twitter (@JayElectronica), giving his Blackberry wielding followers, and the world at large, a way to contact him wherever he is, whenever they feel like it.

The idea seemed noble, if not masochistic, until Jay “Telephonica” began posting mystery pin numbers, alluding to posting the contacts of other celebs including Talib Kweli, famed music scribe Dream Hampton and even Diddy. The latest of these even came with a warning to “hurry and add because when they realize i did this they are gonna shut phone down.” Check out some of the incriminating tweets below, and let us know if you’ve successfully added him and actually conversed over BBM…

Music Interview: Waka Flocka Flame Talks “O Let’s Do It” Success & Brawl With Young Jeezy Associates

Waka_opener
Your first reaction when you heard his name was probably similar to ours. What the fuck is a Waka Flocka Flame? Now we know that 23-year-old Juaquin Malphurs is the newest artist in Gucci Mane’s burgeoning So Icey camp, and definitely is full of youthful and rowdy exuberance. The New York-born MC has already proven himself to be more than a weed carrier showing out on Gucci’s single, “Bingo,” as well providing arguably the biggest trap anthem in the last year with his breakout single, “O Let’s Do It.” Diddy even shouts him out on the remix.

Unfortunately, at a time when he should be celebrating knowing way too many people right now that he didn’t know last year, trouble has been tracking him like its got a GPS. In January, he was shot during an armed robbery. In the last two weeks alone, Waka was involved in a brawl with a group of Young Jeezy’s associates at the Atlanta sneaker spot, Walter’s, as well as eight teenagers being shot at a concert he performed at in Gary, Indiana. Complex caught up with Waka while he was on road doing shows and preparing his debut, Flockavelli, to see how Gucci is doing, find out about the scrap at Walter’s, and whether slowing down a little is something that’s crossed his mind.

Music Crash Course: 7 Pavement Songs You Need To Know

pavementlead
On Tuesday, ’90s alt-rock heroes Pavement released their greatest hits compilation Quarantine the Past, a rich double disc that’s 23 tracks deep with hits and fans favorites spanning the the band’s 10-year history. Devoted fans will surely have all the songs spread out among albums and re-issues, but the compilation works just as well as a highlight reel as it does a Pavement starter kit. And for those not as familiar with the Stockton, CA natives as they’d like to be, it couldn’t have come at a better time.

The band, who has not performed together since 1999, lit up music blogs across the web back in September when they announced they’d be reuniting for a handful of shows in NYC’s Central Park later this year. The shows reportedly sold out within minutes, prompting the group to expand the reunion to a full-on tour. While the anticipation for their NYC shows builds, we put together a beginner’s guide to the 7 Pavement songs you need to know…

Jim Jones and friends go in over “O Let’s Do It” on their new joint, and ironically, Wale just dropped a track sampling Wayne’s freestyle from the same beat. Sounds like a good line-up, right? Music Before They Blew Up: Young Jeezy’s 2001 Album As “Lil’ J”

As one of the most anticipated albums of 2010, for many it would seem like Young Jeezy’s Thug Motivation 103 just can’t come soon enough. Though currently slated for a June release, the album’s already endured repeated push-backs and the suspicious absence of an equally anticipated Trap or Die 2 mixtape with DJ Drama has only served to further the restlessness. There was a time, however, when our favorite trapper’s favorite trapper was releasing music to little to no acclaim as an independent artist.

Back in the summer of 2001, under the name “Lil’ J,” Young Jeezy released T.U.I.:Thuggin Under The Influence. The cover image, which shows a 23 year-old Jeezy modeling an oversized Rocawear polo and fitted over the du-rag in front of some luxury cars, is a fitting impression of the era and forthright rendering of someone who would grow into one of rap’s most credible voices. The project boasts production from Lil Jon as well as a rudimentary Shawty Redd, but Jeezy persists as a boy from Macon, Georgia trying his hardest to be heard over crunk’s deafening ascent. Hard copies, if they even exist, are few and far between, but the album is widely available through sketchier electronic measures. Listen to some tracks below to get a sense of what the Snowman sounded like before he blew up…

Music Buy It Now: Unreleased Jimi Hendrix “Valleys of Neptune” + Deluxe Reissues

hendrix_lead
There are a handful of artists—the Beatles, Tupac, Biggie—for whom the phrase “unreleased recordings” automatically elicits intense anticipation (ok, so maybe we’ve learned our lesson with ‘Pac by now). By virtue of being a) a confirmed studio rat, and b) having a career that only lasted four years and just three (!) studio albums, James Marshall “Jimi” Hendrix appears at or near the top of that list. Now the fiends will be sated (for the time being at least) with the latest Hendrix “album” Valleys of Neptune.

Twelve tracks long, Valleys features all unreleased music (albeit a few reworked versions of previously released tunes), primarily recorded in the first half of 1969 when Hendrix was grappling with the splintering of his first group, the Jimi Hendrix Experience. In addition, Experience Hendrix and Legacy Recordings are releasing deluxe reissues of the studio albums released in Jimi’s lifetime (Are You Experienced?, Axis: Bold As Love, Electric Ladyland, as well as the posthumous First Rays of the New Rising Sun), replete with the requisite turgid liner notes (”the unquenchable creative fire burning within the belly of the Experience…”), as well as much cooler “Making Of” DVDs. Had your fix? Get the Buy It Now links below…

Music Story To Tell: Jonathan Shecter Talks Biggie On Twitter

jon and biggie
Yesterday, March 9th, marked the anniversary of the late great Notorious B.I.G.’s death. Twitter was full of fans and industry heads alike paying their homage; quoting verses, dropping the #ripbig hashtag, and sharing their favorite Biggie related memories.
