When you can buy hermetically sealed tomatoes in February, it’s easy to forget that edible things come from seed, soil, sun, and time. But ask your best taste buds and they’ll tell you—a freshly harvested tomato off the vine in August beats his February cousin every day of the week (and twice on Sunday if you’re making gazpacho). It’s 2010, and it’s time to stop ignoring how shady factory farms are and get with locally and seasonally grown food.
But becoming a loca-vore doesn’t necessitate a complete lifestyle upheaval. Sure, there are farmers markets and CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) subscriptions, but you can also find restaurants that do the work for you and source hormone-free, grass-fed proteins. Labor Day means the end of summer, but it also marks the beginning of harvest season here in the dear ol’ Northern Hemisphere. Get back to the earth without getting your hands dirty this weekend with our guide to our 5 favorite farm-to-table restaurants.

NAME: Canon PowerShot S95
PRICE: $399
THE BACK STORY: If you were busy fumbling with your party-photo website last August, there is a chance you missed hearing about the quiet storm that was the Canon PowerShot S90, a sleek, all-black powerhouse with a fast lens, full manual control, RAW capability, and ultra-pocketability. Canon had a winner on its hands, and the company is wasting no time in upgrading its revolutionary snap-cam. We took the Powershot S95 for a test drive. Truth be told, a blind man could tell you that NASCAR is racially unbalanced. There have been books written about how difficult it is for a minority to break into America’s premier racing league. Well, now things are starting to look a bit better for kids looking to race stock cars at a professional level. NASCAR recently implemented a new diversity program with the intent of bringing more color into the country’s second most popular sporting league. Not only that, BET has teamed up with Revolution Racing to bring a lucky and talented minority into NASCAR through a new reality show, Changing Lanes. Airing on BET on Wednesday nights at 8 p.m., the show will follow a group of young men fighting for a coveted NASCAR seat. We caught up with one of the competitors, 21-year-old Florida native Michael Cherry, to talk about how he got into racing, his views on NASCAR, being on the show, and why he wants a Subaru…

Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em has got to be one of the most polarizing figures in hip-hop today. On the one hand, he’s got millions of adoring fans who follow him on Twitter, buy his ringtones, and help make his songs hits (he’s had five Top 40 hits and counting). On the other hand, he’s routinely blamed for the demise of hip-hop by the likes of Ice-T, Method Man, and blog commenters everywhere. And let’s not even get into the video that recently surfaced of groupie extraordinaire Kat Stacks chilling with Soulja Boy in his hotel room with what appeared to be cocaine nearby. That’s why we put together Chain Reaction: A History of Soulja Boy’s Greatest Chains—because if you hate him, you can call his chains ignorant, and if you love him, you’ll admire his pretty boy swag. Ayyyeee!

Yeah, it’s a been rocky year for Cheryl Cole. The 27-year-old brunette/blonde singer from England has been a tabloid regular (in the U.K., at least) because of her messy divorce from soccer star (and serial adulterer) Ashley Cole. Making matters worse, she contracted malaria (malaria!) during a summer holiday in Tanzania. Ouch. BUT things are starting to look up: Cheryl is back as a judge alongside Simon Cowell for the new season of Britain’s ever-popular The X Factor, with rumors that she may join the U.S. cast when the show arrives here next year; she’s been name-dropped by Justin Bieber as a possible co-star in his vision of a Grease remake; and she’s recently been spotted getting her groove back with a new man. And oh yeah: She’s still one of the baddest chicks in the world, full stop. So, to kick off your Labor Day weekend, have a gander at Cheryl Cole’s Hottest Pics—and ask Ashley Cole: What the fuck were you thinkin’, mate?

Our new poll focuses on recently released product that is beginning to have an impact on our world.
We ask readers one simple question: You gonna cop it or not?
From the “Japan did it first” file, five-toed shoes and toe socks have walked—with maximum anatomic efficiency, natch—into America. Yeah, it may be a bit off-putting to see your little piggies all segregated beneath fabric, but the five-toed movement is as much about function as form. (Just ask Dice-K.) The Vibram FiveFingers shoes stimulate your feet/leg muscles and are said to improve balance, agility, and posture. Meanwhile, Injinji has a full line of toe socks in different colorways that offer a multitude of benefits, including post-exercise recovery and foot therapy. There’s all that, plus the fact that some people just like feeling that barefoot steez at all times, word to Ethiopian marathon runners. So, then: Cop It Or Not? See below to vote, for Buy It Now info, and to leave your own $0.02 in the comments…

You know actor Charlie Day best as dim-witted bar janitor Charlie “Green Man” Kelly on FX’s laugher It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which returns for a sixth season on September 16, but this weekend you can see him on the big screen playing Justin Long’s friend in the new rom-com Going the Distance. Generally speaking, we’re not fans of the genre, but with Day on board you’ll no doubt be seeing this one in the next edition of our list of romantic comedies that don’t suck. To mark his move to movies, Complex caught up with Day for the “Mantras” feature in our August/September issue (see the Lindsay Lohan, T.I., and B.o.B. covers on stands now). Keep reading to see the rules that he lives his life by…

These drive-up sex stalls already exist in the German cities of Essen and Cologne, and Zurich may be next in line for the revolutionary fence structure that provides “a way to let prostitutes work in a more discreet environment.” Momma always said discretion was key. Guess this is what she was talking about. [Daily Mail via World's Best Ever]
