The 25 Greatest No Limit Songs Of All Time2:10 pm | Monday, June 7th, 2010

In anticipation of the 2010 VH1 Hip Hop Honors: The Dirty South, which airs on June 7, Complex and Miss Info have teamed with the network to celebrate this year’s honorees with exclusive coverage.

Master P was nothing if not a visionary. After toiling in the West Coast underground for years and achieving moderate success, P moved back to his birthplace of New Orleans and scooped up the finest rap talent the city had to offer. He repackaged them (in an assembly line fashion that would have made Berry Gordy proud) and sold his new sound back to young America. Though No Limit wasn’t the first Southern label to gain national attention, they proved to be the most influential of the region’s breakthrough acts, setting both a business model and an aesthetic for the artists and labels that followed. P brought Louisiana hip-hop to the radio and lined the racks of Sam Goodys everywhere with blindingly blingish Pen N Pixel covers, releasing well over 100 albums during a relatively short reign. Though the label fizzled by the early part of the century (with most of the label’s core roster ending up dead, in jail, or on Nickelodeon), the catalog and legacy still stands, a reminder of a time when the phrase “ugghhh” still had meaning. In preparation for the VH1 Hip-Hop Honors, Complex looks back at 25 of The Tank’s greatest shots…

    • DGtheEnigma June 7, 2010 at 4:29 pm

Overall, this is a decent list a best. I figured it would be tough considering No Limit will go down arguably as the most underrated record label of all time.

But, I think anyone in the South/Midwest will tell you there are some true gems from No Limit’s era missing.

From 1996-1999 (maybe even 2000 depending on who you ask), No Limit had a helluva run.

    • N$R June 7, 2010 at 5:06 pm

No Lil’ Romeo? This is an outrage!

But seriously, this is a good list. I would have pesonally included several more Mac songs, but still a solid top 25. Same with the Rap-A-Lot 25 from a week ago.

    • peeda June 7, 2010 at 6:22 pm

No “Woof” No “Take My Pain” No “Party Dont Stop” No “Come On” Fail. some good choices but some missed the mark!

It’s funny, but No Limit weren’t known for the lyrics so much as the beats. They had the team down there Beats By the Pound. Mo B. Dick was the man down there. Has a song with 8Ball and MJG called Right Now that has the same sound as the old No Limit

    • Ashley June 8, 2010 at 9:02 am

Any song with the words “Mama, pray for your baby”. That’s at least 150 right there.

Seriously, the songs “Unpredictable” by Mystikal, “I’m a Soldier” by Silkk Da Shocker, “you and me” by Sons of Funk (Killer R&B), “Stress” by Kane & Abel, “I Hate the Way I Live” by Serv-on would have made my list.
