Rapper Punch-Out! A History Of Hip-Hop Snuffs

In weekend rap news, Joe Budden got into a physical confrontation with another rapper’s entourage this weekend. Okay, no sugarcoating, the beef-loving rapper got snuffed by one of Raekwon’s goons backstage on the L.A. stop of the Rock The Bells tour. Shortly after, Joey took to the increasingly ubiquitous Ustream service to tell his side of the story. Sure the Ustream factor of catching a hip-hopper getting punched may be new, but rappers have been putting hands on each (II) other for years. WHO SNUFFED: Keith Murray
WHO GOT SNUFFED: Prodigy
• Keith Murray felt like Prodigy was dissing Def Squad when the Queens rapper took shots at MCs who only rap about weed and “space shit” on The Infamous. The feud was settled at an Onyx video shoot only for it escalate again in 1996 when P rapped “some pussy niggas feeling guilty about some space shit” on LL Cool’s posse cut (featuring Keith Murray) “I Shot Ya.” Murray reportedly proceeded to rock Prodigy in the face, possibly trying to stab his brain with his nosebone, when the two crossed paths at legendary NYC venue Tunnel shortly thereafter. Continuing the trend of sonning P, Saigon snuffed Prodigy onstage at his own show a decade later.

WHO SNUFFED: Wreckx-N-Effect
WHO GOT SNUFFED: Q-Tip
• New Jack Swing was like the Auto-Tune of the early ’90s, widely popular and widely hated on at the same time. Many took shots at the genre, but Teddy Riley and his group Wreckx-N-Effect made an example of Q-Tip in retaliation to Phife’s “strictly hardcore tracks, not a New Jack Swing” line on ATCQ’s “Jazz (We’ve Got).” True to their name, one of Tip’s eyes was wrecked and he was forced to wear a ski mask in the “Hot Sex” video. Ouchy.

WHO SNUFFED: Maino
WHO GOT SNUFFED: Yung Berg
• No deep beef history here. While on tour together last summer, Yung Berg got wind of some allegedly disrespectful comments from Maino and approached him in a nightclub about “talking reckless.” Maino didn’t take well to Berg’s aggressive approach and resulted to “disciplinary tactics,” slapping the young rapper in the face. Disgruntled rapper or confrontational fan, no one is safe from Maino’s open palm.

WHO SNUFFED: 50 Cent
WHO GOT SNUFFED: Ja Rule
• What would any list of hip-hop altercations be without these two? Their list of confrontations seems endless, but an actual snuffing was the center of only one particular incident. Back in 1999, both artists were booked on the same bill in Atlanta and approached one another at a hotel they were both staying at. What started as a supposed peace talk quickly escalated and led to Curtis socking Jeffrey. Ja maintains that he hit 50 back immediately. Righttt.

WHO GOT SNUFFED: Ras Kass
• Like Joe Budden, The Game is no stranger to beef, but unlike Joe, The Game didn’t have to hold an ice pack on his face after this incident. Ras Kass did though. When Jayceon approached him in a club about some disrespectful lyrics, Ras left with a black eye.

WHO SNUFFED: Papoose
WHO GOT SNUFFED: Fat Joe
• When 50 Cent went on NYC radio to clown Fat Joe early last year, station guests (and couple) Papoose and Remy Ma laughed along. This prompted Fat Joe to approach Papoose backstage at a North Carolina concert soon after, asking the rapper, “You got a problem with me?” Supposedly, Papoose said that he didn’t and asked Joe the same question. When Joe made it clear that he did have a problem, Papoose allegedly punched him in the face twice.

WHO GOT SNUFFED: Mac Breezy
• No explanation has been offered for this incident since this video surfaced, but it looks like Gucci just got tired of his female artist nagging him for stage time.

WHO SNUFFED: Tru Life
WHO GOT SNUFFED: Cam’ron
• Despite all the internal shifting, tensions have been riding high between Rocafella and Dip Set in some form or another for years. Tru Life took matters into his own hands when he allegedly smacked Killa Cam outside of Club Stereo two years ago.

WHO GOT SNUFFED: Mike Jones
• Straight from Trae’s mouth: “He got it for running his mouth too much.” Trae saw Mike Jones at the Ozone Awards almost exactly a year ago and clocked him for “running around [Houston] flagging” without the proper credentials. Gully.

WHO SNUFFED: T.I.
WHO GOT SNUFFED: Chaka Zulu
• Not exactly rapper-on-rapper violence, but when T.I. punched Chaka Zulu in the face during a Kevin Liles luncheon in 2007, it most likely had something to do with his ongoing feud with Ludacris, who Zulu manages. This would never happen nowadays, though. That old T.I. is “dead and gone.”

• Sonic put his girl’s business in the streets during a freestyle battle against her and got clocked in the grill, causing him to lose his rings upon contact. Just another fail in the career of Charles Hamilton.
