Wake N’ Watch: The Best Scene From Stallone’s “Cobra”

Fresh off Rambo and three straight Rocky movies, Sylvester Stallone was pretty much running shit in the mid-’80s. His next big project was all set: Beverly Hills Cop. But when Sly got the script, he hated the wise-cracking comedic role, so he submitted his own gritty, action-packed version of the story. “By the time I was done, it looked like the opening scene from Saving Private Ryan on the beaches of Normandy,” he remembers. Needless to say, the studio decided to go with the funny black guy from SNL instead.

But what happened to Stallone’s too-gritty-for-the-suits cop screenplay? After a few years, it surfaced in the form of Cobra. We just named this slept-on 1986 gem the #50 Greatest Action Movie Of All-Time, and all you need to do is watch the scene above to understand why. Lt. Marion Cobretti saves supermarket hostages from a crazy gunman by telling snarky one-liners? Ironically, this 5-minute scene might be funnier than anything Axel Foley ever said.
