Friday Faceoff: Planet XBox 360 & Complex Debate The Best Video Game Movie Adaptations Of All Time

Each week in the Friday Faceoff, the editors of Complex will have an open debate with one of the other websites in the Complex Media Network on a timely topic. We encourage everyone to chime in with comments about our choices, whether you agree or disagree. Don’t worry, we can take a sneak-diss or two.

Last week, we talked 2009 sneakers with NiceKicks. This week, we’re going up against Planet XBox 360, whose video game guru Eric M. Bush was kind enough to debate history’s best movies that were adapted from video games. It wasn’t easy, because as it turns out, most of them are crappy.

With big-screen versions of high profile games like Prince of Persia and Metal Gear Solid in the works, we have high hopes for the genre’s future, even if it did get off to a rocky start in 1993 with the release of the super-flop Super Mario Brothers. But they haven’t all been bad. Take a look back at the best with our top 5 debate…

PLANET XBOX 360 #5 PICK: Max Payne (2008)

Planet XBox 360 Says: This makes the list only because it was discovered that Mark Wahlberg had his assistant play through the action game for research, because he was “too cool.”

Complex says: Maybe they should have given the lead to Marky Mark’s assistant instead? Visually the movie was sick, but as huge fans of the original series, this turd was a massive let down for us. It seemed like a B-movie in every way except for the cinematography.

COMPLEX #5 PICK: Hitman (2007)

Complex Says: This one did a decent job of staying faithful to the original game, while still being entertaining. Our only complaint was the casting of lead actor Timothy Olyphant—if they had gotten Jason Statham, this one would have been a hit.

Planet XBox 360 Says: I can remember the exact day I saw Hitman in the theaters, not because of the quality of the film adaptation but because I found the most-disgusting hair in my mouth that had transferred from my popcorn container.

You guys forgot about the abysmal Doom film as well as the corny ass Super Mario Movie. The Resident Evil series as a whole stayed pretty true to it’s gaming roots. Good choice making it # 1

I’m going to have to disagree with the poster who said the Street Fighter movie was crap.

Jean Claude saves the world…nothing more needs to be said about why that movie was amazing.
