The 5 Biggest Injustices of the BCS Era

One of these coaches may be holding the wrong trophy.
So the final college football contest of the season kicks off Thursday night and it looks like it’ll be great: the Oklahoma Sooners vs. the Florida Gators. But don’t get it twisted: it ain’t college football’s national championship. That’s because the champion has already been crowned and it’s USC. Or Utah. Or Texas.
And therein lies the problem with college football’s BCS National Championship Game (the “final contest” mentioned above). It features two teams with one loss, but not the sole undefeated team in the game (Utah). The most dominant team in the country (USC) won’t be playing in it. And Oklahoma, which lost to Texas on a neutral field earlier this year, will. We know it’s an old argument (even the new Prez is in favor of a playoff system), but just in case you’re one of those lobotomized morons that thinks the BCS works, here’s a list of the 5 biggest eff-ups of the BCS era.

You missed the BIGGEST injustice of the BCS-era…the 2004 Utah Utes. They were undefeated, not one team came within 2 touchdowns of them all year (and they played their second stringers the entire second half of most games). When NO ONE comes within 2 touchdowns of you all year, how can you just hand the trophy to someone else. USC, Auburn, and Utah were all deserving that year. Utah should have been matched up with Auburn so that either Utah or Auburn had a competing claim to the National Title, along with USC.

Utah Fans, you went undefeated in the MOUNTAIN WEST CONF. not a major confrence, that would have been like throwing Boise State in the National title game. You would have thought that was rediculous, well guess what so is Utah playing in the title game! No one cares about Utah outside of Utah. You play in a crap hole confrence where any Big 12, SEC or PAC10 team could dominate year in and year out. Be glad you beat Bama the only real game you had all year. And Don’t say BYU or TCU. TCU barely Beat Boise State. and BYU lost and they sucked anyway. Because they’re from your crappy confrence! Their is a BCS injustice here, but it’s certainly not UTAH It’s Texas. But the fact remains that’s there is a reason they don’t place MOUNTAIN WEST teams in a Title position, cuz They’re MOUNTAIN WEST teams!

I didn’t realize that the 2007 Sugar Bowl wasn’t a BCS Bowl Game…who knew…apparently this blogger did

What about Auburn in 2004? They shithammered everyone they played, then had to watch chokelahoma get raped by USC. The bcs sucks ass.

I can’t believe you left off the 2003 fiasco when USC finished the regular season as a consensus #1 in both the Coach’s & AP Polls but were relegated to the Rose Bowl & a split national title with LSU.
That’s quite an oversight.
The Slovak January 7, 2009 at 2:39 pm
all you Utah, Boise St, small conference haters.
I don’t seem to see the big bad SEC, PAC 10 or Big 12 in any hurry to travel to Utah, Boise, Salt Lake, etc to play one of these teams during the season, how about Texas run up to Utah for a 2nd or 3rd game of the season, HMMMMM, no hurry is there. How about heading up to the BLUE turf Alabama, Florida, Oklahoma (that’s right, the broncos already took care of sooner nation)

What about the 2003/2004 BCS title game where USC was ranked #1 in the polls but LSU & Oklahoma played for the championship. There was a split #1 decision that the BCS was supposed to eliminate.

This has got to be one of the dumbest lists I’ve ever read.
First off, how’d that work for Cal in 2004 after being left out of the Rose Bowl after Mack Brown ‘whined’ Texas in? Oh yeah, they got housed by a Texas Tech team that UT beat badly on the road earlier in the year.
Also, Colorado beat Texas to win the Big XII in 2004, not Nebraska.
By the way, the 2007 Georgia squad did go to a BCS game, it’s called the Sugar Bowl.
How can you leave out Auburn in 2004? Not only missing a shot at the championship, but not even getting a split is hands down the biggest travesty in the BCS era.
phil January 7, 2009 at 4:33 pm
First off the second place team in 2007 (Georgia) did play in a BCS bowl gam, the sugar bowl, so there goes that argument. Second, didnt LSU lose after ohio state and back its own way into the game with 2 losses after USC lost?
Bill January 7, 2009 at 5:24 pm
Also in the mix in 2000 should have been 11-1 Oregon State, who’s only loss was 33-30 on the road at Washington. The Beavers absolutely demolished a 10-2 Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl, 41-9. That OSU squad featured All-American Ken Simington at tailback and one of the best receiving tandems in college football, future NFL All-Pros T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Chad (Ocho Cinco) Johnson.

Slovak:
Oregon state has played two home & away series with Boise State in the last few year, and just finished a home & away with Utah.
billybob January 7, 2009 at 8:41 pm
And how did they do?
Again Mountain West out does the BCS conference schools!
jus10 January 7, 2009 at 11:17 pm
i wouldnt call 13-2 hammered…….it was a bad game on both sides.
andy January 8, 2009 at 2:44 am
Hey Slovak you Jack ASS why don’t you get your info straight. Oregon Played Boise state at home this season and barely lost. And Oregon State played Utah @ Utah and Barely lost. Next Season Oregon Plays both Utah @ Utah and Boise State @ Boise State. SO I would say that’s about as ruching off as it gets. The reason no one wastes time usually and the reason that they arent BCS confrences isnt because of the one team thats good in the confrence i.e Utah in MW or Boise state in WAC It’s the other terrible teams they pay in confrence that get them that undefeated record year in and out. Like I said before put a BCS confrence team in The MW or WAC and they would run the table every year. Sorry if that get’s you small confrence guys all butt hurt but that’s the fact. Being the best in The Mountain West or WAC is like being the coolest kid with down syndrome. Good on ya Utah you beat Alabama Good on Ya you beat an SEC team. Just wait til next season, Oregon’s Comin’ Boise State and Utah!!!

Umm the number of votes for Texas actually went down after Mack’s comments in 2004. Texas made it into the Rose Bowl based on changes in the computer numbers which made up for the small dip in votes.
Also, the AP didn’t back out of the BCS for this. It was because of the whole USC controversy, and the fact that the AP didn’t want to be contractually obliged to vote for a certain team.
