I'm not going to say who ever wrote this sucks or is stupid or even that they are right. BUT this list shows biased and it's about as accurate as shooting a deer in pitch black. It's based on opinon, not fact. But isn't that the idea? If they make your ears bleed, don't listen to them.

Oh, I forgot, you should also listen to Charles Manson. He never sold out either!

I gag at you guys who have nothing better to base the value of your existence on other than the fact that you like a certain band over another. The truth of the matter is, virtually 100% of the people in the world don't give a shit about your pitiful little clique of arrogance. Either listen or don't but do yourself a favor and actually DO something worthwhile. Your little morsel of elitism is just plain tired and nobody, and I mean nobody, is impressed by it.

Anyone who listens to anyone but G.G. Allin has seriously sold out to the system. He is the only one who never did.

To the people defending these corporation-created abscesses that we, regretfully, call "music":
Obviously you've been listening a bit too distantly. I admit, as a child listening to these bands, I didn't think much of their sound, primarily because they all sounded the same (with the exception of Daughtry, which was not formed at the time). however, referring to these generic, moneybagging fools as artists is a shame. The real artists of today's world of music range from Radiohead to Saul Williams, Conor Oberst to of Montreal, Cat Power to Dave Matthews Band, Bjork to Sufjan Stevens.

In my opinion, it isn't even fair to compare the bands I mentioned (off the top of my head) to these uncreative assholes, as they're just akin to advertising: aimed at a certain group of people solely to make money. The music, if you can call it that, that they (and by they I chiefly mean their producers and writers who create their power-chord driven riffs and stale lyrics) create is bland and cookie-cutter. Nothing is refreshing with every one of these new Pop-Rock bands.

Speaking from my point of view, that is, someone who does *attempt* to write music and play instrument(s), they're not special. I understand why they appeal to so many though, with their amount of angst that is just tolerable for soccer mom's, etc.

/endrant (which as composed on absurd amounts of coffee, so please bear with me.)

...so these are the guys that ruthlessly murdered ska...

but seriously.
Listen:

most bands people are familiar with are, how do I say this?

usually uncreative, and innately (obviously really) familiar.

And So on.

can we all agree that perhaps most bands nowadays are self obsessed at best? Name a song that you heard today. It's probably about personal issues, a philanthropic cause(image yes?), or sexy escapades.

Attention seeking bullshit.

And so on.

It's somewhat hard to find an ideal. More complaints, or endorsements, or boring anecdotes.

I have enough of those as it is.

There is no though as to why. It all is around the fact that everything is.

This is a natural cycle in history, The last period of transcendentalism started in the late 50s and ended in mid 70s, and was replaced by existentialism.

The real argument of this is not "douchiness". "Douchiness" is a rhetorical strategy.

Perhaps, we should look at this as a desperate claim for philosophical speculation above descriptive observation?

There is no "radio conspiracy" here people. The reason a band becomes popular is they make music that appeals to the masses. Who the fuck cares? Get off your bandwagon, stop your bellyaching about Nickelback, and shut the fuck up.

Are you kidding me? Reading the responses on this list cracks me up. If you don't like these bands, don’t listen to them but don't slam people that do. Pull the quarter out of your ass and loosen up. Sometimes life is just about having fun.

I am not about to sit here and lie saying that I have never enjoyed a 3 doors down song or a Nickleback one, the first ones to come out, where ok because they were fresh, however it is true that they have all followed a pattern and since its just become rubbish.
Particularly, I much rather listen to bands like RHCP, the offspring, Metallica, Aerosmith, Alice in Chains, or even the Foo Fighters depending on your genre and not to copy other mentioned above.
In addition I'd like to say that a band I think deserves to be there is Green Day, they have become total garbage, they went from being an "icon of a generation" if they can be called that, into some mix of emo kids and political crap that stopped being music, but again, those are my two cents, and people should not be that offended if others dont like them. Just like they wont see me at their concerts, I am sure that you wont find Dustin at a Daughtry one etc...

i agree with pretty much all of this. in fact, here's proof that nickelback recycles its own songs:
http://www.megaswf.com/view/ae5be0fc5f3cc7b1ca122edffe6489b1.html

those of you defending nickelback: i'm sorry, but FAIL. see above link.

those of you who listen to the radio: stop listening to the radio. don't you get tired of listening to the same 20 "hit" songs on the station's shuffle list? the way i began to expand my musical awareness was by searching the darkest corners of the internet (as well as my mom's record collection), and pirating songs by bands i'd never heard before. there's a thrill in taking the initiative to seek out new music (sometimes hits, sometimes misses), rather than being passively fed shit by the radio. it distinguishes the true music lovers from people who listen to music because it's playing at a party. people who have a passion for music are willing to go out and seek more.

those of you calling us "elitist" and "jealous": we are not elitists just because we have taken the aforementioned initiative to find something different, and we are not jealous just because nickelback is given millions for scrap-all talent and adored by a bunch of dumbasses. in fact, we might be tempted to call YOU a bunch of lazy fucks, too lazy to step beyond the confines of what is being marketed to you. it's like the step up from TV dinners to home-cooked meals: you have to learn to cook first and it takes more time and effort to prepare, but once you get it down, everything tastes better, and you will never go back to those shitty TV dinners again. as a result, a lot of radio music has found its way into my trash can. it's not because i'm an elitist, or that i stopped liking bands because they're popular. it's just that when you compare nickelback (or any of those bands) with the genius of say, david bowie or tool (they make some radio time, but far less than any of the above), the latter just "taste" better. their music and lyrics are just more pleasing, more moving, more inspiring. they're just fucking better.

to those of you ragging because we're not picking on pop, or who think we like pop because we don't like these guys: please, the rock vs. rap vs. pop argument is so dead. as someone above said, at least rappers and pop stars aren't pretending to be anything more than rappers and pop stars. they have a different set of characteristics to be judged by. the douches above pretend to be "artists" because they can play a few chords and string a rhyming lyric about their ex-girlfriend together.

to you who wrote the article: there should have been a longer list.

to ambeeeant: your comment is made of win. i, too, listen to music that hasn't been recorded yet; but i am also fond of music by bands that don't exist yet as well. :D

Kudos to you for being dead on with this list. Everytime a Nickleback song comes on the radio, I want to kill someone. The hatred that I have for them along with 3 doors down is equal - they both are the lamest, most corporate, awful bottom feeding bands that I have ever had the displeasure of listening to. Getting to Creed - when I hear people compare that f'ing lame ass jack ass singer with Eddie Vedder - I want to again kill people! How people can even put a band like Creed in the same sentence as a band like Pearl Jam is beyond my capability to comprehend. All of these bands should be taken out back and beaten - they are singlehandedly ruining music for generations to come!! Oh yeah -one more thing -for those of you defending these bands and calling the author of this list a music elitist - guess what? He is right and your music taste sucks! You probably love CSI Miami and Two and a half men too!

I am mortally offended that Creed was not given the number one slot on this list. Don't get me wrong, ALL of these douches worked hard to earn their position on the list. However, Creed really goes above and beyond when it comes to douchery.

Hinder is missing from this list!!! All these bands blow!

I cant even put the bands I respect on the same page with these douchewads! This is what is ruining the youth of America! This corporate rock bullshit! It actually angers me a great deal that these bands are played on the radio while true talent goes unnoticed! If you want a good playlist go here: http://www.playlist.com/user/1314859/view
Soon I will have a radio station on the internet and people that actually appreciate good music with depth will have to suffer no more!

Tell em.
All these bands have absolutely no talent in songwriting.
Though I will agree that Creed has good guitarists. But they got ruined by a terrible poser front-man.

Nickleback needs to get anal raped by a razor blade. Along with all the rednecks who actually think they're actually good. Lolz. Almost makes me sick when I see they're up in the top 10 bestseller lists.

Want good music? Check Neutral Milk Hotel. Or Radiohead. Or the Arcade Fire. Or Explosions in the Sky. Or Dream Theater. Or Iron and Wine.

But especially Neutral Milk Hotel.
