The History Of Gay Comic Book Superheroes

STARMAN (DC)
This alien will bang anybody because in space they don’t see gender. And David Bowie only slept with dudes when he was Ziggy Stardust.

ELEMENT LAD (DC)
In the ultimate pokey doke, his girlfriend Shvaughn revealed that she was actually a dude named Sean who took female hormones so he could be with him. The Lad shrugged it off because love is love. And he was kinda gay anyway.

There’s also Atole from the new X-Men and Wiccan and Hulkling from the new adventures, IIRC.

What about Apollo and Midnighter?
Johnny November 15, 2008 at 2:22 pm
Wow, dude. Not only were some of your comments pretty bigoted (”based out of San Francisco”, “Bareback is the only way this cowboy knows how to ride”, “he was kinda gay anyway”), but also unfounded (Aquaman? really). You seem to know so much about the lifestyle, at least the stereotypes. However next time you should do a little more reading up on the subject; I suggest a couple books without pictures.
Hawkeye November 15, 2008 at 2:37 pm
Colossus was gay in the Marvel Ultimate series.

I think they meant gay in the literal sense, not the pejorative. And yes, you can most definitely be bad-ass and bang people of the same sex. Case in point, Omar from the Wire, and Steve McQueen before him.

I’d say this article is just throwing around more of the thinly veiled ignorance I hear everyday everywhere I go, but it wasn’t very thinly veiled.

So, is this going to be a superhero that happens to be gay or a gay person that happens to be a superhero? I’d like to see a gay person portrayed as something more than their orientation for once.
jay November 15, 2008 at 10:13 pm
what about silhouette, hooded justice and captain metropolis? i know you ignored indies, but watchmen was a dc book…why the snub?
Aaron November 16, 2008 at 1:19 am
Aquaman gay?!
Your an idiot, and know nothing about comic books.
belial7809 November 16, 2008 at 3:21 pm
I always thought the human torch was gay, one of his catch phrases was “Flame On!”;) And then there he would go just a flamin across the city.
the one November 16, 2008 at 6:37 pm
this is a terrible list. do better research before creating this waste of time and space.
anole freak November 17, 2008 at 8:02 pm
its ANOLE from the Young X -Men and Wiccan and Hulkling are from the Young Avengers.
Tom November 17, 2008 at 8:34 pm
What a terrible list of “lol teh gays” puns. The “and now let us celebrate how enlightened we all are” intro was a nice touch.
