Racist Celebrity Scandals That Turned Out To Be Fake

Despite what you may think, we at Complex actually understand what journalism is about. And journalism is not putting out a detail-less and unsubstantiated blog post claiming that Puff’s favorite white boy Donnie Klang went on the radio and talked sideways about how “it’s really hard to work with black people in general.”
We love watching white people jump through hoops to deny being racists, so we were happy to see the Original Klangsta deny the whole thing on his blog. But this isn’t the first time a public figure has had to deal with unfounded racistification (yeah, we made that up). Don’t believe us? We rounded up six examples, so put on your gratuitous-outrage caps and get readin’…

TOMMY HILFIGER HATES BLACK PEOPLE WEARING HIS CLOTHES
This is the great-grandaddy of them all. Apaprently, Tommy Hil went on Oprah and said something about how his clothes were made for upper-class white people and if he had known that black folks and Asians and Hispanics and Jews would love them so much, he wouldn’t have made such awesome clothes. Only problem? He’d never been on Oprah. And even after Oprah invited him on for the express purpose of debunking the rumors, they still manage to dog him to this very day. Grand Puba is still heartbroken.

NO, LIZ CLAIBORNE HATES BLACK PEOPLE WEARING HER CLOTHES
Not only did Liz Claiborne also (not) go on Oprah and talk greasy, the rumor back in the early '90s was strong enough for Spike Lee to repeat it as gospel in an Esquire interview. Oh, and she donates some of her profits to the Church of Satan. Just like John McCain! See? That’s how rumors get started.

NO, TIMBERLAND HATES BLACK PEOPLE WEARING THEIR BOOTS
Because their CEO was president of the KKK! Got the pattern yet? This one got mixed in with a fake Maya Angelou poem that was making the rounds on the intert00bz. Now you know why Timberland started making those “Give Racism the Boot” t-shirts. Also, the KKK has presidents? Are Imperial Grand Wizards not in style anymore?

I loved this post and thank you Complex for clearing up all the confusion surrounding all of these urban myths. I HOPE now that we have a black president and a great multi-racial band like KONGCRETE we can be more open about our racial dilemas and finally make racism a thing of the past.
