Tami Chynn Talks Akon Collabos & Jamaican Tabloids

Complex: How do you feel towards to those people who didn’t accept you at first?

Tami Chynn: Well, I don’t really think about them. Jamaicans are the best, they’re very open and outspoken. People who would come to me, and express their love for my music would as much express their dislike for it. I’ve never really taken it that seriously. I’m more interested if you like it. If you don’t like it, fair enough. Everybody can’t love you, that’s for sure. If they did, it’d be a boring fucking world. It’s far more interesting to have haters. They write about it everyday. Tabloids are alive and well, are they not? Because they love to hate.

Complex: Do they have Jamaican tabloids?

Tami Chynn: Yeah, and I’m in them. (Laughs) My dad called me one time and was like, “Oh my God, you’re pregnant?” I said, “Get a grip.”

Complex: Who do they pair you up with?

Tami Chynn: Just other female Jamaicans. I mostly get paired up against my sister because she’s my sister'she’s a singer.

Complex: Tessanne Chynn?

Tami Chynn: That’s the only reason why. We don’t do the same type of music, we don’t look the same, we’re not in the same category on any scale.

Complex: What’s the biggest scandal that they’ve tried to fabricate?

Tami Chynn: You know, the usual…[Laughs]. Our tabloids are like one page out of the newspaper. It’s called Chat.

Complex: We have Page Six.

Tami Chynn: We have page two. Page two is more about the social scene. People would be shocked to know how first world Jamaica is. You’d be surprised to see how people in Jamaica watch The Hills. Yes there’s the very third world parts of Jamaica, you might get desensitized, but you can't escape it'it’s what keeps you humble.
