Art Installation Proves This “Complex Sh*t” Is No Joke

When the shit starts flyin,’ it’s good to have a really good umbrella. Nobody knows this ancient aphorism better than the citizenry of Berne, Switzerland.
Since last year, “Complex Shit,” an inflatable sculpture by American artist Paul McCarthy resembling a giant pile of dog turd, has been on display at the Paul Klee Centre in Berne. On display, that is, until last week, when a gust of wind picked that shit up and blew it 200 yards, clipping power lines and breaking a greenhouse window and likely scaring the living shit out of the local populace before being deposited on the lawn of a children’s home (the kids are rumored to have exclaimed “Damn, that shit was close,” when the sculpture finally came to a stop). “When the shit hits the fan,” “keep that shit to yourself,” “it’s a shitstorm out there,”: pick your own metaphor, they all apply. Check after the jump for an example of McCarthy’s slightly less shitty work (i.e. his current exhibition at the ShitWhitney Museum in New York ShitCity).
