Long live the Korean pop scene, where nobody really cares that much about authenticity'or even singing talent for that matter'as long as the girls look cute and the songs are catchy.
American girl groups like Danity Kane and the Pussycat Dolls have to throw on their sluttiest getup to grab anybody's attention, but in Korea, girl pop stars can find success by just singing mindless ditties in sugary voices while executing the simplest of non-sexual dance steps. See, that's the thing'the more you sell a product as overtly sexy, the less sexy it becomes. But push a product as “cute” and “innocent” and “pure”'well now you've piqued our predatory instincts! Group: Wonder Girls
Debut: 2007
The most popular girl group out today, the Wonder Girls are the brainchild of K-pop Svengali Park Jin-Young, who also discovered heartthrob (and Stephen Colbert nemesis) Rain. The Girls' much-anticipated second album is coming soon, complete with a “sexier” look. Since two of the five are under 18, hopefully it won’t be too soon.

Group: Jewelry
Debut: 2001
Call 'em the Korean Destiny's Child'Jewelry is known for replacing (and re-replacing) members for various reasons. Still, O.G. member Seo In-Young remains the Beyoncé of the bunch. Jewelry is responsible for the “ET Dance” craze that swept the nation earlier this year.

Group: Brown Eyed Girls
Debut: 2006
The BEGs are another four-girl group with a recent hit record (”L.O.V.E.”) and a cringe-inducing rapper (Miryo). The video below is for their new single. But wait, don't all girls in Korea have (naturally) brown eyes? What's next, Black Haired Boys?

Group: Girls Generation
Debut: 2007
Formed by famed talent agency SM Entertainment, this nine-member group was put together somewhat like one of Diddy's Making The Band experiments. Likewise, the group has faced some skepticism from fans, but fuck it, they're still cute.

Debut: 2005
Also created by SM Entertainment, this quartet is actually bigger in Japan than Korea. Unlike some of their peers, they can actually sing. The video below is of their first hit single, which was flagged by the government for having suggestive lyrics. Word?

I think the best girl group now is The grace..They can really “sing” and dance unlike other groups that only dance and make a cute face so everybody will like them..If we look from The grace history, many of other groups that debuted after the grace follow the grace like fashion style, song name,really similar..

i’d like to say that you obviously don’t understand what the pussycats are really about. if you would listen to some of their songs (like I don’t need a man or wait a minute) or watch an interview, you would see that they are about women empowerment and try to affect people with their music. and plus…nicole’s voice could kick the asses of them korean groups put together. they can’t hold a candle to her true raw talent even with all those special affects. so don’t be talking shit about something you don’t know

Oh please. They can sing it but living it is two different things. I’m American and I would rather listen to these girls who are fun that some girls that wouldn’t get anywhere if they didn’t flaunt their bodies off like hookers.
Message is, be independent but only if you look good. Nicole can sing, I’ll give you that much but she’d have the same voice without looking the way she does.
Seriously, if PSD didn’t show off their bodies like that then they wouldn’t sell records. That’s the way the music industry works here. The people on here got it right and I can’t believe you would buy into American girl groups independent drabble.

In terms of talent-wise, it’s definitely 2ne1.
Just like how I react whenever it comes to the best boy band — it’s Big Bang.
It isn’t the era where stars have to only be good-looking, moreover Korea’s plastic surgeons are so professional in transforming and plasticizing ugly ducks to heavenly swans.
So I don’t see it’s a huge problem when you’re born not looking darn fantastic – plastic surgeons will be there to aid you every corner you turn in Korea.
But what if you are born without talent?
Is it so easy to be cultivated?
Why can’t any Tom, Dick or Harry be a celebrity then?
Come on.
That’s what I love about YG!
They pick those with talent, because they know their agency isn’t a modeling company — in fact many agencies are aware of that but perhaps they are blinded by beauty or a born with a single-digit IQ.
Beauty only gets attention, personality captures the heart.

I don’t know why people keep saying that “these or those people can’t sing or dance”.
This probably won’t prove any point, but I would ask you if you could dance even a quarter of these moves or sing a passage. While it’s true that they didn’t write the songs or choreograph themselves, the outstanding part about K-pop is that their songs are really lively and colourful.
Dancing was never necessarily when it comes to music. But they don’t just slap some seemingly useless choreograph there – it’s there to make things even better! C’mon people, stop wasting time slamming things and learn to appreciate for once.
They may not be audiophile-grade singing or whatever, but they *sell*. And if things sell they have to be good. I’d like to see you enter any of the company auditions, debut, and manage to sell, get fame and an idol image.
Otherwise, stop talking like you know what sucks and what doesn’t. Get off the high horse/chair already.
And look, Kpop groups (and maybe to a lesser degree Jpop/Jrock groups) are heavily integrated into society – they’ve got their own share of anti’s, but look, they’re everywhere in variety shows, dramas, and even in the national army! That just proves how great a driving force they are in South Korea today.
Go any other country and see whether bands/groups/artistes are as much a part of the country as it is in South Korea.
