We’ve always said the most entertaining thing about hip-hop is beef between grafted-devil MCs. Whether it was 3rd Bass vs Vanilla Ice, El-P vs. Sole, or even the ménage a quatre of Eminem vs. Cage, Everlast, and Evidence, there’s something so gosh darn cute about white on white lyrical feuds. So you can imagine how amped we got the other day when our Facebook buddy John Brown came out against Internet-It-Boy Asher Roth.
See, we all know John Brown is King of Da Burbz. But JB is heated that Roth—who just dropped his Don Cannon/DJ Drama mixtape last week—is rocking some burb-based iconography too. In a statement he sent to HHNLive.com, John said that “this dude and his…sidekick are so obviously a bunch of Stans that watched the White Rapper Show and then completely bit the whole burbs branding and lifestyle that I represented on the show and continue to represent in hip hop… It’s like his team tried to take the branding from John Brown and the sound of Eminem and create a Burb Frankestein.” So who has the upper hand? First off, it must suck to be the person that posted this blog. You my son, are a fucking moron. Second, John Brown has no “skill.” How the fuck is this kid even being compared to any artist in the game? I’d rather listen to Gucci Mane’s discography on repeat for the rest of my life.

That is without question the most ridiculous statement I have ever heard in regaurds to an MC’s talent. Who gives a fuck who was featured on BET?! That absurd channel does nothing but stream the mindless cliched “Bling Bling” Down South trash that hiphop has deteriorated into over the last decade or so!
I personally think Asher Roth is withhout question an extremely talented MC, regaurdless of race. As someone stated in an earlier post “He seems to be having fun with hiphop” which is exactly what stands out about him. He has a killer flow, lyrical creativity and seems to legitimately enjoy what he’s doing. In a way he reminds me of The Beastie Boys circa License/Pauls Boutiqe in that he’s not taking him self too seriously.
As far as John Brown goes…eh! He’s got a cookie cutter style, generic flow and is trying way too hard to come off as “The White Boy Who’s Down Wit Da Struggle, YO!”. I mean look at the moniker: “John Brown”, a 19th century slavery abolitionist. OK! We get it buddy, your “down”!

First of all if we are going to bring up ripping off this suburban thing we should probably mention the Kottonmouth Kings. They’ve been pulling the suburban act before either of these guys started. Second of all John Brown sounds like trash. I’ll give him his beats are ok, but he’s another generic rapper who might have one hit but won’t go anywhere. Ok first of all. Which one of these two is qualified to be considered from the suburbs. Both represent some type of cross between city and suburb style but neither one of them is as complete suburbs as Ziplok. the new album will be out soon featuring just about anyone on my top friends over there on myspace. I cant see how either one of these dudes gets a consideration based on two things SULLEE and basically the actuality of what is what. SULLEE was the only thing anyone paid attension to on that VH1 show and all the rest of the marketing is on some Tila Tequila ish.
