Yoko Devereaux’s Old Money Coin Necklaces

Aside from the Jesus Piece, we don’t normally spend too much time necklace shopping. But we must admit that these “Old Money” pendants from Brooklyn-based menswear design house Yoko Devereaux might be worth investing in. They start with a vintage coin, hollow it out by hand, leaving only the primary design, which is then attached to a sterling silver chain.
The coins seem pretty fresh to us, but of course the brand’s Creative Director Andy Salzer has an artsy fartsy justification: “It is about taking something that is so relevant in our society and then destroying it.” Buy one now for $88 or read more about each coin after the jump.
NAME: “Family Origins Necklace”
COIN: England’s halfpenny
MEANING: The ship pictured is The Golden Hind, a famous 16th century vessel charted by a well known British explorer/mercenary named Sir Francis Drake. In 1577, Queen Elizabeth hired Drake to sail up and down the coast of South America, where he robbed Spanish colonies and ships blind for the next two years.
-
NAME: “Pomona Necklace”
COIN: Czechoslovakia’s 1 Koruna
MEANING: The woman pictured is Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit trees, gardens and orchards. As the myth goes, one day this beautiful wood nymph was hiding from men in her private orchard when Vertumnus, the God of seasons, dressed up like an old woman and conned himself inside, where he tricks Pomona into marrying him.
-
NAME: “Raghorn Necklace”
COIN: Canada’s quarter
MEANING: Contrary to popular belief that it is a moose, the animal pictured is actually the caribou, also known as the reindeer. Created by designer Emanuel Hahn in 1937, the caribou is one of the country’s most historically important animals going back to the traditional Inuit people.
