Two Indie Movies To See Instead Of Iron Man

Clearly, everyone is gonna be seeing the amazing Iron Man adaptation this weekend (if you already did, check out our new reenactment “Iron Man In Under Three Minutes“). But if superhero fare isn’t your bag (loser), or you’re trying to impress a girl with your “intellect,” there are a pair of interesting independent flicks also hitting theaters today.
First up is Son Of Rambow, a coming-of-age comedy about two British kids who get inspired by watching Rambo: First Blood and decide to shoot their own war action movie. Garth Jennings, the music video director who also did The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy in 2005, is behind it. The flick debuted at Sundance last year, and has gotten overwhelmingly solid reviews. Expect some laughs and Billy Elliott-esque warm fuzzy feelings. Maybe one tear. Of joy.
Also getting limited release this week is Mister Lonely, the new movie from Gummo director and Kids writer Harmony Korine. It follows a lonely Michael Jackson impersonator (played by Y Tu Mama Tambien’s Diego Luna) in Paris who meets up with a fake Marylin Monroe who brings him to her mini-colony of celebrity impresonaters. The reviews have been much more mixed (most calling it rather dull), but Korine’s movies always have some great scenes, even if they don’t add up to much. After the jump, watch both trailers.
