Jimmy Fallon Is The New Conan O’Brien

In a bizarre, hail mary career resurrection, it seems as if former Saturday Night Live cast member Jimmy Fallon will be taking over Late Night when Conan O’Brien moves into Jay Leno’s shoes in 2009. While we’re all for the consistently hilarious Conan sliding into the big boy time slot, Jimmy Fallon seems problematic. Well, at least they didn’t promote Carson Daily.
You’ve probably forgotten who Fallon is by now, since he failed to capitalize on his huge post-SNL buzz with a series of horrible movies (Taxi with Queen Latifah) and un-funny comedy songs (“Idiot Boyfriend”). On SNL, he was famous for his musical parodies and “Weekend Update,” leading him to host the 2001 and 2005 MTV Video Music Awards. But since his Red Sox-themed rom-com Fever Pitch bombed in 2005, he’s had a hard time getting work. As far as we’re concerned, he was just the flash-in-the-pan, Dane Cook of the boyband generation. But maybe we’re missing something the NBC execs are seeing. For a taste of how his hosting might go, watch his 2001 VMA opening after the jump.
