Tip of the Week: Know Your Suit

Illustrations by Mike Davis

It’s probably the most expensive thing in your closet, so rocking your suit correctly is a must. Learn how all the details effect your look with our six essential suit tips, after the jump.

1. KEEP IT TOGETHER

Bring a shirt, tie, belt, and shoes to the store when trying on a suit. The complete look is vital.

2. OFF THE CUFF
There should be a 1/4-inch of shirt cuff showing beneath your jacket sleeves (pictured above).

3. DON’T SKIP THE TAILOR
Even the best suits need altering. Try your suit on at the tailor, so problems can be dealt with on the spot.

4. SOCKS TO BE YOU

The socks should match the suit before the shoes, not vice-versa.

5. ON THE BUTTONS
Leave the top and bottom buttons undone on a three-buttoned suit, and the bottom undone on a two-buttoned suit.

6. ONE IS NOT FOR ALL

A one-button suit is high on style but not for every person. Make it your second (or third) suit.

  1. I would submit that buttoning the top 2 buttons on a three button suit is acceptable.
