Woody Allen Takes On American Apparel

Woody Allen Ad / Photo: Boris Fishman
Pencil-necked cradle-robber/once genius filmmaker Woody Allen is tight over this American Apparel ad from 2007, and is suing the brightly-colored hipster shopping haven for over $10 million dollars. According to the Dow Jones, Allen claims the billboards featuring him dressed as a rabbi (taken from a scene in Annie Hall) were used without his permission. Allen’s legal team also said that the billboards not only were displayed in prime spots in NYC and L.A but also on AA’s website and partner sites. We’re thinking American Apparel should’ve just went with Matisyahu—we hear he comes much cheaper. Remember the non-Hasidic Woody after the jump with one of our favorite scenes from Annie Hall.
Something tells me the whole thing was planned. Why would AA assume they can use an unauthorized pic of Woody? I suspect they knew the cost to woody would be around $10mm for the campaign, which AA can easily afford. So they draw up a contract that says “ok here’s how it’ll go down. We use your pic. You get mad and sue us. We both get loads of press. T hen we pay you the 10 mill. Deal?”
And Woody responds: Well I mean i think it sounds like - i mean it seems to me - i mean I should probably consult with i mean.. well YES. Ok I’ll do it but only because you twisted my arm and my Rabbi said i should be open to new opportunities.”
