Michael Anderson Incites ‘Media Violence’

Making it in the art world ain’t easy. Only a select handful are able to parlay their creative endeavors into actual dollars and make a career out of their “art.” Michael Anderson is one of them. His signature collage work has raised more than a few eyebrows and even landed him at the premier Marlborough Gallery who counts Fernando Botero and Francis Bacon (R.I.P) among a roster of other highly successful artisans. Last night was Anderson’s first solo show, “Media Violence,” at the art house’s new Chelsea location. Large scale collages created from torn down wheatpasted street posters the artist has collected from all over the world—Berlin, Mexico City, Naples, Rome and New York—covered the walls, forcing curious onlookers to stare at the highly detailed works that are so packed with imagery, they’re like those lyrical Easter eggs Hovie drops in his songs. Images of CNN logos mishmashed with the Virgin Mary, Stormtroopers, and mosques dominated the walls as well as other odd juxtapositions: Kung Fu, NYC subway posters, historical figures, etc. There’s almost too much going on to even bother describing, so go ahead, check the website, click some of the thumbs below, and if you’re in town, walk over to Chelsea and see it for yourself.
